20190518 124423 Visit to Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine in Kyiv on Museum Day / Золота пектораль (копія) в Музеї історичних коштовностей (Київ)
The Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine was founded in 1963 as treasury, opened in 1969, renovated in 2004. The most famous exhibit is [a copy of] Scythian Pectoral
, mid 4th сentury BCE, found in Tovsta Mohyla tumulus near Ordzhonikidze, Dnipropetrovsk Region., 1971 excavations.
The most ancient collections are the archeological finds, discovered in the Ukrainian territory mostly during the twentieth century.
There are various decorations of ancient people, their weaponry, horses harness, ritual vessels, etc. These original objects reflect the culture of the nomadic Cimmerians, Scythians and Sarmatians who ruled on the Ukrainian lands since the 9th century BCE till the 4th century CE. Many adornments were created for the nomadic elite by the goldsmiths from the Greek cities that appeared on the Northern Shore of the Black Sea since the mid 7th century BCE.
Since the 4th century CE the steppes saw a succession of Turkic tribes arriving from Asia. So the Middle Age collection houses the decorations of Huns, Avars, Khazars, Cumans and other nomads from the 4th - 14th centuries
The highlights of the Museum are the most ancient silver decorations of the Early Slavs (6th - 8th centuries) and the works by the goldsmiths of the Kyivan Rus (9th – early 13th centuries). There are also outstanding collections of Ukrainian Goldsmithery and the works by the goldsmiths of Russia from the 16th – early 20th centuries. The MHTU also houses magnificent collections of Silver Judaica and European Silver.

Historical Museum Kornyakt Palace, Italian Courtyard in Lviv Ukraine.
???????? Historical Museum Kornyakt Palace in Lviv, Ukraine.
The Kornyakt House is the beauty and pride of Ukrainian Renaissance architecture, erected in the second half of the 16th century.
The modern look of the palace is a combination of multi-time and multi-style layering.
In the royal halls of the palace there is an exposition “Historical Values”, which represents the art treasures of the XVII - XIX centuries: painting, porcelain, furniture, watches, orders, glass samples.
According to the laws of urban planning of the 16th century, all houses located on the Market Square in Lviv were allowed to have no more than three windows on the facade. This was a kind of rule of equal opportunities, because each window on the ground floor could be used to equip a workshop, store or pharmacy, as well as for advertising. Even the richest citizen of Lviv, a former Moldovan customs officer and wine merchant from Greece, Konstantin Kornyakt, could not break this rule. And only later, having received a noble title for services to the Polish kings, he obtained permission to build a palace with six windows. So, in 1580, on the Rynok Square, three-story and six-window stoneworks, an unrivaled example of residential renaissance culture, were built .
An extraordinary attraction of the Kornyakt Palace is the Italian courtyard, which is surprisingly similar to the typical courtyards of Florence and Rome.
Visitors here have a unique opportunity to stand at the pranger - a shameful pillar, which in the Middle Ages served as a place for punishing criminals.
On the territory of the Italian courtyard there is a cozy cafe and an antique shop.

Scythian Gold 4 | Virtual Museum Tour
A find that provoked a confrontation between republics. The courage that laid the foundation for one of the best museums in the CIS. An exhibit that drew the attention of the whole world.
Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine. Today, this is one of the best museums in the former territories of the Soviet Union. Before this, it was a kind of long-term project. The idea and prerequisites for its appearance arose back in the mid-1950s. But the first official document appeared only 9 years later. It took more than five years on top of that before it opened its doors to visitors. There are so many exhibits and stunning stories connected to them collected inside, that they continue to amaze visitors even after 50 years of the museum’s existence. Like, for example, the finds from the Melitopol Barrow, which was explored in the summer of 1954. These were the very studies that laid the foundations of the current museum. It all started with the discovery of a real masterpiece of Greco-Scythian toreutics – the golden lining for a Scythian gorytos. But almost immediately after acquiring this and other artifacts, Ukraine risks losing them forever.

