Transvaal Museum Mammal Hall in Pretoria The Transvaal Museum was founded in 1892. The museum changed locations a number of times as its collection grew. By 1925 the museum moved to its current location, a beautiful sandstone building on Paul Kruger Street. The entrance of this imposing building is decorated with the skeletons of dinosaurs and even a whale.
Some of the collection of the museum, which remained behind in its former location in Boom Street, became known as the National Cultural History Museum in 1964.
The museum currently houses a vast taxidermy collection as well as a number of fossils.
There are four exhibition halls:
Genesis of Life I and II provides a journey through the development of the animal kingdom, from single-celled organisms, right through the human beings. The Genesis of Life II hall is also known as the Mammal Hall.
The Austin Roberts Bird Hall holds a collection of Southern African birds, arranged according to their number in the Roberts Bird Guide. General information on migration, feeding and flight of birds can also be seen in this very well arranged hall.
The Geoscience Museum is a comprehensive collection of different minerals, crystals, and gemstones in Southern Africa, provided by the Council for Geoscience. Where such minerals can be found, as well as what they are used for is thoroughly described in this hall.
There is also a Discovery Centre on the property which provides a hands-on experience to make learning about nature and science more enjoyable.
Night Tours, Science Magic shows and a behind the scenes tour of the Research Department are provided.

Pretoria Natural History Museum entrance : 724Kg granite sphere turned by water jets
When on business recently in South Africa, I thought I'd visit the Natural History Museum in Pretoria. Outside the Museum I found this amazing feat of Engineered Geology.
A 724Kg mass African Red Granite sphere with World Map chemically etched into surface rotating with water jets in a concave stone bowl. Water jets turn the sphere & spent water escapes. Clearance between the sphere & bowl is 0.2mm.(8 thou' of an inch).

Pretoria Art Museum [Various Artists] [Pretoria, South Africa]
Click:
The Pretoria Art Museum occupies an entire city block in the eastern suburb of Arcadia. The current museum building dates back to 1962, although the museum art collection was founded in 1932 when a Lady Michaelis donated a large collection of artworks to the Pretoria city council after the death of her husband. The collection contains mainly South African work and includes pieces by famous South African artists such as Irma Stern, JH Pierneef and Gerard Sekoto.
The striking Pretoria Art Museum building, with its long low concrete facade, was built in 1962 in the distinctly modern International Style and was considered to be very much ahead of its time. As there were already other museums in South Africa boasting fine collections of European art, it was decided that the Pretoria Art Museum would focus primarily on collecting and displaying South African art. Over the years the initial collection of works by South Africa’s ‘Old Masters’ such as Pierneef, Hugo Naudé and Maggie Laubser has been complemented by a growing collection of contemporary art by artists such as Sam Nhlengethwa and Walter Oltmann.
As well as the permanent collection, the museum also houses a reference library and hosts regular temporary art exhibitions by local and international artists.
Guided tours of the museum collection are available and the museum specialises in art tours aimed at school children.
Guided tours for groups of a minimum of 10 people are offered when pre-booked. One option covering South African art is run at 10h00 and 13h00, and lasts an hour. Up to 100 learners can be accommodated at a cost of R10 per person. The other choice is a fun-filled two-hour tour for children aged four to 10 at a cost of R20 each.
