We visited the London Docklands Museum on Easter Weekend. It was part of our fun weekend in London... sightseeing. Obviously, the UK weather forecast decided the great outdoors wasn't for us! It rained... and rained... and rained.
The Thames River Boat (part of the Oyster card) would have been a lovely chance to see the riverside attractions. In reality, it was steamy windows and raindrops on the outside.
Next the wet walk through Canary Wharf, which looked amazing, but torrential.
Then onto the Museum of London Docklands. Learning about the history of the area and the connection sugar has to slavery. It was a good museum with plenty to see. It is part of the Museum of London, which is next on our to-do list.

Dopo aver abbandonato i giganteschi e luminosi palazzi di Canary Wharf mi ritrovo nei pressi di una darsena con alcune barche a vela parcheggiate (che in realtà non sono altro che ristoranti) e un museo.
Mi trovo nel West India Quay, una zona dell'Isle of Dogs dove nel passato venivano immagazzinati i prodotti importati (o depredati??) dalle Indie occidentali, come il tè, lo zucchero e rum.
Nel 2003 uno di questi edifici è stato utilizzato per realizzare il Museum of London Docklands.
Visito i due piani del museo intrisi di storia che va dall'epoca coloniale ad oggi passando per la 2° guerra mondiale.
La visita si sviluppa attraverso un percorso cronologico in cui viene raccontata, grazie anche a supporti video, la storia di Londra e della Gran Bretagna avendo come punto di riferimento il fiume Tamigi e i Docklands.
Dopo aver girovagato tra gli alti, grandi e illuminati palazzi del potere bancario e finanziario di Canary Wharf in questi locali ritrovo un senso di umanità.
Nella parte inziale si racconta l'epopea del colonialismo inglese, fatto di conquiste territoriali, depredamento delle risorse locali e malefatte nei confronti delle popolazioni locali.
Una storia di violenza, di schiavismo, il tutto in funzione dell'arricchimento dell'impero inglese.
La stessa identica storia vissuta dagli altri imperi coloniali europei, dalla Spagna al Portogallo, dall'Olanda alla Francia.
L'epopea della cosidetta Europa civile che ruba risorse con la violenza e uccide o rende schiavi interi popoli cosiddetti selvaggi.
Questa è certamente la zona del museo, posizionata al terzo piano, che più mi fa riflettere e che non mi rende certamente fiero di appartenere a quel mondo che si è sempre auto-considerato civile.
Piccolo aneddoto.
All'ingresso vengo accolto da una guida italiana, che mi consegna una guida e mi spiega come è strutturato il museo.
Chiedo se si possono fare foto e video e mi dice che non ci sono problemi, l'importante è non usare flash.
Inizio a riprendere e un ragazzo mi dice che non si possono fare videoriprese.
Faccio notare che la ragazza all'ingresso mi aveva detto che non c'erano problemi ... niente da fare, per lui non posso usare la telecamerina mentre fare foto è possibile.
E vabbè .. proseguo utilizzando solo la fotocamera del mio smartphone Galaxy S.
Vedo il ragazzo confabulare con una donna che presumo essere una responsabile del museo, mi si avvicina nuovamente e mi dice che posso fare le videoriprese.
Un pò infastidito allargo le braccia e in italiano gli dico ironicamente vabbè però cerca di prendere una decisione chiara.
Ovviamente non capisce, fa le spallucce e se ne va.
Ed io torno indietro e riprendo il percorso storico, stavolta con l'ausilio della mia fedele videocamera.
