Places to see in ( Krefeld - Germany )
Places to see in ( Krefeld - Germany )
On the left bank of the Rhine, not far from Düsseldorf, Krefeld is a conurbation of towns incorporated into a city at the start of the 20th century. At that time Krefeld was a booming textiles town with a forte for silk and velvet weaving. Even now, Krefeld is called the “Samt- und Seidenstadt,” velvet and silk city, and there are still a few places recording this heritage.
One is the German Textiles Museum, which draws on one of the world’s richest collections of fabrics. The affluence generated by textile manufacturing is also unmistakeable in some of the properties in the city: The most remarkable are Haus Lange and Haus Esters, designed by Bauhaus member Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and now a department of the city’s art museum.
In the eastern suburb of Linn is the oldest castle on the Lower Rhine. Burg Linn was raised by the local landowner Otto von Linn in the 1100s and by the 1400s was one of the largest moated castles in the region. In the 18th-century hunting lodge neighbouring the castle there’s a museum for the Lower Rhine region. The lodge was for the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, Clemens August of Bavaria.
The main building for the Kunstmuseen Krefeld is in an Eclectic-style palace inaugurated in 1899. The museum’s reserve is enormous, consisting of 14,000 works from the fields of painting, sculpture, graphical art, applied art, photography and new media . The strong point though is 20th-century art, beginning with sculpture by Rodin, one of Monet’s studies of the Houses of the Parliament and paintings by Expressionists like Emil Nolde, Heinrich Campendonk, Kandinsky and Kirchner.
Haus Lange and Haus Esters come under the “Kunstmuseen Krefeld” umbrella and are both museum pieces in their own right. The German Textile Museum has an internationally recognised fund of textiles, clothing and woven fabrics from all time periods and parts of the world.
If you need a breather or somewhere for a morning jog, Uerdingen’s city park is somewhere to keep on the radar. There’s even more horticulture at Krefeld’s botanical garden in the Oppum district. On Luisenstraße 15 is a museum with a privileged insight into Krefeld’s silk and velvet industries. This house contained a workshop where for more than 100 years liturgical vestments were woven from Chinese and Italian silk yarns.
Krefeld’s most visited attraction is its zoo, which opened in 1938 and today welcomes more than half a million people a year. The origins of Krefeld’s city forest go back a century to the silk manufacturer Wilhelm Deuß who donated land to the city and set up a foundation for a much-needed recreation space for Krefeld’s workers.
If you need an idea for an evening out, Krefeld’s Kulturfabrik is a performing arts venue in a converted factory. Hülser Berg, the tallest natural hill is also here and has a 30-metre lookout tower, the Johannesturm at its crest. In Uerdingen by the Rhine there’s a brandy distillery anchored in Napoleon’s occupation of the left bank of the Rhine at the start of the 19th century.
At Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 42, Villa Merländer is the home of the Krefeld silk merchant Richard Merländer, who was born in Mülheim just across the Rhine in 1874. He was both homosexual and Jewish and so was persecuted by the Nazis, being forced to sell his business and property for less than they were worth in the 1930s. In North Rhine-Westphalia the conurbation is compact enough that within half an hour you could be in any number of other exciting places.

ELMGREEN & DRAGSET
DIE ZUGEZOGENEN
MUSEUM HAUS LANGE
19. FEBRUAR – 27. AUGUST 2017

MUSEUM HAUS LANGE
19 FEBRUARY – 27 AUGUST 2017
For their solo exhibition Die Zugezogenen [The Newcomers], Elmgreen & Dragset treat Haus Lange as it was originally intended: a family home. The artist duo stages the moment that a fictional German family moves in. Having previously relocated to Britain, the family has now decided to move back to Germany following Brexit.
Elmgreen & Dragset combine their own sculptural work with ready-made furniture and artefacts in order to create a domestic setting. Some items have already been unpacked and installed, while others remain semi-wrapped or in boxes. Presenting the family’s move as a symbol of a changing Europe, the exhibition reflects upon the visions of Modernist architecture in light of today’s reality, and considers how many of these ideals now seem distant from our current, global, geopolitical situation.
With their first solo show in the Rhineland, Elmgreen & Dragset continue — in their own inimical way — the tradition of site-related works that already established itself in Haus Lange in the early 1960s. Michael Elmgreen (*1961 in Copenhagen, Denmark) and Ingar Dragset (*1969 in Trondheim, Norway) have worked as an artist duo since the mid-1990s. In their sculptures, installations and performances they re-interpret the familiar and quotidian with socio-critical humor and subversive wit. From their sensational installation of a Prada boutique in the Texas desert to their contributions to the Danish and Nordic Pavilions at the Venice Biennale 2009, to their conception for an ostensible art fair in Beijing in 2015, Elmgreen & Dragset constantly devise new possibilities in art presentation and reception and for the use of public spaces. In Fall 2017 they will curate the Istanbul Biennale.

