Driving Downtown - Montgomery - Alabama USA
Driving Downtown - Montgomery Alabama USA - Season 1 Episode 9.
Starting Point: Commerce St
Montgomery is the capital of the U.S. state of Alabama and is the county seat of Montgomery County. Named for Richard Montgomery, it is located on the Alabama River, in the Gulf Coastal Plain. As of the 2010 Census, Montgomery had a population of 205,764. It is the second-largest city in Alabama, after Birmingham, and the 103rd largest in the United States. The Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area had a 2010 estimated population of 374,536. It is the fourth-largest in the state and 136th among United States metropolitan areas.
The city was incorporated in 1819, as a merger of two towns situated along the Alabama River. It became the state capital in 1846, representing the shift of power to the south-central area with the growth of cotton as a commodity crop of the Black Belt and Mobile's rise as a mercantile port. In February 1861, Montgomery was selected as the first capital of the Confederate States of America, until the seat of government moved to Richmond, Virginia, in May of that year. During the mid-20th century, Montgomery was a major site of events in the African-American Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches.
In addition to housing many Alabama government agencies, Montgomery has a large military presence due to Maxwell Air Force Base; public universities Alabama State University, Troy University (Montgomery campus), and Auburn University at Montgomery; private colleges/universities Faulkner University and Huntingdon College; high-tech manufacturing, including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama; and cultural attractions such as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.
Two ships of the United States Navy have been named after the city, including USS Montgomery (LCS-8).
Montgomery has won several national awards including being voted Best Historic City by USA Today, being named an All-America City in 2014 by the National Civic League, being named a Top City For Job Growth in 2014 by ziprecruiter.com, and being named the happiest city in Alabama. Montgomery has also been recognized nationally for its successful, and ongoing downtown revitalization and new urbanism projects with Montgomery having been one of the first cities in the nation to implement Smart Code Zoning.

The Negro Southern League, A Baseball History, 1920 – 1951 presented by William J. Plott
The Negro Southern League (NSL) was a baseball minor league that operated intermittently from 1920 to 1951. It served as a valuable feeder system to the Negro National League (NNL) and the Negro American League (NAL). Many baseball stars got their start in the NSL, among them five Hall of Famers including Alabama natives Satchel Paige, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. During its history, more than 80 teams were members of the NSL, representing 40 cities in a dozen southern states. This month, author William J. “Bill” Plott explored the history of the league from its beginning to its eventual demise three decades later. A retired journalist and freelance writer, Plott has been a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) since 1971 and a member of SABR's Negro Leagues Committee since its inception. He was
also a member of the Negro Leagues Researchers and Authors Group that compiled Negro league statistics for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Plott’s career as a journalist included stops at The Anniston Star, The Tuscaloosa News, The Montgomery Advertiser, and The Birmingham News. Plott is the author of The Negro Southern League, A Baseball History, 1920-1951 published in 2015 by McFarland Books. Plott has also written four books on Alabama high school sports. He is a native of Opelika and currently resides in Montevallo, Alabama.

NS Westbound 187 Through Gold Hill, Al
March 30, 2008
5:35 PM CDT
Here was the final shot of the afternoon. This is NS 187 quiclky making its way through Gold Hill, Al.
In the 1870s, Gold Hill received a second name, Gold Ridge, after confusion between the railroad stops at Gold Hill and nearby Camp Hill led the postal service to rename the Gold Hill post office. Despite being officially considered Gold Ridge (Info from Wikipidia)
I also met up with a really nice State Trooper. When he first stopped I thought, here we go. his first question was if I posted photos on railpictures.net. I don't but it struck up a 20 minute conversation about railfaning and trains. he even showed me some photos he had downloaded onto his in-car laptop. Either way I was pleasntly suprised and glad to meet a fellow railfan.
Enjoy!

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
