Museu dos Baleeiros
The museum of whalers is located in the old warehouses of whaling boats, these buildings date back to the 18th century and are open to tourists from all around the world. And although the last whale was hunted in the Azores in 1987, hunting techniques have not evolved since the Moby Dick era. The unfortunate recognition of a century of whaling culture reaffirms the desire to preserve the Memory of this modus vivendi that deeply marked the habitants of the archipelago.

Pico Azores
Men offshore in a small yacht. Views of the island of Pico from the sea. White buildings. Men push their boat onto the shore. Windmill on a hillside. Man looking through binoculars, out to sea. Waves breaking over rocks along the shore. Men set off on whaling expedition from village. They say goodbye to their wives in the house doorways and carry their luggage through the cobbled streets followed by eager children. Busy waterfront on Pico. Boats are pushed into the water. Supplies on the docks ready for loading. Women standing under sun umbrellas. Boats at sea. Some small boats are towed by larger vessels. Boats fully laden with people and supplies, including live chickens. Boats arrive at Faial Island. Men in a bar drinking and smoking. Men tend to their whaling equipment. Harpoon is sharpened. Harpoon rope is wound into a bucket. Lookouts using binoculars to spot whales. Man sets off a flare. Men run to their boats. Motor boats tows the row boats to position. Whales is spotted in the distance. Masts are raised in the sail boats. Harpoon is thrown by hand and spears a whale. The whale drags the boat as it flees. Men row. Another harpoon is thrown and the attached rope unwinds as the whale tries to escape. The rope is pulled in and the sperm whale is beside the boat, where it is repeatedly harpooned. A man tires as he rows and mops his brow. They still wrestle with a partially subdued whale. The man in the bow of the boat throws another harpoon. The now dead whale is speared with a locator flag and left floating as it bobs in the water.
