Patee House Museum, St Joseph, Missouri (full)
In 1856 John Patee began construction of the Patee House, a huge hotel at the foot of a bluff on Penn Street at 12th in St. Joseph, Missouri.
The Patee House was an imposing structure of red brick, four stories tall and built in the shape of a U.
A two-story center section was enclosed on three sides. The block-size structure featured several balconies, front steps running the length of the building and an ornate cupola.
The dining room was well equipped with steam tables and the floors were covered throughout with thick, red carpeting.
The Patee House was completed in 1858 and was very profitable until the outbreak of the Civil War.
Its conversion into a shirt factory in 1885 led to massive interior alterations.
The building was vacated in 1957 and stood empty for five years.
During that time, the interior was continuously vandalized.
In 1963 the Pony Express Historical Association was formed, and through their efforts the building was saved from demolition.
In 1975 the Patee House was partially restored.
The cupola was replaced but balconies and the steps which ran the length of the west side of the hotel have not yet been reconstructed.
The interior has been largely altered through the years but retains the second-floor ballroom, several original hotel rooms and a staircase. These will be restored as funds permit.
Several areas have been renovated for use as museum space.
One such area, theTransportation Hall, contains antique cars, wagons, buggies, fire trucks, sleighs, and the 90-foot Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad steam locomotive and mail car.
The museum has been open free to the public since its inception. The Patee House in St. Joseph, Missouri was the headquarters for Russell, .Majors, and Waddell, the owjiers of the Pony Express.
The cannon which inaugurated the opening of the Express was fired in froit of this building on April 3, 1860. Arthur Chapman describes the Patee House as follows in The Pony Express;
In keeping with its dignity as the chief way-point between East and West, St. Joseph had provided itself with a hotel which was one of the marvels of the time.
John Patee, in 1856, began the construction of what was to be the finest hotel in the West.
The Patee House cost $200,000, but, unfortunately for its promoter, its location was such that the project could not be made to pay.
Stage coaches ran special excursions when the hotel was opened. Guests came from Liberty, and Weston and all the way from Hannibal.
The long hitching rack in front of the hotel was lined with the rigs of the young bloods from St. Joseph and vicinity.
But the railroad terminal, instead of being located on Penn Street, as Patee had been assured, was built several blocks away, at Eighth and Olive streets, and St. Joseph's marvel among hotels was a financial failure from the start.
Many distinguished guests of stage-coach days put up at the Patee House, notwithstanding.
For the east-bound it afforded the first glorious plunge into the luxuries which the States possessed and the frontier- lacked.
For those bound west, it afforded afarewell revelry in such luxuries.
William H. Russell and Alexander Majors were familiar figures about the Patee House when they were establishing their stage line and later the Pony Express.
Richard F. Burton, keen to penetrate the mysteries of Mormondom; Horace Greeley and the correspondent Albert D. Richardson, intent on writing up the Colorado gold camps; adventurers headed for the distant excitements of Washoe; sportsmen who wanted to shoot buffaloes and perhaps have a not-too-dangerous brush with Indians such figures gave the corridors of the Patee House something more than local swank.

The Historic Missouri Mines!
Nestled deep within the eastern Ozarks in an areaknown as the Old Lead Belt; is a major part of the great Southeast Missouri lead district, the premier lead mining district of the world. The mining industry in this area played an important role in Missouri's economic and social fabric for more than 280 years.
Pierre Charles Leseurled the first European mineralogical expedition in the Mississippi Valley in early 1700. Two decades later, word came of a shiny gray mineral, that was everywhere, often laying on the surface of the ground. These early explorers discovered that blanketlike lodes of galena, many feet thick, lay just below the surface. This plentiful mineral is the primary lead ore still mined today in Missouri. The ore deposits have made Missouri the nations major source of lead for more than 90 years.
In 1964, St Joseph Lead Co. purchased nearly 950 acres at Bonne Terre, Missouri. The company soon rose to dominance over its competitors because of its innovations in ore-smelting,underground engineering technology and the development and use of mechanical equipment. In 1923 the company purchased the Federal Mill No. 3 lead-concentrating complex and improved the mill to become the largest lead mill in the world. It remained in operation until 1972.
In 1975, the company donated the Federal mine-mill complex, along with adjoining lands. to Missouri for use as a State Park.

May 2013 - Mattie Blaylock Earp @ the Pinal Historic Cemetery
This is where Mattie Blaylock Earp, Wyatt Earps second wife, girlfriend, ride or house pet is planted...out in the desert. Wyatts first wife died shortly after they were married, but I dont remember why. His third wife was the actress, Josephine (sources say a common law marriage) and they lived together for 46 years. When Wyatt died January 13, 1929, Josephine had him cremated and placed in the Jewish section of the family plot in Colma California. Josephine Sarah Marcus Earp died on December 20, 1944, at 4004 W. 17th Street in the West Adams district of Los Angeles, California. She was 83 or 84 years old. Her body was cremated and buried next to Wyatt's remains in the Marcus family plot in the Jewish Hills of Eternity Memorial Park in Colma, California.
I have been told since I made this video that the marker for Mattie is NOT where her body or what is left of it is at. The Historical Society or the State of Arizona just put the marker here I guess in fear of someone digging her up...what for I have no idea, but you will have to have a back-hoe. You are not going to dig anything more than a few inches without it. I was also told that the grave I have recorded here with all the money on it (at the 6:28 mark) is where Mattie really is. Now I dont know if this it true or not so I am just repeating what was told to me. This grave is about 50-60 yards past the present marker for Mattie as you walk straight in.
Getting to the Pinal Historic Cemetery is not a big challenge, but you do have to pay attention or you will end up out in the middle of no-wheres-ville. From the town of Superior, Arizona...maybe 1/2 mile West on highway 60 you will come up on road NF-229 on the North side of highway 60. Turn North and follow this road about 7/10's of a mile. There will be a big white building with blue trim on your right when you get to about the 1/2 mile spot. Just a little ways farther, you will come up on a fork in the road and you want to take the left fork which is East Happy Camp Road. From this point you will go about 1.3 miles. You will go up a semi-steep hill and when you get to the top you want to make a left turn on to what looks like a jeep-trail road. As soon as you get off of East Happy Camp Road and you are on the jeep type road, make a 45* right onto another jeep-type trail road. If you will look out to the distance at this point you will see some big high-line wire towers. The cemetery is just on the other side of these wire towers...something like 8/10's of a mile in. Also there is a good sized rock mountain off in the distance straight out. When you turn off East Happy Camp Road, sorta head towards the direction of this rock mountain. If you are in a car/truck, I strongly advise you to stay on the trail road because there is cactus everywhere. Getting off the trail road might have you walking out from flats. There is plenty of room to turn around when you get to the entrance of the cemetery. Please remember that this is a cemetery and that there are many people buried here...some in marked graves and some not. Leave no trace of you ever being here except maybe a foot print in the dirt.
I have friends that live close by and they have all told me the the marker that was put up by the State is NOT Mattie's actual grave. It is just where they put the marker up. Mattie's actual grave is the pic where all the coins are on. I did not know this at the time I was there, but was told later after I had returned back home. Why they did this...who knows, unless they are in fear that someone was going to come out there and dig her up...and that aint gonna happen unless that someone has a backhoe.
Any questions...just ask and I will try to help you out.
