TOOMPEA Hill in Tallinn | Šnelli Park
Toompea is a limestone hill in the central part of the city of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The hill is an oblong tableland, which measures about 400 by 250 metres, has an area of 7 hectares and is about 20–30 metres higher than the surrounding areas. In folklore the hill is known as the tumulus mound over the grave of Kalev, erected in his memory by his grieving wife.
The history of Toompea is closely linked to the history of rulers and power in Estonia. Today Toompea is the center of the Government of Estonia and the Riigikogu (parliament), both of which are often simply referred to as Toompea. The location of the Riigikogu is the Toompea Castle, situated in the southwestern corner of the hill and topped by the Tall Hermann tower. The flag on the top of the tower is one of the best-known symbols in Estonia of the government in force. Ever since the German Knights of the Sword first built a stone fortress here in 1227-29, every foreign empire that ruled Estonia used the castle as its base. The castle has been revamped countless times through the centuries, but still retains the basic shape it was given in the 13th and 14th centuries. From its front, visitors can see a pink, Baroque palace dating to the time of Catherine the Great. A look at its opposite side, visible from the base of the hill, gives a much more medieval perspective.
Toompea is part of the Tallinn Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

MONET2KLIMT Art in Motion, Visual Exhibition in Tallinn |
The exhibition “FROM MONET TO KLIMT” consists of over 130 carefully chosen main works of Oscar-Claude Monet, Vincent Willem van Gogh and Gustav Klimt, shown in chronological order, putting an era of art history under the same roof. Those three geniuses, each on their own way, were pioneers in making postulates and direction of change from ‘classical’ into ‘modern’ art. Their vision and talent followed by controversy and non-acceptance of society at that time are our inspiration of believing that art is a free spirit land of imagination and through this digital seeing each of us will be having unique opportunity to:
• See the patterns and canvas layers of the impressionism of Claude Monet
• Feel the Van Gogh’s post-impressionism colors and vision of art
• Understand the controversial Art Nouveau and symbolism of Klimt

Fiddling ~ Käsmu Estonia Maritime Museum~Hillar Bergman
Käsmu is a small village on the North Estonian coast.
I travelled to Käsmu from Tallinn in August of 1995 with an Estonian television crew to provide a little ambient music for a program they were filming about the maritime museum there. This clip is an excerpt from the beginning of that finished program. It aired on the popular Estonian television show 19 minutes which is similar in theme to 60 minutes in the USA.
They left the choice of music up to me, so I started off in the pavillion with a slow version of Whiskey Before Breakfast. Next, there was a tour of the museum and an interview with the museum's director. I played fiddle in the background almost continuously for 19 minutes. It was a challenging experience picking appropriate tunes on the spur of the moment. I speak and understand just a very little Estonian. The camera man spoke English and was a good interpreter. Lots of fun!
This clip is from a VHS tape. It went through a lot of conversions (PAL to NTSC and now to digital).
Here is a translation of the dialogue on this clip:
Tere õhtust, head inimesed televiisori ees! See koht on Käsmu.
Good evening, nice people on front of TV! This place is Käsmu.
Mängib Hillar Bergman, mees Michigani osariigist, Ameerikast.
Plays Hillar Bergman , man from Michigan State, America.
Nimepoolest Eestlane. Eesti keelt räägib sõnastiku abil
According to his name, he is Estonian. Speaks Estonian with the help of dictionary
ja on siin, Käsmu mererannas praegu, meremuuseumis,
and is here, on the shores of Käsmu, in the Maritime Museum
which has been coverted from an old, the time of the Tsars and The time of the Soviets
ja praeguse Eesti Vabariigi aegse piirivalve kordonisse
and present time Independent Estonias border guard building
ja siit avaneb saja kaheksakümne kraadiline vaade meie Käsmu lahele,
and from here opens a 180 degree view to our Finnish Gulf at Käsmu,
In the background somehere is Võsu. And across the big gulf is Finland.
Käsmu is such a poor place where people could do nothing (to survive!), but had
hakkama piiritust smuggeldama ja üle laheviies sinna ja käima Soomes,
to start smuggling Alcohol (Moonshine!) and take it across the bay to Finland,
So, the THE BRIDGE TO FINLAND was built by Estonians approximately some 200 years ago!
Kohtuotsa & Patkuli City Viewing Platforms and Old Town Hall Observation Tower in Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, Estonia is a compact, scenic and and beautiful medieval town - luckily, it has many viewing platforms and observation decks, of which the entire city lays out in front of you! The first portion of this compilation of videos is from two scenic overlooks in the Old Town/Toompea Hill area; these afford amazing views and are free to get to, very little walking uphill required - just be prepared for the crowds!
Afterward, from high up is the Old Town Hall Observation Deck, way up in the white steeple in the historic Old Town Square - fantastic views abound, all over the city and particularly of the square itself.
These views are quite stunning - see them for yourself if possible, but if not soon enough, enjoy this video in the meantime!

