Places to see in ( Chicago - USA ) Museum of Contemporary Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is a contemporary art museum near Water Tower Place in downtown Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The museum, which was established in 1967, is one of the world's largest contemporary art venues. The museum's collection is composed of thousands of objects of Post-World War II visual art. The museum is run gallery-style, with individually curated exhibitions throughout the year. Each exhibition may be composed of temporary loans, pieces from their permanent collection, or a combination of the two.
The museum has hosted several notable debut exhibitions including Frida Kahlo's first U.S. exhibition and Jeff Koons' first solo museum exhibition. Koons later presented an exhibit at the Museum that broke the museum's attendance record. The current record for the most attended exhibition is the 2017 exhibition of Takashi Murakami work. Its collection, which includes Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, and Alexander Calder, contains historical samples of 1940s–1970s late surrealism, pop art, minimalism, and conceptual art; notable holdings 1980s postmodernism; as well as contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, and related media. The museum also presents dance, theater, music, and multidisciplinary arts.
The current location at 220 East Chicago Avenue is in the Streeterville neighborhood of the Near North Side community area. Josef Paul Kleihues designed the current building after the museum conducted a 12-month search, reviewing more than 200 nominations. The museum was originally located at 237 East Ontario Street, which was originally designed as a bakery. The current building is known for its signature staircase leading to an elevated ground floor, which has an atrium, the full glass-walled east and west façades giving a direct view of the city and Lake Michigan.

We had a whole day in Chicago before our train for New York left at 9.30pm. We went to the Museum of Contemporary Photography, 360 Chicago to see the incredible views over Lake Michigan and the skyline, and also popped into the Museum of Contemporary Art. It was a jam packed day and we still had time to hang out in the Legacy Club at Chicago Union Station!

Renzo PIANO - The Modern Wing

Designed by the 1998 Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano [ the Modern Wing provides in 2009 a NEW home for the museum's collection of 20th- and 21st-century art. Now a decade in the making, this 264,000 square-foot building makes the Art Institute [ the second largest art museum in the United States. The building houses the museum's world-renowned collections of modern European painting and sculpture, contemporary art, architecture and design, and photography. The extraordinary scope and quality of these collections are a revelation; each displayed more comprehensively than ever before. The Modern Wing allows the Art Institute to take its rightful place as one of the world's great collections of modern and contemporary art. The NEW Modern Wing is being built between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive, at the northeast corner of the block the Art Institute of Chicago currently occupies. The addition will complete the cultural, urban campus of the museum. The new street-level entrance on Monroe Street will connect Millennium Park to the heart of the existing museum through the new Griffin Court. On the first floor, this daylit court will be flanked by new educational facilities, public amenities, galleries, and a garden, all of which will better actively link the Art Institute with urban life. The second and third floors will be dedicated to art and the viewing of art. The third floor will be completely lit by natural light. Below street level will be mechanical systems, art storage, and support facilities for the entire Art Institute. Flying above the art pavilion will be a shelter that filters the sun to create the natural shaded light conditions ideal for the enjoyment of art. This shelter is a kind of flying carpet made of aluminum leaves that perform the same job as the tree canopies all around in the park. It is a soft machine that sensitively levitates above the new wing, vibrantly screening the light. All this is made easier in a city that is built on precise north-south and east-west axes, perfectly in tune with the cycle of the sun, like a solar machine. The Modern Wing shelter will give the museum what it needs in terms of light, much as the open lattice of the Pritzker Pavilion gives shelter to the Great Lawn in terms of sound. Limestone, a material used in the construction of the entire museum from its original Beaux Arts palace to recent additions, rises from the ground like a topographic relief, massive and solid, as though it has always been there. Above this topos, the building stands light, transparent, and permeable in steel and glass, in the great tradition of Chicago buildings: solid and robust yet at the same time light and crisp. The Nichols Bridgeway goes from the heart of Millennium Park to the public terrace of the Modern Wing, crossing high above Monroe Street like a fine blade. The sharp metal reminds us of the bold structures characteristic of Chicago. The bridge does what all bridges do: it connects two different worlds and makes it possible to share experiences, providing beautiful views for people walking up towards the sunlight or down in front of the unique Chicago skyline.

