Hindeloopen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɪndəˌloːpə(n)]; West Frisian: Hylpen; Hindeloopen Frisian: Hielpen [ˈhiːəlpən]) is an old city on the North of the Netherlands on the IJsselmeer. It lies within the municipality of Súdwest Fryslân. It is famous because of the Hindeloopen art and hindeloopen costume.
Hindeloopen is one of the eleven cities of Friesland.
History
Hindeloopen received city rights in 1225 and in 1368 it became a member of the Hanseatic League. Since the 12th and 13th century, shippers of Hindeloopen undertook journeys to the North and Baltic Sea Coasts. The strong overseas connections with foreign countries and infrequent contact with the hinterland were probably the reasons for the developing of the Hindeloopen language; a mixture of West Frisian, English, Danish, and Norwegian.[1]
The shipping trade brought the population of Hindeloopen a great prosperity. The 17th and 18th century were especially golden times. At that time, the people of Hindeloopen spent a lot of money in Amsterdam on precious fabrics and objects, which were supplied through the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The rich town developed in those days her own costume and a completely individual style with colorful painted walls and furniture.
In the small streets some sea captains houses remind of this time of glory. You can see an anchor hanging on the façades of these houses, in those years a sign, that the captain could still accept freight. In summertime when the captain was at sea, the captain's wife lived with the children in the so-called “Likhus”. A little house behind the captain's house at the waterline.
Sights
In the old center you can get a feel for Hindeloopen's unique character by wandering through the narrow streets and looking for the lovely views, the typical wooden bridges and characteristic façades. In the Museum Hindeloopen you can become acquainted with the rich maritime history and living culture of Hindeloopen, which manifests itself in the rich Hindeloopen art and in the fine old costumes.

Bij de kerk en het museum verrijst dit jaar een koperen boom, geflankeerd door een tweedelig gewei van duurzaam hout om op te zitten en te klimmen. Vogels in de bomen spuwen water. Om de boom komt een waterbassin en het kunstwerk wordt aangelicht door lampen in de grond. Hoe ver zouden ze zijn met dit kunstwerk vroegen Anske Smit en ik ons af. Een gesprek met Johan Stallman en de volgende beelden geven duidelijkheid.

Verbouwing moet Museum Hindeloopen weer bij de tijd brengen
Museum Hindeloopen in Hindeloopen heeft plannen voor een ingrijpende verbouwing en vernieuwing. Bestuur en directie vinden de collectie niet meer van deze tijd. Het museum moet aantrekkelijker worden en drie keer zoveel bezoekers trekken dan nu, van 8000 naar 22000.
Het museumbestuur hoopt de ruim twee miljoen euro die voor de verbouwing nodig is, de komende maanden binnen te halen. Als alles volgens plan gaat, moet de hele verbouwing in 2018 klaar zijn.

STORYLINE
A day after organisers ruled that ice was too dangerous for the legendary 125-mile (200-kilometre) Elfstedentocht race to go ahead, hundreds of skaters took to the route in The Netherlands on Thursday.
The event usually attracts 16,000 skaters, but the organising committee - the Frisian Eleven Cities Association - only allows it to go ahead when ice across the entire route is six inches (15 centimetres) thick.
Often, ice is thick enough on one part of the track but not others - this week, it was too thin almost everywhere.
In the city of Hindeloopen, local skating official Gauke Bootsma said organisers had been very sceptical from the beginning.
There are some places with only five to six centimetres of ice. You can't let 16,000 people skate in such conditions, he said.
The race was last staged in 1997 and its winner, farmer Henk Angenent became an overnight celebrity.
Skating in winter is a way of life for the Dutch, who learn as young children by pushing chairs around frozen ponds to help them keep their balance.
That deeply ingrained love of skating is part of the reason for the Elfstedentocht's popularity.
Another is its rarity - it has only been staged 15 times since the inaugural race in 1909.
Speculation about a possible Elfstedentocht reached fever pitch this week after an Arctic snap froze canals, rivers and lakes across the country.
Hotels throughout the northern province of Friesland sold out and the country's military was set to be deployed to control crowds expected to reach up to two (m) million.
At a nationally televised press conference on Wednesday the association's chairman Wiebe Wieling disappointed the nation when he said the race would not go ahead.
It got a royal seal of approval in 1986, when heir to the Dutch throne Crown Prince Willem-Alexander completed the grueling race, registering under the name W.A. van Buren to shield his true identity.
Jisk Schuurmans, a Frisian farmer visiting from his home in Canada, struggled to put into words the race's mythical appeal to the Dutch national psyche.
It's everything, he said.

SkaterSiebe de Boer, 69, pulled up at a bridge 20 kilometres (12 miles) into his 30-kilometre (18-mile) skate and said he was disappointed, but also showcased a typically Frisian level head.

Hoewel het geen haven had maar slechts een rede in de Zuiderzee, was Hindeloopen lange tijd een belangrijke hanzestad en vissersplaats. De visserschepen droegen de lettercode HI.De grote bloeiperiode van het stadje lag tussen 1650 en 1790, toen Hindeloopen een grote vloot bezat van ruim tachtig schepen. Aan de kapitale 17e en 18e eeuwse kapiteinshuizen is nog te zien hoe rijk de Hindeloopers waren. Hindeloopen vormde een zelfstandige gemeente, tot het in 1984 samen met Workum, Stavoren en een groot deel van Hemelumer Oldeferd opging in de nieuwe gemeente Nijefurd.

Actiepicknick voor badpaviljoen in Hindeloopen
Op zondag aan het begin van de middag begint een picknick bij het badpaviljoen van Hindeloopen. Daarmee wordt actiegevoerd voor het herstel van het oude vervallen gebouw. In 2009 is het paviljoen door de eigenaar, de directeur van camping Schuilenburg in Hindeloopen, gesloten.
Het badpaviljoen is gebouwd in 1913, het is van beton en hout en destijds werd het gebouw het Kurhaus aan de Zuiderzee genoemd. Een hoop mensen willen graag dat het badpaviljoen in oude glorie wordt hersteld. Er is een aantal maal getracht restauratieplannen door te voeren, maar het opknappen kost miljoenen.
Het is de vraag wie dat moet gaan betalen. Volgens de actievoerders is het vijf voor twaalf. Zij vinden dat overheden en de eigenaar van het badpaviljoen serieus met elkaar om tafel moeten.

De Chinese kunstenaar Shen Yuan kwam speciaal uit Parijs naar Hindeloopen voor de onthulling van haar ontwerp voor de Hylper fontein. Het kunstwerk is geïnspireerd op het wapen van de stad, waarin een hert en een hinde eten van de mythische levensboom, symbool van wijsheid en levensenergie zijn afgebeeld.
Bij de kerk en het museum verrijst in 2018 een koperen boom, geflankeerd door een tweedelig gewei van duurzaam hout om op te zitten en te klimmen. Vogels in de bomen spuwen water. Om de boom komt een waterbassin en het kunstwerk wordt aangelicht door lampen in de grond. Tijdens de onthulling toonden de Hylpers zich enthousiast. Het waterkunstwerk past goed in de omgeving waar het gepland staat: een groenstrook met bomen, vlakbij de kerk en het museum. Shen Yuan heeft de wensen van de fonteincommissie waar kunnen maken.

Het stadje Hindeloopen aan het IJsselmeer is één van de Friese elf steden. Het is een voormalige Hanzestad. Hoewel het qua oppervlakte beperkt is, valt er wel veel moois te zien. Een stadswandeling in deze plaats kan ik u van harte aanbevelen.
