MISSISSIPPI DELTA SECRET HIDDEN COMMUNITY
Down a long dirt road I found a hidden community in the heart of the Mississippi delta.. I was NOT expecting this.
The Mississippi Delta, also known as the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta, is the distinctive northwest section of the U.S. state of Mississippi which lies between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers.

War Comes to the Mississippi Delta Exhibit - commercial on WLBT
The Museum of the Mississippi Delta commemorates the sesquicentennial of the Civil War in the Delta with the exhibition War Comes to the Mississippi Delta, opening January 26, 2013 and running through August 31, 2013.
VISIT OUR PHOTO GALLERY (UNDER MUSEUM IN THE MAIN MENU) TO SEE PICTURES FROM THE OPENING RECEPTION ON JANUARY 25, 2013. MuseumoftheMississippiDelta.com.
The exhibition tells the story of the Union forces' attempt to navigate the intricate rivers of the Mississippi Delta during the winter of 1863. Known as the Yazoo Pass Expedition, the attempt ultimately ended in failure, as Confederate forces held strong at a hastily built outpost near Greenwood known as Fort Pemberton.
The most noted aspect of the Confederate defenses was the ocean steamer Star of the West, originally a Union transport ship, listed as the first ship fired upon during the Civil War at Fort Sumter. After being captured by Rebel forces, the ship met her demise when it was sunk next to Fort Pemberton to block the passage of Union ships through the channel as they headed toward their destination: Vicksburg.
Following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, the lives of African Americans in Mississippi and the Delta changed. Black troops began to be organized and trained by the summer of 1863 for the Union. The best example of their brave service came near Milliken's Bend, outside of Vicksburg.
The Museum will display Civil War artifacts from its collection including a partial steering wheel from the Star of West. The Lady Polk, a cannon used in the Battle of Fort Pemberton, is on permanent view at the Museum. There are only 17 examples of the Civil War-era cannon left in existence today, and the Lady Polk is the only one that has been restored for firing. Vicksburg National Military Park will loan items recovered from the Union ironclad, U.S.S. Cairo.
Stellar examples of period clothing including a butternut officer's frock worn by Cpt. T. Otis Baker is on loan from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, along with an officer's sword, muzzle-loading pistol, a British import carbine and a forage cap worn by Maj. Gen. William Walthall. A rare 1860s homespun dress and a child's outfit will help tell the story of women and children on the home front.
The exhibition opens Saturday, January 26 in a special free event which includes portrayals of General Ulysses S. Grant, Confederate and Union re-enactors and period music.
The exhibition is funded in part by grants received from the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau. Star of the West sponsors are: Entergy, Staplcotn, Wade, Inc., WABG-TV, MAX 99 WYMX, Jean Cadney, Marion Howard and John Lucas III.

Mississippi is a southern U.S. state with the Mississippi River to its west, the state of Alabama to its east, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Its Mississippi Delta region is considered the birthplace of blues music, honored at the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale. Also in the region is the Vicksburg National Military Park, preserving the site of a critical Civil War battle.

JACKSON MISSISSIPPI - DOWNTOWN 2018
Jackson, Mississippi - the Capital city. Join me as I zig zag the downtown streets and explore the city.
Jackson is the capital city of Mississippi. The statewide Mississippi Freedom Trail runs through the city, encompassing a number of historic sites that were significant in the civil rights movement. These include the Medgar Evers Home Museum and the landmark Mississippi State Capitol building. In leafy LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science includes an aquarium and nature trails.

Mississippi Delta: Blues Trail road trip
Louisiana may be the birthplace of Jazz, but Mississippi Delta, is where the Blues were born! Music, comfort food and southern hospitality run deep in the Delta. My journey followed Highway 61, which is also known as the “Blues Trail.” One could argue that Highway 61 rivals Route 66, certainly for its musical significance.
I found the Mississippi Delta to exude charm and hospitality, while its music permeated my soul and found a place in my heart.

Mississippi U.S.A. 1961.
F2013.134.2.0048
Description: Freedom riders had started to travel across the south with the purpose of contributing to the cause of of eliminating discrimination based on race or ethnicity by testing segregation policies in bus terminals. In May of 1961, a bus carrying fourteen black and white freedom riders arrived at a bus station in Jackson, Mississippi, where they were escorted and guarded by armed troops, sixteen patrol cars, and an airplane. At a previous stop in Alabama, the bus had been attacked and passengers had been injured. After exiting the bus, the riders went inside of the bus station and attempted to use the white only restaurant and restrooms. When they refused to move on, they were arrested and charged with disturbing the peace and/or inciting a riot rather than breaking Mississippi's segregation laws. In this documentary, there is footage of the bus carrying the freedom riders into Jackson, Mississippi, the riders unboarding the bus at the bus station, entering the bus station, and being escorted, under arrest, out of the bus station by Jackson police. A WKY reporter explains why integration had not been adopted in Mississippi. The documentary also includes interviews that reflect the attitudes held by different groups in regards to the issue of integrating Mississippi. William Simmons, the secretary of the White Citizens' Council, explains why he believes segregation should continue in Mississippi and responds to the reporter's questions concerning his views on equality. Medgar Evers, an African-American civil rights activist and field secretary for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), explains why he thinks Mississippi citizens were less aggressive than those in Alabama, as well as the lack of leadership in Jackson's black community. Charles Oldham, the national chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), explains the purpose and goals of the freedom rides and how he believes the freedom rides will lead to changes in policies and attitudes that support integration. The reporter discusses Mississippi's resistance to change traditional institutions such as segregation and white supremacy. Mississippi's governor, Ross Barnett, speaks before an audience about how the behavior of Mississippi's white citizens during the bus's stop in Jackson. Men and women are stopped on the street by the reporter and share their opinions about integration and/or the Freedom Rides. The night of the freedom riders' trials, Jackson's black leaders hold a meeting. Footage of three men speaking to the 126 people who attended the meeting. Governor Barnett responds to questions about how long the state planned to finance the fight against integration. The documentary concludes with Oldham, Evers, and Simmons briefly explaining why they believe integration will or will not occur.
