La Paz Bolivia An Exceptional South American Experience
La Paz Bolivia An Exceptional South American Experience
La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia, while Sucre is the constitutional capital and the seat of the Supreme Court. La Paz was established in 1548, and is in the Andes. Altitude of the city ranges from about 4,058 m above sea level in El Alto to 3,100 m in the lower residential area. It is the highest national capital in the world.
The sight from the air as one flies into La Paz is incredible. First, one sees the sprawling shantytowns of El Alto, slowly giving way to the sight of La Paz itself, clinging tenuously to the sides of what looks like a large gash in the earth. La Paz was built in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River (now mostly built over), which runs northwest to southeast. The city's main thoroughfare, which roughly follows the river, changes names over its length, but the central tree-lined section running through the downtown core is called the Prado.
La Paz geography, in particular the altitude, reflects the city's society: the lower you go, the more affluent. While many middle-class paceños live in high-rise condos near the center, the really rich houses are located in the lower neighborhoods southwest of the Prado. The reason for this division is that the lower you go in the city the milder the weather is. And looking up from the center, the surrounding hills are plastered with makeshift brick houses of those struggling in the hope of one day reaching the bottom. The satellite city of El Alto, in which the airport is located, is spread over a broad area to the west of the canyon, on the altiplano.
There are three types of shared public transportation in La Paz: regular buses or micros; shared vans, called mini buses, and shared taxis running set routes advertised on the windshield, called trufis. The easiest way to get around is by taxi. If you ever find yourself to be lost, in general the easiest thing is to simply walk downhill. You will eventually find yourself on the Prado or another main avenue.
La Paz is a city which can be a sight in itself, and there are several viewing places or miradores offering impressive panoramas.
Mirador Killi Killi, (from Avenida Sucre take Avenida La Bandera and then walk straight up, the mirador is on the right side). You can get the best view of La Paz from here. No entrance fee. You can either walk or take a taxi to get there.
Parque Laikacota, (at the top of Av. Ejercito west of the city center). The best panorama from within the bowl, with clear views of the city and the rugged terrain to the east, all the way to Mt. Illimani. Admission is Bs 3.50.
Mirador Monticulo, (next to Plaza España). This small park (free entry) has a church and lots of trees which block much of the city, but the clear view of Illimani makes it an evening hotspot for couples.
Av. Camacho, (In the heart of downtown). Points straight to Illimani, and from the intersection with the Prado it's framed by skyscrapers in an interesting juxtaposition.

Bolivia Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Bolivia – Welcome to the “Rooftop of the World” where you can experience breathtaking landscapes, ancient civilizations and colorful wildlife. Check out the best things to see and do in Bolivia.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Bolivia:
A #vacation to #Bolivia, a landlocked South American country, holds the promise of discovery for adventurous souls. While pretty Sucre is Bolivia’s judicial capital, La Paz is its political capital and also its main tourist hub.
Journey high to the Mirador Laikacota for city views. Deep in the valley below #visit the central Plaza Murillo, home to the most precious buildings: the Presidential Palace, National Congress and Metropolitan Cathedral. Stay near the Plaza San Francisco for its proximity to hidden gems, such as the curious Witches’ Market, the Musical Instrument Museum and the Coca Museum.
Bolivia is a diamond in the rough; relatively undeveloped, but extremely authentic, colorful and cultural. Bolivia’s riches shine through in the country’s high altiplanos, its floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca, the silver mines of Potosi, the infinite salt flats of the Salar de Uyuni and the untamed tropical lowlands in the vast Amazon basin.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Salt Cathedral Bogota Aug 13 2015
Salt Cathedral Bogota Aug 13 2015 To visit the Salt Cathedral in Bogota, prepare for a few surprises! You can taste the 100% pure salt right off the walls! An electric light system lights your way through dark tunnels, and shows the flags of every country!
The Salt Cathedral is the only cathedral in the world built inside a salt mine 590 feet deep. It has nine different spaces with capacities ranging from 14 to 3,000 people. The Cathedral also features a salt waterfall, stores and a coffee shop 180 meters underground! Lisa bought a new emerald ring–gems and shopping underground. And yes, you can also attend mass there! The Salt Cathedral of Bogota is a highly unique experience.

Paleontology Museum Tarija Bolivia - Bolivia Tourism
The Tarija Paleontology Museum, one of the main tourist attractions in Tarija, Bolivia, houses fossils and specimens dating back millions of years. The two-story building has a colorful history and if you look closely, you'll find it has sculpted trilobites and brachiopods on its exterior. The bottom floor houses fossils and is the Paleontology Museum. The second floor houses remnants of pottery, fabric, jewelry, arrowheads, skulls and skeletons, and hundreds of other interesting finds that tell us about the human and cultural history of the region that is now Tarija, Bolivia. This is the Archeology Museum. The stars of the show are definitely three massive skeletons.

When ready, browse vacation packages to Quito:
San Francisco de Quito, as this harmonious city is officially called, is the capital of Ecuador and sits high in the Andes straddling the equator. A #Quito #vacation means balance. Its World Heritage protected Old Town is contrasted by its progressive New Town.
The New Town, or La Mariscal, is centered on the bustling Plaza del Quinde and has markets, trendy cafés and nightlife. #Visit the Plaza de la Independencia, the Civic heart of Old Town, overlooked by the Municipal Palace, Archbishop’s Palace and Presidential Palace.
The Pichincha Volcano was once the setting of a historic battle that resulted in Quito’s liberation from Spain. But it’s the Cotopaxi Volcano, that is the Quito’s most famous landmark. While in the area, you can’t miss the Mitad del Mundo Monument and the Intiñan Solar Museum where you walk the line of the equator and be in two hemispheres at the same time.
