Empúries, Greek and Roman Ruins in Spain
In Ancient times there was a city called Phocaea, in the geographical area that today is Turkey. 2600 years ago greek colonists from Phocaea traveled west and reached this coast of north-east Spain to found a new settlement. It became Emporion, a thriving center for commerce and merchants. Later, Emporion was occupied by the romans and to the original greek settlement, just few meters from the beach, a new Roman portion of the city was added, slightly more inland. The city prospered for centuries, but then fell in decline in the early medieval age, when its very exposed position made it too vulnerable to marauders. Meanwhile other Roman cities in the area were gaining more power, like Barcino (Barcelona) and Tarraco (Tarragona). Here is how Empúries looks today, in ruins. The statue is a copy of the original (kept inside the museum) but it's placed in the location where the original standed. It probably depicts Asclepius, greek god of healing and medicine.

Ancient Greek and Roman Ruins - Empúries, Spain
Ancient Greek and Roman Ruins at Empúries, Spain, a little video tour.
While in Pals camping, we visited Empúries and the Greek and Roman ruins. This city started back in 250BC with a Greek settlement and later came the Romans along. Empuries was a good trading location and the Romans also wanted to set-up a city there, so the Greeks at Empuries agreed to work with the Romans and they lived in harmony. The Greeks had the location closest to the bay and Mediterranean Sea and the Romans built up higher, above the Greek settlement. There are a massive amount of ancient ruins at Empuries and it is very interesting. You can see the Forum and even the remains of a colosseum! The city walls were also most impressive, but for me, the titles and geometric patters on the nicely mosaic tiled floors in the Roman large house was amazing.

Empuries (Ampurias)
Empuries (Ampurias)
Empúries, formerly known by its Spanish name Ampurias, was a town on the Mediterranean coast of the Catalan comarca of Alt Empordà in Catalonia, Spain. It was founded in 575 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea with the name of Ἐμπόριον (Emporion, meaning trading place, cf. emporion). It was later occupied by the Romans (Latin: Emporiæ), but in the Early Middle Ages, when its exposed coastal position left it open to marauders, the town was abandoned.
The ruins are midway between the Costa Brava town of L'Escala and the tiny village of Sant Martí. There are good car parking facilities and the site may be reached by a traffic-free coastal walk from L'Escala.

The Roman ruins of Tarraco have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Part of the bases of large Cyclopean walls near the Cuartel de Pilatos are thought to pre-date the Romans. The second century Tarragona Amphitheatre near the seashore was extensively used as a quarry after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and but few vestiges of it now remain. A circus c. 450 metres (1,480 ft) long, was built over in the area now called Plaça de la Font, though portions of it are still to be traced.
Les Ferreres Aqueduct, which spans a valley about 4 kilometres (2 miles) north of the city. It is 217 m (712 ft) in length, and the loftiest arches, of which there are two tiers, are 26 m (85 ft) high. There is a monument about 6 km (4 mi) along the coast road east of the city, commonly called the Tower of the Scipios
