Velázquez’s Masterpieces in Seville and Some New Proposals
Known as “Nova Roma” since the 1500s, the city of Seville had a cherished tradition of classical studies and Italian Renaissance art. If Rome saw the birth of Caravaggio’s revolutionary art, Seville was the cradle of the greatest of all Spanish Golden Age painters: Diego Velázquez. Velázquez’s early work, emerging from the city’s intellectual tradition, was nurtured by his master, Francisco Pacheco, but was in stark contrast to the teacher’s work. It is not yet clear how Velázquez became aware of the new tenebrist naturalism in the manner of Caravaggio, but as a youth the Spaniard championed it with extraordinary skill. Salvador Salort-Pons, Director, President, and CEO, Detroit Institute of Arts, explores Velázquez’s Seville, his early masterpieces, the newly discovered Sevillian paintings, and other works thought to be by the artist’s hand. Among the many places to visit; the Alcazar Palace is a stunning collage of architectural styles like no other. The Cathedral will demonstrate the beauty of status as the burial site of Christopher Columbus. The Metropol Paraiso is the world’s largest wooden structure.

Situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, Seville has a rich Moorish heritage, and used to be a prosperous port that carried out trade with the Americas.
The streets and squares in the historic quarter of the capital of Andalusia are lively and busy. They treasure many constructions that have the World Heritage designation, and many districts are full of traditional culture, like Triana and La Macarena.
Seville is a prominent business and service centre in the south of Spain and has many hotels distributed all over the city which enable visitors to discover endless attractions. Museums and art centres, theme parks, cinemas, theatres and clubs are some of the many leisure options that a great city like Seville holds. Another good excuse to come to the Sevillian capital are the festivals. The celebrations of Easter Week and Feria de Abril (the April Fair), which have been declared of National Tourist Interest, reflect the devotion and folklore of the people of Seville, always open and friendly to visitors. But Seville's appeal does not end there, as the city is also the starting point for the many cultural routes the province offers, such as the Roman Bética Route or the Washington Irving route.
The visitor will also discover the immense natural wealth of this region, which sits halfway between two continents, in natural treasures such as the Doñana Nature Reserve, declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and the Sierra Norte Nature Reserve. They will be the ideal setting for practising outdoor sports, including hiking, horse riding, and cycling routes. If, on the other hand, golf is your sport of choice, then you will be glad to know that Seville has four excellent golf courses in its vicinity

It is quite possible that Seville's Jewish community is, if not the oldest, certainly one of the oldest in Spain. Híspalis (Seville) was, in fact, a place of unrivalled importance on the Iberian Peninsula, with the Roman general Escipión later making it his capital. The Jews must have been attracted by the great city which gave its name to all Hispania.
Seville was Spain's most populous city, the intellectual capital of the kingdom.
Seville's Jewish community was one of the largest and without doubt the most industrious of all. At that time, Seville not only stood out as a result of its trade links, which flourished due to the importance of its river, but also thanks to its medical schools, where Spain's most eminent doctors came to study, including those from Córdoba, such as the great Averroes.

I think that a museum dedicated to flamenco is not a place where people only come to see flamenco shoes or dresses on display. We thought of an interactive museum. Because dance is something that should be watched in motion. It was the idea of Cristina Hoyos to give back to the people what flamenco gave to her during all of her life.

The Spanish city of Seville commemorates the first anniversary of the opening of its first museum entirely dedicated to flamenco.
Flamenco is the musical and dance genre that has made Andalusia famous all over the world.
STORYLINE:
The province of Andalusia is often perceived by non-spaniards to be the most typically 'Spanish' of all Spain's regions, and it's capital Seville almost a caricature of what many people consider it is to be 'Spanish'.
Seville is the traditional home of flamenco, Spain's best known art form.
The quick rhythmic stamping of feet and clapping of hands typifies the flamenco dance.
A few blocks away from La Giralda cathedral, stands Seville's Museo del Baile Flamenco (Museum of Flamenco dance).
The 18th century building hosts a unique blend of activities and exhibitions where visitors can find everything related to Spain's most famous dance.
The project began in 2005 when Cristina Hoyos, one of Spain's greatest flamenco dancers (bailaoras) and director of Andalusian Flamenco Ballet, proposed the creation of a museum solely dedicated to flamenco.
Cristina not only financed part of the venue herself, but also donated many of her costumes, jewels, shoes and memorabilia.
The museum comprises a wide variety of activities. Visitors can take beginners or advanced flamenco lessons given by Cristina Hoyos herself and other members of her ballet company.
Hoyos says that flamenco is constantly evolving into new styles, but not all of these styles remain fashionable for ever.
Visitors can also visit the an interactive multimedia display that combines historical memorabilia with state-of-the-art technology.
Sophie Mulenburg is a German painter who arrived in Seville a few years ago and decided to dedicate her life to flamenco.