Sabatynivka Archaeological Treasure | Virtual Museum Tour
The Mykolayiv Regional Museum of Local Lore. It took a hundred years between its establishment and opening it as a museum. The first findings included in the exhibits were made by sailors back in 1792. The first and genuine Mykolayiv Museum of Local Lore was opened by a lawyer and amateur archaeologist in 1913. It changed its addresses several times and today it is one of the first museums of ancient history in Ukraine. Its objects are the result of exhausting and tremendous archaeological work and a true stroke of luck and success. Yet, sometimes the smile of “lady luck” is more reminiscent of a grin. It is a case of discovery in the village Kuriachi Lozy in the Mykolayiv oblast.

Kiev: Site of Ukraine's Maidan Revolution
I had a great time exploring Ukraine's bustling capital, Kiev!
However, I was a little embarrassed how little I had previously known about Ukraine's 2014 revolution. What started as a small, student protest ended up leading to a new Ukrainian government, Russian invasions, and today's tense relationship between US and Russia.
If you're curious about the revolution, there's lots of interesting videos online. I enjoyed VICE News's coverage, especially this video: There's also a great documentary on Netflix called Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom.
Flea markets in Kiev, a museum of war and atomic disaster

Archaeologists discover huge black gemstone jet belt buckle
An extraordinary 2,137-year-old belt buckle been dug from a grave of a young woman who lived before the birth of Christ. The ancient fashionista, nicknamed Natasha by archaeologists, was found with a black rectangular accessory worn as a belt buckle. Her tomb was discovered during the draining of a vast man-made reservoir in the mountainous Republic of Tuva, Siberia, which stretches across 240 square miles. The video shows archaeologists brushing away dust on the skeleton to unveil the ancient accessory. The ancient fashionista, nicknamed Natasha by archaeologists, was found with a black rectangular accessory, in the man-made reservoir, known as the Ala-Tey, in the mountainous Republic of Tuva, SiberiaThe ancient burial plot is described as 'The Russian Atlantis' for it is usually submerged under 56ft of water before being drained for a few weeks every year. The giant reservoir known as the Ala-Tey necropolis in the so-called Sayan Sea is upstream of the Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam, Russia's biggest power plant. The region is also a favourite vacation spot for Vladimir Putin. The mobile lookalike is made of black gemstone jet, a type of lignite, with inlays of semi-precious stones. The ancient buckle measures 7 inches by 3.5 inches and is inlaid with decorations of turquoise, carnelian and mother-of-pearl. An archaeologist measures the skeleton, known as Natasha, with her black buckle belt that she took to the afterlifeIt measures 7 inches by 3.5 inches and is inlaid with decorations of turquoise, carnelian and mother-of-pearl. Archaeologist Dr Pavel Leus said: 'Natasha's' burial with a Hunnu-era (Xiongnu) iPhone remains one of the most interesting at this burial site.' 'Hers was the only belt decorated with Chinese wuzhu coins which helped us to date it,' said the academic. Graves of prehistoric civilisations dating from the Bronze Age to the time of Genghis Khan are located at the reservoir. The giant reservoir known as the Ala-Tey necropolis in the so-called Sayan Sea is upstream of the Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam, Russia's biggest power plant Archaeologists carefully handle the 2,137-year-old buckle. The site has been called a 'scientific sensation' by leader of the expedition Dr Marina KilunovskayaPrevious findings include two partly-mummified prehistoric fashionistas buried with the tools of their trade. One was called 'Sleeping Beauty' because she was dressed in silk for the afterlife and was at first believed to be a priestess. However the woman is now thought to have been a leather designer. The second was a weaver laid to rest with her wooden spindle packed inside a sewing bag.A total of 110 burials appeared on an island in the reservoir at Ala-Tey site.Leader of the expedition Dr Marina Kilunovskaya from the St Petersburg Institute of Material History Culture described the Ala-Tey site as 'a scientific sensation'.
