Why I Love MOWA
In April 2013 the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) in West Bend, Wisconsin opened a new state-of-the-art building, which doubled its gallery square footage and vastly expanded its capacity to present exhibitions, public programs, educational studios, and special events. MOWA didn't just open a new building; it unveiled an entirely new organization, resulting in an institutional transformation of unprecedented magnitude. Watch this video and see the impact that the new MOWA has had.
Kocher Slideshow - History of West Bend (WI)
Mr. Edward G. Kocher, former sales executive for the West Bend Company and director emeritus of the former West Bend Art Galley (now MOWA - Museum of Wisconsin Art) takes a group of 1980's students on a field trip back through time. An artist and historian himself, Mr. Kocher's drawing of the old Washington County Courthouse appeared on the cover of the West Bend Historical Album, Bicentennial Edition published in 1976.

Wow! West Bend totally surprised us. Yes, we know it's only an hour northwest of Milwaukee, but we didn't know that this city has it all - and then some.
West Bend is home to some true Wisconsin treasures. Where else are you going to find a fire fighting apparatus collection, a private zoo complete with celebrity bears named Lewis and Clark AND world class trombone musicians and craftsmen that will show you how they make trombones?
John made some treasured memories too as he made soap, pickled watermelon rinds (and ate them, too --- truly yummy!), nosed around a fantastic downtown residence that used to be a hardware store and took orders at the local custard and burger shop. The girls at A Conversation Piece really got him talking, and the gigantic painting at the spectacular Museum of Wisconsin Art left him speechless.
As John said, we're so glad that West Bend is close to Milwaukee because we love West Bend!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Middleton (#703)
[Latest Airdate: May 3, 2018]
[Original Airdate: January 25, 2018]
Before we showed up in Middleton, we thought this city was started as a suburb of Madison. Wrong. When we got here, we thought that Middleton was divided into the industrial part and the neighborhood part. Not so wrong, but both parts completely impressed us. And after we found the Mustard Museum, we knew we were spot on!
There are tons of places to work in Middleton and John got into some really neat ones, like ETC (Electronic Theater Controls), Standard Imaging, Morley Airplane Company, and Springs Window Fashion. Topped off by a visit to the doll hospital at American Girl, the industrial side of town was an eye-opening whirlwind!
And the living is good in Middleton, too. John learned how to play cricket (not really --- he still doesn't know the rules), held backyard chickens and rode the Metro Transit while talking to welcoming residents. He played board games, helped clean and ate great Chinese food with some Middleton entrepreneurs.
We left with thoughts of kind people, successful businesses and ... mustard. Never thought we'd say that! Thanks, Middleton!

This episode is not community specific. What we chose were 12 organizations/places/people we wanted to cover in southeastern Wisconsin because... well, because we wanted to. The producers all got to pick based on their own curiosities. The only rule was that we had to be able to shoot at least three segments in one day and be back to the station in time for dinner every night. What does it say about a group who chooses Jones Island, a bell museum, Frank Lloyd Wright, pizza, ice cream and the Zoo? It says that apparently we're not all interested in the same things, but we are all really glad this worked out because we loved it. A special thanks to everyone in this episode for saying Yes instead of Why? Whether by region or by community, it's awesome to work in Wisconsin!

[Latest Airdate: November 9, 2017]
[Original Airdate: February 16, 2017]
Delavan is completely unique, especially for the Around the Corner crew. This the only downtown we've ever been to that is defined by brick streets, a water tower and circus statues. Delevan is home to our only cookie jar museum, the one and only Bradley's department store and the only company we've been to that produces tubes used to artificially inseminate poultry and cattle. In Wisconsin, this is home to the only school for the deaf and the largest percentage of Latinos. For John, only Delavan will be remembered as the place that provided his craziest interviewee and his shortest... (Lois Stritt, you're the short one. Rafael Hernandez, you're the crazy one, but you both already knew that, right?) Yep. Only in Delavan. And we loved it!

Frank Lloyd Wright - a lesson in architecture
Frank Lloyd Wright spent more than 70 years creating designs that revolutionized the art and architecture of the twentieth century. Many innovations in today's buildings are products of his imagination. In all he designed 1141 works - including houses, offices, churches, schools, libraries, bridges, museums and many other building types. Of that total, 532 resulted in completed works, 409 of which still stand.
However, Wright's creative mind was not confined to architecture. He also designed furniture, fabrics, art glass, lamps, dinnerware, silver, linens and graphic arts. In addition, he was a prolific writer, an educator and a philosopher. He authored twenty books and countless articles, lectured throughout the United States and in Europe, and developed a remarkable plan for decentralizing urban America (Broadacre City) that continues to be debated by scholars and writers even to this day - decades after its conception.
