UPPER TOWN Minsk (Vierchni Horad) and its CAT Museum (Budget Travel Belarus) {Minsk, BELARUS}
Budget Travel Belarus #3
The Upper Town (Vierchni Horad) is in the heart of the capital, Minsk Belarus.
Naturally there are several museums in the Upper Town Minsk, also known as Old Town Minsk and Old City Minsk. Three are adjacent to each other, including the Carriage Museum in the center, where the city's roots and stories dating back to the medieval times can be found.
Upper Town is also a financial district so a visit at the newly minted Museum of Money is in order. Plus, on this warm day, a rest is required to indulge in the national drink of kvas.
Oh, and cats. Lots and lots of cats at the Cat Museum. Because....cats!
Matt meanders around to discover how Minsk Belarus is safe, clean and tourist-friendly.

World of Tanks - Official Soundtrack: Minsk
1970s Minsk. An old city that looks young, because it was completely destroyed and then rebuilt from the ashes of the most terrible war in history. Its mood is contradictory. It’s made of the music of that time, hope for a better future, and anxiety brought by the Cold War.

119. The monument to the Kazakhstan Soldiers
Many Kazakh men died in battles for the peaceful future of the country.
Their deeds will stay forever in the poems and songs. The monument is erected in honor of the Kazakhstan soldiers who died in Afghanistan and in other battle fields in the 28 Panfilov Guardians Park.
The natural relief of the park is used for this composition. There are two staircases from the two sides of the monument.
There are three soldiers with strict facial expression. They represent the image of strong fighters.
Their hard eyes, prominent cheekbones, compressed lips and clenched fists say about their firm characters.
The sculptor K.Satybaldin and architect V.Sidorov expresses in those sculptures the heroism, martial virtue and deep sorrow of the warriors.
The monument was installed in 2003 for the 14th anniversary of withdrawal of Soviet troops from the territory of Afghanistan.
There are names and surnames of 69 Almaty citizens who died in this war written on the monument. More than 22 thousand Kazakhstan men took part in the war at the territory of that country.

Main Market Square in Krakow, Poland
Main Market Square in Krakow, Poland
The main square of the Old Town of Kraków, Lesser Poland, is the principal urban space located at the center of the city. It dates back to the 13th century, and at 9.4 acres is one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe. The Project for Public Spaces lists the square as the best public space in Europe due to its lively street life, and it was a major factor in the inclusion of Kraków as one of the top off-the-beaten-path destinations in the world in 2016.
The main square is a square space surrounded by historic townhouses (kamienice) and churches. The center of the square is dominated by the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), rebuilt in 1555 in the Renaissance style, topped by a beautiful attic or Polish parapet decorated with carved masks. On one side of the cloth hall is the Town Hall Tower (Wieża ratuszowa), on the other the 10th century Church of Saint Adalbert and 18 98 Adam Mickiewicz Monument. Rising above the square are the Gothic towers of Saint Mary's Basilica. Kraków Main Square does not have a town hall, because it has not survived to the present day.
The main function of the Market Square was commerce. After the city was destroyed by the Mongol invasion in 12 41, the Main Square was rebuilt in 12 57 and its commercial role expanded with the Magdeburg rights location of the city by the prince of Kraków, Bolesław V the Chaste. The Main Square was designed in its current state with each side repeating a pattern of three, evenly spaced streets set at right angles to the square. The exception is Grodzka Street which is much older and connects the Main Square with the Wawel Castle. Originally the square was filled with low market stalls and administrative buildings and had a ring road running around it. It was King Casimir III the Great who built the original Gothic Cloth Hall and the town hall that filled nearly a quarter of the square. Kraków was the capital of the Kingdom of Poland and a member of the Hanseatic League and the city flourished as an important European metropolis.
The Main Square is located on the Royal Road once traversed during the Royal Coronations at Wawel Cathedral, between the Kraków barbican to the north, and the Wawel Castle to the south. Ever since its creation the square has been considered the center of the city.
The Main Square is surrounded by old brick buildings (kamienica) and palaces, almost all of them several centuries old. Most buildings have acquired a neoclassical look over time, but the basic structures are older and can be seen in their doorways, architectural details and interiors. Vast medieval cellars of the buildings are used as pubs, restaurants and cabarets. The square is lined with many restaurants and cafes. One of the most renowned, Pod Palmą (Under the Palm) at Krzysztofory Palace, was opened in 18 76 by Antoni Hawełka, a purveyor to the imperial court in Vienna. It is the location of the Historical Museum of Kraków, above. Among the many tourism-oriented venues there is also the International Centre of Culture. Probably the most famous of the oldest establishments is the Wierzynek's restaurant, remembered for the great feast of 13 64 which, according to the legend, lasted for twenty one days and helped to reach a consensus between the monarchs of Europe.
Originally the market square consisted of more structures that were crucial to the economy and political life of the city and thus created a microcosm of the city. The Kraków Town Hall existed since the medieval era and was destroyed in the 19th century. Also standing next to the Cloth Hall was the Great Weigh House and the Small Weigh House, which both existed until the 19th century. The foundations of the weigh houses were excavated in the early 21st century and incorporated into an underground museum.
The culture of Kraków is deeply rooted in colorful traditions with the Main Square remaining most lively and crowded year-round. Like other notable old-town squares, Main Market Square in Kraków is also known for its large population of rock pigeons, florist stalls, gift-shops, beer-gardens and horse-drawn carriages.

