Among her earliest memories was a neighbor heading off to fight in World War I; her three brothers served during World War II in the Canadian Armed Forces, as did her husband, who was born and raised in the United States. Mary Ida talks about raising her family both on PEI and in Natick, Mass., where they moved in the 1950s.

Izzy's Fire: Finding Humanity in the Holocaust
Can a book change lives? Sam Stark, a student in Chesterfield County Public Schools, recounts how Izzy's Fire: Finding Humanity in the Holocaust opened his eyes to how bad discrimination can be. It inspired him to take a stand against bullying in his high school. Author Nancy Wright Beasley shares the story of Izzy’s Fire and its effect in schools in the United States, Lithuania, and Israel.
Izzy’s Fire tells the true story of five Lithuanian Jewish families, some of whom escaped Kovno Ghetto at the height of the Holocaust, and were sheltered by a poor Catholic farm family. Israel Izzy Ipson helped his family escape from Kovno Ghetto, one of the most notorious killing fields for Jews in Lithuania. The Paskauskas family, who risked their own lives to save the families, hid them in 9 x 12 x 4 underground potato hole as World War II raged around them.
Following their liberation, the Ipsons relocated to Richmond, Virginia. Their story has been re-created at the Virginia Holocaust Museum.