Bordeaux museum devoted to wine
(8 Oct 2016) LEAD IN
A newly opened wine museum in Bordeax is quickly becoming a must-see destination for tourists from all over the world.
Cite du Vin pays homage to the region's famous wine heritage using a visual, multi-media approach.
STORY-LINE
The Bordeaux region in Southwestern France is home to some of the most famous wines in the world, thanks to the diversity and quality of the area's soil.
Now a new museum in the city of Bordeaux has been opened to celebrate wine worldwide, exploring its history, culture and geography.
Transcending the borders of France, Cite' du Vin (City of Wine) takes visitors on a journey around the world and through the centuries.
Housed in a 10-storey building it's a jewel of contemporary architecture. Its shape is inspired by the flowing movement of wine as it descends from the bottle to the glass.
The grey and gold coloured structure boasts a 360 degree view of Bordeaux and the Garonne river. The museum, owned by the city of Bordeaux, is quickly becoming a local landmark.
Inside, the Cite' du Vin offers visitors a multi-faceted journey over a 3,000 square metre space.
Key to the tour is a digital audiovisual guide, in eight languages, that allows visitors to explore different themes as they walk through the halls.
Sylvie Cazes is the President of the Fondation Pour la Culture et les Civilizations du Vin (Foundation for the Culture and Civilisations of Wine), which is the organisation that runs the Cite' du Vin.
Cazes says Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the perfect position for the museum:
Bordeaux needed to have this museum because it's the biggest appellation wine region in France. It's an historic vineyard throughout several millenniums. So it was very important that in the heart of Bordeaux there was this wine museum tracing the wine history, the wine culture, not only of Bordeaux wine but of all the civilisations.
Cazes started working on the wine museum, together with the mayor of Bordeaux Alain Juppe', when the idea was first launched in 2008.
Over the next six years almost one hundred specialists have been involved in the project. They include a scientific committee of geographers, historians and oenologists who worked closely with a scenographer to give the project its distinguished shape.
The museum is divided into themes. Some, like The Buffet of 5 Senses, engage visitors' sensorial world, taking tourists on a journey through the different smells of wine.
Others, like The Terroir Table, offer a tour around the globe, exploring how different soils are responsible for the wide variety of wines that we know.
At The Metamorphosis of Wine one can track the drink's creation from harvesting to fermentation to bottling. Meanwhile at All Aboard museum-goers are treated to an animated movie tracing the history of wine travel, showing how barrels were transported by boat from one country to another. The movie's viewing area is itself shaped like a boat.
Everything I see is fantastic, including the audiovisual presentation. I like it a lot. And the sensorial areas are the most fascinating for me, says Pepe Schib, a visitor from Italy.
It's very nice because when I heard about the news (of the museum) I was wondering about what kind of pattern should be the museum (sic). But actually when I come here I think it's very exciting. They're using technical methods to let us know what a wine is and they let us know all the wineries, says Olivia Wang, visitor from China.
Cazes says the success of the museum shows wine is as popular as ever.
The Cite' du Vin tour ends with the inevitable: a bar on the top floor, where visitors can sample wines as well as enjoy a bird-eye view of the city and the Garonne river.

Catherine Palace Pushkin St Petersburg Russia Gorgeous Day!
Now, one of the highlilghts of our St Petersburg trip, the Catherine Palace at Pushkin. This was the summer palace of the Russian Tsars. This place was almost destroyed (80%) during World War II, before the Germans retreated after the seige of Leningrad, now called St Petersburg, (yes the Germans controlled this part), they burnt the Palace. Restoring it has taken decades, with work still ongoing. Description of the Palace from Wiki:
The residence originated in 1717, when Catherine I of Russia hired German architect Johann-Friedrich Braunstein to construct a summer palace for her pleasure. In 1733, Empress Elizabeth commissioned Mikhail Zemtsov and Andrei Kvasov to expand the Catherine Palace. Empress Elizabeth, however, found her mother's residence outdated and incommodious and in May 1752 asked her court architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli to demolish the old structure and replace it with a much grander edifice in a flamboyant Rococo style. Construction lasted for four years, and on 30 July 1756 the architect presented the brand-new 325-meter-long palace to the Empress, her dazed courtiers, and stupefied foreign ambassadors.[citation needed]
More than 100 kilograms of gold were used to gild the sophisticated stucco façade and numerous statues erected on the roof. It was even rumoured that the palace's roof was constructed entirely of gold. In front of the palace a great formal garden was laid out. It centres on the azure-and-white Hermitage Pavilion near the lake, designed by Mikhail Zemtsov in 1744, remodelled by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1749 and formerly crowned by a grand-gilded sculpture representing The Rape of Persephone. The interior of the pavilion featured dining tables with dumbwaiter mechanisms. The grand entrance to the palace is flanked by two massive circumferences, also in the Rococo style. A delicate cast-iron grille separates the complex from the town of Tsarskoe Selo.