karin kneffel gagosian gallery new york 2012
opening karin kneffel gagosian new york 12. sept. 2012
Art is a lie in a certain sense. And that is why it can tell the truth to the reality of everyday life without competing with it. The reality of painting is one reality, the reality of everyday life is another.
—Karin Kneffel
Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Karin Kneffel. This is her first exhibition with the gallery.
Kneffel addresses the threshold between interior and exterior, and real and fictive space through a sophisticated play on reflectivity, opacity and transparency. Seaming together heterogeneous spaces and times in a flawlessly executed, seductively realist manner, she paints pictures that are perfectly constructed impossibilities. Although many of her sources actually exist, her image is first and foremost a surface, highlighting painting’s simultaneous ability to uphold and destroy illusions.
In these mannered pictorial spaces, Kneffel’s superb painting technique moves between materialization and dematerialization. On a quadruple—grounded canvas, she applies up to four layers of oil paint with the finest brush. Like veils, each covers the entire surface. Should she decide to change any element, it has consequences for the entire organization of the image. Her acute handling of rich color, texture, form, and space is resolutely apparent, equal to the visual games and enigmas that pervade Rococo and Mannerist painting, yet firmly rooted, formally and conceptually, within the vernacular information of her own time.
In 2009, Kneffel presented an exhibition at the Kunstmuseen Krefeld in Germany, which is housed in a pair of significant modernist villas, Haus Lange and Haus Esters, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Inspired by the architecture and its histories, Kneffel began an on-going series of paintings that conflate the various phases of the buildings into coherent yet ‘slippery’ scenes. In several paintings, the original owner’s somewhat incongruous, interior furnishings form the background depiction, which is then overlaid with spectral images of lamps and chairs designed by Lilly Reich and Mies that are actually more consistent with the style and ethos of the building. Added to these disjunctive interiors, a third layer of raindrops and rivulets on the plate-glass windows mirrors the external landscape, setting up confounding spatial relations. Thus Kneffel maps the distinction between historical actuality and historical idealism as a glimmering palimpsest of memory. It would seem that not only has she found potent subject matter in the open and dynamic architectural structures of Mies, but also a conceptual equivalent that allows her to work though her own concerns with painting.
In another body of work, prompted by a trip to New York last year, Kneffel meditates on the historic Seagram Building in New York. Again, she renders uncanny the renowned interior, designed by Mies and Philip Johnson. What appears to be a factual reproduction of an actual location is, in fact, a smooth amalgamation of different temporalities and incidents. In some, random drops of water on the surface contain reflections and visual echoes of disparate details that ultimately develop lives of their own, recalling the use of bubbles and droplets as microcosms in seventeenth century nature morte painting. In others, words and phrases—some quote Mies himself, others would appear to be Kneffel’s own fleeting thoughts—graffitied with a finger in the condensation on the outside of a window become the means through which the eye is permitted partial access to the scene within. A very recent work is a kind of intimate self-portrait, whereby the green vividness of a garden is visible through a cross traced in condensation on a window. We can just picture the moment at which the artist in her studio, perhaps bored, or frustrated, turns toward the window—frosted over on a winter’s day from the heat within—and makes a spontaneous mark (of erasure or negation) that, paradoxically, opens the way to a fresh reality.
Karin Kneffel was born in Marl, Germany in 1957 and studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf between 1981 and 1987. She lives and works in Düsseldorf and is a professor of painting at the Munich Academy of Arts. Kneffel’s recent exhibitions include Kunsthalle Tübingen (2010), and Kunstmuseum Krefeld Museum Haus Esters (2009–10).

The house for Karl and Martha Lemke is an illustration of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's sentence architecture begins if two bricks are carefully assembled -- both literally and in terms of its volumetric composition. It is a small, simple brickwork structure finished in 1933 and situated on a double piece of land on the lake Obersee in Berlin--Hohenschönhausen with the landscape designed by the office of Karl Foerster and executed by Herta Hammerbach and Hermann Mattern. The L-shaped configuration opens toward the garden and the lake; the facades correspond to this with great openings to the terrace and smaller windows to the street. Nevertheless the entrance door is completely glazed and adds to the relative transparency of the solid building. After entering, there is another glass door to the left leading to the study and the bedroom, whereas a wooden door takes the view from the living room with adjacent kitchen and service area. The main effect is experienced while being in the studio or living room; the outside is in between, and one looks out and in again: a reflexivity of the view is obtained that is increased by the mirrored exterior.
As it is a gallery today it is open on a regular basis. For more information please call +49 30 9700 0618 or visit miesvanderrohehaus.de (web site in German only).

The artist Karin Kneffel is one of the important painters in Germany. Her photo-realistic-looking images combine realism and surrealism. In her paintings she shows everydayness, obtained through reflection and overlapping a second level. Like fleeting moments to remind their dreamlike scenes. For her exhibition at the Museum Haus Esters, the artist will specifically develop a series of paintings, which were allowed to irritating ways with the existing facilities of the Villa Ester. We accompany her in the studio doing the last painting for the exhibition.
