Fodele is of these lands and you feel his spirit in the flight of the orange-kissed butterflies. It is known as the birthplace of El Greco and a visit to the museum that celebrates this iconic Cretan artist is always a must when you stay in this village and even when you are just passing through. El Greco’s home is set in a peaceful rural area just outside the village, next to the Church of the Panayia, overlooking fragrant olive groves that seem to stretch forever in the valley below.

Crete | The El Greco Museum in Fodele. For a particularly rewarding and intimate experience, take the bus or drive from Heraklion to the tiny village of Fodele, about half an hour's ride westwards.
After leaving the main motorway at the sign, a narrow and winding lane runs through the hills that leads you to Fodele, the birthplace of one of the greatest painters of all time -- El Greco.
El Greco was born in the late 15th century as Domenikos Theotokopoulos. You can still see the tiny church where he must have gone as a child, before growing up and moving to Italy and Spain where he painted his masterpieces.
Some reproductions of these masterpieces, lit up the back and are on display at the El Greco Museum at the far end of Fodele. The humble farmhouse that serves as the museum lies among the quiet woods and sheep, enhancing the spiritual magic within.

El Greco's work style is considered to be a synthesis of Renaissance Mannerism and Byzantine art and it is characterized also by personal items, as bright colours and elongated shapes, products of its tendency for originality. In 17th century, the baroque style and the other subsequent artistic currents did not favour El Greco's style and that led to Greco's work being ignored the following centuries. During the 20th century, El Greco was recognized as a forerunner of modern art and his work was re-valued, maintaining to this day, a dominant position among the Master Painters of all Times.

Το μουσείο του ζωγράφου Δομήνικου Θεοτοκόπουλου (El Greco) βρίσκεται απέναντι από τη Βυζαντινή εκκλησία της Παναγιάς στη θέση Θεοτοκιανά του Φόδελε Μυλοποτάμου. Το οίκημα που στεγάζει το μουσείο πιστεύεται ότι ήταν το σπίτι του σπουδαιότερου Κρητικού ζωγράφου (1541-1614), καθώς ο ίδιος αναφέρει ότι γεννήθηκε 25 χλμ βορειοδυτικά του Ηρακλείου, δίπλα σε ένα Βυζαντινό ναό.
Το κτίριο λειτουργεί από το 1998 με έκθεση αντιγράφων έργων του El Greco. Επίσης υπάρχουν πληροφορίες για την οικογένεια του και μια αίθουσα που έχει μετατραπεί σε εργαστήριο ζωγραφικής.

Am ajuns la Fodele în căutarea locului unde s-a născut El Greco, numele lui adevărat fiind Domenikos Theotokopolous. Fodele te impresionează prin faptul că aici poţi auzi susurul izvoarelor de apă, lucru extrem de rar pe timp de vară în Creta, şi bogăţia vegetaţiei, uneori luxuriantă.