Around The World goes to Moscow
Moscow is half way around the world from California. Flying into Moscow's Domodedovo Airport is located about an hour (or more depending upon traffic) from central Moscow. There is a taxi desk at the airport where you can pay in advance and a it is a safer way than going with some of the renegade drivers around the airport. An alternative is taking the Aeroexpress into town and then using the Metro.
Moscow's Red Square is is named red not because of Communism or because of the red buildings but derived from a Russian word that once meant beautiful - and now translates to the word red: No one can forget the frightening images of Soviet military parades with rows of marching cadets, tanks and missiles. But that has all changed since Perestroika. One is more likely to see skating rinks, rock concerts or fashion shows these days.
But much of what one sees today at Red Square is not old.
The original Resurrection Gate was destroyed in 1931 but rebuilt in 1996
The original Kazan Cathedral built in the 17 century was destroyed by Soviet authorities in 1936. But blueprints of the building survived and in 1989 it was rebuilt.
But the iconic St. Basil's cathedral is the original which was ordered to be built in 1560 by Ivan the Terrible. A brave architect named Baranovsky was ordered to destroy the cathedral but refused and sent a blunt telegram to the Kremlin which eared him 5 years in prison... but fortunately saved the cathedral and today it is a museum.
There are a couple of five-star hotels in Moscow. The Ararat Park Hyatt is a close walk from Red Square and almost next door to the Bolshoi Theater. With 206 rooms, they have an Armenian and Japanese restaurant and a top floor bar and lounge. The rooms are modern and high tech. Good lines on a king size bed, bedside controls that operate temperature, drapes, lights and things I couldn't even understand. The bathrooms are large with lots of glass, mirrors and dark woods with both bath and separate shower.
The Diamond Fund is a fabulous collection of Russia's state jewels. The original collection dates back to Peter the Great who created the collection which would belong to the state - never to be sold or given away ... only to be added to. But in 1926 2/3rds of the priceless collection was auction off at Christie's in London to raise funds for a struggling Soviet economy. But there are still amazing things including the Orlov Diamond, the world's largest sapphire and numerous Faberge Eggs. Next to the Diamond fund is a separate museum, The Armory Chamber. There are dazzling silver and gold tableware from the Tsar's time, ceremonial weapons, and carriages including the sled that Catherine The Great traveled from St. Petersburg to Moscow in 3-days for her coronation.
The Bolshoi theater dates back to 1776 and today's Bolshoi Theater opened Tsar Alexander II's coronation day in 1856. But recently the theater has been in turmoil over an acid attack on the artistic director in January. Then in March a prima ballerina claimed the the theater was a big brothel and dancers were high-class prostitutes.
The Ritz Carlton is right next to Red Square and many of the 334 guest rooms have views of the stunning sites. With 11 floors and a Ritz Carlton Club - it has many amenities for the traveler. To hotel and rooms have a clubby feel enhanced by the dark cherry and burl wood. The rooms are elegant with Frette linens, marble bathrooms, electronic finger controlled panels for lights, drapes and all in-room technology.
One of the more popular dining destinations is Cafe Pushkin, a traditional Russian restaurant with great borsch and people watching. Getting around Moscow can be challenging- especially with the bandit taxi problems. Walking or taking the metro are the best options.
The Moscow metro dates back to 1935 and with 12 lines and 188 stations. Those station's names are written in Cyrillic so if one isn't fluent - it takes a little advance planning. There is marble and mosaic and many claim that the Russian Metro is the most beautiful in the world. With over 7 million passengers weekly - it certainly is one of the more crowded Metros in the world.
The eternal flame at the Tomb of The Unknown solider next to the Kremlin Wall is a moving sight. It holds the remains of soldiers killed in the Battle of Moscow in 1941. Inscribed is Your name is unknown , your deed immortal
