James Turrell - The Light Inside, 1999 (The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston TX) 2017
In the mid-1960s James Turrell pioneered a new concern with the phenomena of space and light, often referred to as the Light & Space Movement. Turrell sought not to depict light but to use light itself as his material, and his earliest works investigated the effects of artificial light. He also developed a number of installations that heightened the relationship between light and the architectural frame. The MFAH commissioned Turrell’s The Light Inside for the underground tunnel linking the museum's Caroline Wiess Law Building with the Audrey Jones Beck Building when the latter opened in 2000. The Light Inside turns the walls of the tunnel into vessels for conducting light. An expanded version of his earlier explorations of light in his Shallow Space Construction series, Turrell’s The Light Inside is an all-encompassing environment. Transcending the traditional confines of built spaces, The Light Inside acts as both a passage and a destination. The raised walkway guides visitors forward and gives them the sense of floating in space, while the changing cycle of illumination (which shifts from blue, to crimson, to magenta) further invites contemplation. The Light Inside makes the experience of moving between the Law and the Beck Buildings not only an exploration of light and space, but also a profound and awe-inspiring experience.

On May 20, 2018, for our series Voices on Art, Art This Week Productions filmed this performance by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and Rathna Kumar at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This performance was filmed in collaboration with the MFAH as part of the annual Ruth K. From the MFAH website–“Blending ekphrastic poetry, which is poetry about art, with the traditions of classical Indian dance, award-winning Houston writer Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and renowned Indian dancer Rathna Kumar present “Poetry in Motion.” This literary dance performance is inspired by the photographs of Raghubir Singh, featured in Modernism on the Ganges and coinciding with Peacock in the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India. Together, the exhibitions show the kind of Indian court paintings that informed Singh’s photographic style.
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is the Betty and Gene McDavid Professor of Writing at the University of Houston. An activist and best-selling author, she has been published in magazines such as the Atlantic and the New Yorker, and in more than 50 anthologies, including The Best American Short Stories, O.Henry Prize Stories, and The Pushcart Prize Anthology.

Voices on Art-At the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston-Lecture about the exhibition Peacock in the Desert
On March 3, 2018, for our series Voices on Art, Art This Week Productions filmed this talk by Karni Singh Jasol, director, Mehrangarh Museum Trust, and co-curator of the exhibition Peacock in the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
“Centuries of royal treasures from India come to the United States for the first time in an epic presentation. Drawn primarily from the collections of the Mehrangarh Museum Trust and the private collections of the royal family of Jodhpur, Peacock in the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India features masterpieces and relics—never before seen beyond palace walls. The lavishly crafted objects selected for the exhibition include finely crafted arms and armor, sumptuous jewels, intricately carved furnishings, a monumental 17th-century court tent, a 1944 L-5 Sentinel aircraft, and much more.
In this talk for MFAH members, Karni Singh Jasol shows how these royal treasures outline the dynamic history of the Marwar-Jodhpur region and the Rathore dynasty that ruled it for more than 700 years.”-From the MFAH website
Thanks to Karni and the MFAH for allowing us to film the talk.
Bringing Major Art Exhibitions to Houston
The importance of the arts and corporate giving to sponsor major exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) is discussed by Amy Purvis, Assistant Director of Development who credits ASC for helping to bring world-class exhibits to Houston.
As an example, she points to the Gifts of the Sultan, one of the most important pan-Islamic exhibitions to travel the world in the last 20 years which came to Houston due, in part, to the sponsorship of ASC and its dedication to cultural bridging.
MFAH was one of only two venues in the United States displaying these objects.
For more information on ASC's involvement in corporate giving and community involvement, please visit the In The Community section at aramcoservices.com.

Xiaoze Xie Artist Talk 2019
Xiaoze Xie discusses his process for his latest exhibition at Talley Dunn Gallery titled, Xiaoze Xie: New Paintings and Photographs. The exhibition consists of seven paintings and eight photographs that continue the artist’s formal investigation of historic books, a prominent interest in Xie’s work that has persisted over twenty years. Xie’s artworks preserve material remnants of our histories, reminding us of what has transgressed and immortalizing manuscripts and their contents to stress their continued relevance. Amidst our heated political climate and the near-relentless stream of information we receive through screens, Xie’s captivating paintings and photographs give us pause to stand still and reflect.
Xiaoze Xie received his Master of Fine Art degrees from the Central Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing and from the University of North Texas. Xie is now the Paul L. & Phyllis Wattis Professor of Art at Stanford University. Xie has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally, with one-person exhibitions at the Asia Society, New York; Denver Art Museum; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art; Knoxville Museum of Art; Modern Chinese Art Foundation, Ghent, Belgium; and the China Art Archives and Warehouse, Beijing. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Shu: Reinventing Books in Contemporary Chinese Art at the China Institute Gallery in New York and Seattle Asian Art Museum, and the traveling exhibition Regeneration: Contemporary Chinese Art from China and the US. Xie’s work has been acquired by many major institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, San Jose Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of California, Boise Art Museum, Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College and the Arizona State University Art Museum. Among other honors, Xie has received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant (2013) and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2003). Xie splits time between Beijing, China and Palo Alto, California.

