360° Video: Chelyabinsk Meteor | California Academy of Sciences
Make an explosive entry into Earth’s atmosphere in this stereoscopic 360° video of the Chelyabinsk meteor’s arrival in February 2013—an immersive scene from our new planetarium show, “Incoming!”
For decades, we have detected explosive airbursts caused by meteors entering Earth’s atmosphere. The most powerful one took place on February 15, 2013, over the Russian city Chelyabinsk, and we have reconstructed that event using observational data. A stony meteor almost 20 meters in diameter (slightly smaller than Morrison Planetarium) exploded in the upper atmosphere, leaving behind a trail of dust and debris that stretched more than a hundred kilometers. The explosion also created a burst of light brighter than the Sun and a shockwave that shattered windows and damaged buildings in places we highlight in the video. Nearly 1,500 people sought medical attention in the days after the blast, mostly for injuries from shattered glass. At the end of the video, we compare the size of the affected region to the area of metropolitan New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area, and greater Tokyo.

RUSSIA: MICHAEL DEBAKEY CLAIMS YELTSIN'S OPERATION HAS BEEN SUCCESS
English/Nat
Top American heart surgeon Michael DeBakey believes Russian President Boris Yeltsin will be a new, vigorous man following successful heart surgery.
DeBakey advised local doctors who performed bypass surgery on the 65-year-old Russian president last week in Moscow.
In an exclusive interview with APTV, before departing Moscow, he said Yeltsin had a good, normal heart now.
The American heart specialist Michael DeBakey left Moscow Sunday, his mission successfully completed.
He had spent a week in the capital advising the local doctors who performed President Boris Yeltsin's quintuple bypass surgery.
And the 88-year-old consultant believed the surgery had been so successful, his advice was no longer needed.
SOUNDBITE:
I'd be glad to come back if they call me, but I doubt seriously that they'll need me now. In my opinion, as we say, he's out of the woods. He's on his way now to good recovery, and that pleases us very much. So of course I'm always available - you know my Russian colleagues are my closest friends and all they have to do is call me on the phone, I'm right here.
Q: And you think everything will be okay with Mr Yeltsin?
A: Absolutely, he's going to be a new man, yeah, he's got a good normal heart now, so he's going to be a new vigorous man and thank God for it.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael DeBakey, American heart surgeon
Boarding his plane, DeBakey sought to assure the world that Russians could be confident of their leader's health.
SOUNDBITE:
Q: And Russia may sleep quietly?
A: Yeah, absolutely and they can be confident too.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael DeBakey, American heart surgeon
Doctors plan to steadily increase the president's physical therapy and have predicted he could be up to most of his presidential duties within two weeks.

The Yaroslavl Eye Clinic 1903
The patron of the Yaroslavl Eye Hospital was the famous Yaroslavl ophthalmologist Ivan Katsaurov. Katsaurov had attended upon Empress Alexandra Feodorovna and had been offered a post as Court Doctor. He declined the invitation, citing the need to treat patients in Yaroslavl.
The city authorities provided a site for the hospital, for free, on the bank of the River Volga and the provincial architect, A.A. Nikiforov was contracted to design the Russian style building.
The hospital was opened in 1903 and provided free medical care for the poor and restoring sight to dozens of patients.
The good doctor died in December 1914.
The hospital continued to operate, well after the Revolution………..

SUMMARY
=======
Yekaterinburg ( yih-KAT-ər-in-burg; Russian: Екатеринбу́рг, IPA: [jɪkətʲɪrʲɪnˈburk]), alternatively romanized Ekaterinburg, is the fourth-largest city in Russia and the administrative centre of Sverdlovsk Oblast, located on the Iset River east of the Ural Mountains, in the middle of the Eurasian continent, on the Asian side of the boundary between Asia and Europe. It is the main cultural and industrial centre of the oblast. In 2018, it had an estimated population of 1,501,652. Yekaterinburg has been dubbed the third capital of Russia, as it is ranked third by the size of economy, culture, transportation and tourism. It is located about 1,420 kilometres (880 mi) to the east of Moscow.
The region was settled and developed by Novgorodians already in the 11th century.
Yekaterinburg was founded on 18 November 1723 and named after the Russian emperor Peter the Great's wife, who after his death became Catherine I, Yekaterina being the Russian form of her name. The city served as the mining capital of the Russian Empire as well as a strategic connection between Europe and Asia at the time. In 1781, Catherine the Great gave Yekaterinburg the status of a district town of Perm Province, and built the main road of the Empire, the Siberian Route, through the city. Yekaterinburg became a key city to Siberia, which had rich resources, and was known as the window to Asia, a reference to Saint Petersburg as a window to Europe. In the late 19th century, Yekaterinburg became one of the centres of revolutionary movements in the Urals. In 1924, after Russia became a socialist state, the city was named Sverdlovsk (Russian: Свердло́вск) after the Bolshevik leader Yakov Sverdlov. During the Soviet era, Sverdlovsk was turned into an industrial and administrative powerhouse. In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the city returned to its historical name.
Yekaterinburg is one of the most important economic centres in Russia, and the city had experienced economic and population growth recently. Some of the tallest buildings in Russia are located in the city.

SUMMARY
=======
A meteorite is a solid piece of debris from an object, such as a comet, asteroid, or meteoroid, that originates in outer space and survives its passage through the atmosphere to reach the surface of a planet or moon. When the object enters the atmosphere, various factors such as friction, pressure, and chemical interactions with the atmospheric gases cause it to heat up and radiate that energy. It then becomes a meteor and forms a fireball, also known as a shooting star or falling star; astronomers call the brightest examples bolides. Meteorites vary greatly in size. For geologists, a bolide is a meteorite large enough to create an impact crater.Meteorites that are recovered after being observed as they transit the atmosphere and impact the Earth are called meteorite falls. All others are known as meteorite finds. As of August 2018, there were about 1,412 witnessed falls that have specimens in the world's collections. As of 2018, there are more than 59,200 well-documented meteorite finds.Meteorites have traditionally been divided into three broad categories: stony meteorites that are rocks, mainly composed of silicate minerals; iron meteorites that are largely composed of metallic iron-nickel; and stony-iron meteorites that contain large amounts of both metallic and rocky material. Modern classification schemes divide meteorites into groups according to their structure, chemical and isotopic composition and mineralogy. Meteorites smaller than 2 mm are classified as micrometeorites. Extraterrestrial meteorites are such objects that have impacted other celestial bodies, whether or not they have passed through an atmosphere. They have been found on the Moon and Mars.