Printers History, Stained Glass Panel From the Smith Museum, Navy Pier Chicago
As yet another in a series of late season snow storms rolled through Chicago early in March. I was suffering cabin fever and had to get out of the house. So I braved the storm and went down to Navy Pier for a return to the Smith Museum. They have dozens, more than a hundred magnificent pieces of art glass. And it should be no surprise that someone who likes neon would also be attracted to these beautiful works of art. I took a lot of photos and video but stopped posting them because I didn't get a good response. The hell with it I like them so I'm now putting the rest up. This tells the history of printing in gorgeous art glass.
This is a great little spot one which I will be showing more of. What's not to like it's free and right next to the Billy Goat's spot.

More about the UChicago Harper Lectures:

Photographer and professor Laura Letinsky will consider these questions and more as she takes you into the world of contemporary photography, exploring her own art-making and that of others.
Laura Letinsky is a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago. She’s exhibited her work at the Getty , the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Photographers’ Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art. Think Art | Agony & Ecstasy | Chicago |
Th!nkArt™ is an art and policy salon that has featured established and emerging artists from Europe, the United States and South America.
Launched in 2006 by Laurie R. Glenn, our aim is to forge a dialogue between the worlds of art and politics. Th!nkArt was built on the legacy of café society, famous in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for gathering artists and intellectuals of the day. Th!nkArt fosters a salon setting for thought-provoking exhibitions that integrate a variety of artistic interpretations including literary readings, music, dance, theatrical performances, film, and cultural programming.
The dialogue that emerges in a salon environment allows us to understand our joint humanity, says Glenn. We are trying to create something more than the traditional art gallery experience. Our goal is to have people experience a larger vision of the world through our presentation of arts from around the world.
IMG_1372Th!nkArt began its quest to engage a dialogue between art and politics via exhibitions in private residences, and later in our own dedicated gallery spaces in Chicago. Combining the best aspects of both venues, Th!nkArt now continues its work as a virtual salon, creating the appropriate settings for exhibitions and integrative, conversation-starting activities in third-party homes, galleries, and public spaces.
APARTÉ: A CAFÉ-SOCIETY CELEBRATION
We call our exhibitions Apartés™. In French, aparté means something that is apart. We do so to underscore our deep desire to move art from the canvas to a conversation between human beings about art, philosophy, politics, and the world at large. We have been successful in creating many such conversations at numerous, well-noted Apartés. Our attendees have ranged from collectors, professionals, art patrons, gallery owners, and artists, to civic and philanthropic leaders, museum board members, and residents of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, and the world.
ART FAIRS & PARTNERSHIPS
Th!nkArt has participated in a series of international art fairs including the 2007 Bridge Art Fairs in Chicago, London, and Miami; Slick 2008 in Paris; and Art Chicago 2009 and 2010.
In 2008, Th!nkArt curated an exhibition at The Art Center in Highland Park entitled Art Francais featuring both established and emerging French artists. Also in 2008, Th!nkArt arranged with the Hyde Park Art Center to have David Gista featured as part of its Flamenco and Flames exhibition. Th!nkArt also participated in Chicago Artist Month featuring the paintings of Italian artist Carlo LoCascio.
IMG_1444As part of an international human rights summit held at the Hotel de Ville/City Hall of Paris in March 2009, Th!nkArt featured an exhibition of our artist Florent Moutti with the national human rights activist Rev. Patricia Watkins of the United Congress. We also partnered in January 2009 with FLATFILE Galleries as part of a joint gallery exhibition entitled French Kiss & Karma with French and Indian artists.
One of our highlights of 2009 was our partnership with CIMMfest, The Chicago International Movies and Music Festival where in March 2009 we presented both the award-winning photography of Richard Bellia as well as presented four films from across the globe in the salon.