In Texas, a Museum for a Larger-Than-Life Hero, Sam Houston
From |
Sam Houston was larger than life. The city of Huntsville, Texas, has a 20-meter-tall statue of him. It is said to be the largest statue of any American hero. Nearby, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum holds many of his belongings. Patrick Nolan is the director.
PATRICK NOLAN: He is really the only man in our history who was president of an independent country, also governor of two different states, the only man to have that distinction, Tennessee and Texas, United States senator from Texas, commanding general in a very successful war.
Sam Houston suffered personal and political defeats early in life. In 1832, he joined American settlers in what was then the Mexican territory of Texas.
PATRICK NOLAN: The idea of remaking yourself, of re...kind of...constituting your career, if you will, was there, and Texas was an opportunity to do that.
Sam Houston led Texas rebels to victory against a larger Mexican army at the battle of San Jacinto in 1836. Texas won independence from Mexico before joining the United States. Houston became governor of the new state, but was forced to retire to his farm in Huntsville in 1861. Nolan says Houston refused to sign an oath to support rebellious southern states against the north.
PATRICK NOLAN: He would not take that oath to support the Confederacy. He would resign -- he didn't resign, he would be dismissed, he would be fired before he would do it.
The Civil War was still being fought when Sam Houston died at his home in 1863. James Haley has studied his life. He says Sam Houston and his wife owned slaves, but paid them for extra work. He says Houston angered many southerners because he opposed efforts to expand slavery to other states.
JAMES HALEY: Every year, he had a speaking tour up the Ohio Valley, through Pennsylvania, New York and into New England. That was really the center of his political strength, because he was unpopular in the South because of his stance against slavery.
Sam Houston predicted the Civil War years before the fighting started.
JAMES HALEY: The South will go down, I think he said, in a sea of smoke and ruin and that will be the end of the South as we know it, and the North will think they've won this big victory. He said the North will have its own price to pay; they will reap a harvest of assassination.
One week after the main Confederate army surrendered, President Abraham Lincoln was murdered. Haley says Sam Houston freed all his slaves before he died. The money he gave them helped some become educated and start businesses. Sam Houston continues to interest people, and his influence in Texas remains strong. I'm Barbara Klein.

American Garden Tour - The Gardens at Bayou Bend
I took a trip back to Houston, Texas, where back in another lifetime I was a 'Demi Celebrity' as a DJ on Rock Radio. I never took the time to do The Azalea Trail, so this March I decided to grab my camera, pull on my boots and scoot my way back to H-Town to see the spectacle. Curator of Gardens Bart Brechter gave me a great tour of the grounds and told me the fascinating story of Miss Ima Hogg; Philanthropist and former owner of this estate and gardens on the banks of the Bayou. Join me this tour and you'll see Champion Trees, hundreds of exotic Azaleas and a wild East Texas Woodland boarder, set against formal European Parterre style gardens.
Special thanks to Bart Brechter, Kathryn Jernigan, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, and The River Oaks Garden Club.

BLOG:
The Houston Art Car Ball is a social gathering of sorts for art car participants and enthusiasts alike. Art car parade participants interact with the host community. Trust me, this is usually the best time of the year drawing thousands of people into the streets. Art paraders constantly overflow venues with their artsy cars in tow. Art ball would definitely give Halloween a run for its money because of the interesting costume worn by participants.
The genesis of art car can be traced to Houston artist, Jackie Harris in early 1970s. He magically turned a car with paint and plastic fruit to art all on a budget of $800. That was perhaps the first creative demonstration of art on a mobile object. Ann Haritas, an artist, started “Collision”. Collision was an exhibition at Lawndale art center where Ann featured two art cars. Gradually, others with same interests chirped in and made their contributions. 1986 was the year that history rewarded the campaign of Art Cars in the United States when Rachel Hecker and Trish Herrera organized a New Music Parade. Twenty artist floats and art cars thumped down Montrose Boulevard during the event attracting the media too. The whole texture of art car display started taking shape when Susanne Demchak put together a road show in June 29, 1986 showing low rider demonstrations and children art bike workshops.
The following year, Orange show, under the request of Houston festival international, organized an art parade that is now the platform for art car enthusiasts in Houston and environs. Roadside attractions: The Art Car Parade started in April 1988 with a demonstration involving 40 cars while 2000 spectators cheered on. Two years later, Harrod Blank documented the rainbow scourge of art cars in America and those behind it in a movie and two books. This singular event caused an implosion of art car creativity all over America. Art car artists travel miles to join the parade in Houston every year.
The art car museum was established in February 1998 and has become the silver sanctuary in Houston, Texas for art car creators nationwide. The art museum is passionate about promoting a creative art that in past time was shunned in mainstream and cultural art industry. Art cars, fine arts and other eccentric forms of art have a room for sanity and exposure in the museum. The museum highlights lowriders, mobile contraptions and elaborate art cars while encouraging community exhibitions.