THE BIGGEST SIMULTANEOUS GO GAME IN EUROPE WAS PLAYED IN ST. PETERSBURG
This day simultaneous Go game took place: 27 strongest Go players from all over country fought with 191 competitors. The match became the largest Go game in Russian Go history and was registered by the expert from the Russian book of records.
Simultaneous Go game last for 2 hours, 252 participants played Go during this time. 41 games were finished not in favor of Russian Go professionals, so almost each sixth player has beat the seansery. The lucky players were rewarded with additional prizes.
There were very different players by tables that day: well-known professionals and new players, who have played their first Go match offline not online, the citizens and guests from different cities of Russia – Chelyabinsk, Petrozavodsk, Vladivostok, adult and young Go fans. There were also new guests – people who heard about the game for the first time – they had a chance to learn theory and practice of Go game with the Russian Go federation specialists.
Opening the event, the president of the Russian Go federation Maxim Volkov reminded that the game was organized on the threshold of the jubilee European Go Championship – 60th Polymetal European Go congress, which will be held in St. Petersburg this year, and probably will be the biggest by the number of participants. The City Administration and Consulate general of Japan in St. Petersburg has support the event, and their representatives took part in the opening ceremony as well.
The new vision of the game was introduced on the event – a large board with the big stones for playing on it – the game was very popular with the youngest Go fans, who as well were participating in the Team Championship of St. Petersburg between players before 18.
For information: The biggest simultaneous Go game in Europe was held in 1991. Haruhiko Shirae, 8 dan pro, played simultaneous Go on 102 boards in front of the Eiffel tower in Paris. The match last more than three hours, but the majority of the games still remained unfinished.

Best Soviet Story of Ronald Reagan - Estonian Prime Minister Dr Mart Laar
Called one of the founding fathers of democracy in Europe, former Estonian Prime Minister Dr. Mart Laar delivers one of the best Ronald Reagan stories from behind the Iron Curtain regarding Reagan's 1983 Evil Empire speech and life under communism.
An Interview with Mart Laar, Prime Minister of Estonia (1992-1994; 1999-2002)
Ronald Reagan and the Fall of the Wall: Reflections from Yesterday, Lessons for Today

Those stupid Americans have elected a real cowboy as a president. He's a real cowboy! He's a real man! He can push the button! He can push the button! And now he puts those weapons to the space! And they can annihilate, they can annihilate all of Moscow! And everything can go down really quickly.
....And it was the first time we really saw that they were afraid of somebody. And as all of the Soviet System or the communist system is based only on the fear is why it stayed so long.
Because they killed so many people, they tortured so many people, they sent so many people to Siberia and the result was that that everybody was afraid. And how to fight it? How this changes happen? The people had to overcome the fear, but the first of feeling to overcome the fear was seeing that those communist are afraid themselves!
And this was a great feeling, and this was, we can say, this was the start of the end of the Soviet Union.”
1. Do you recall your response to hearing president Reagan call the Soviet Union an evil empire?
2. Could you describe your feeling the moment you first heard that?
3. What was life like under a communist regime?
4. Did you live in fear?
5. In 1987 when he asked Gorbachev to tear down the wall, do you recall your reaction? Where were you at the time you heard this speech?
6. What is your view of Russia's progress for democracy? And related to that, how do you feel about the effectiveness of the current leadership?
7. Would you agree with this concern [of the lack of attention the US is paying to the NATO alliance] or is this fear overplayed?
8. So how has President Reagan influenced your leadership style?
9. You are a founding member of the foundation for the investigation of communist crimes; can you summarize the extensive communists criminal activities in the last eighty years?
Do you think the world underestimates the damage perpetrated by those communist regimes?
10. ..we must all hang together or assuredly we will all hang separately. Do you believe this idea applies to the republics in Europe today? And if so, what is necessary for this to occur?
11. What do you think is the biggest threat to democracy today?

Athens (Greek: Αθήνα, Athína), is the capital city of Greece with a metropolitan population of 3.7 million inhabitants. It is in many ways the birthplace of Classical Greece, and therefore of Western civilization. The design of the city is marked by Ottoman, Byzantine and Roman civilizations.
The Acropolis, a Unesco World Heritage Site, was the ancient fortified town of Athens, dating back to the Late Bronze Age, and the site of the best buildings of the Greek Classical age: the Parthenon, the Erectheion, the Temple of Athena Nike. Acropolis dominates the Athenian sky and symbolizes the foundation of modern culture and civilization.

Six Nissan LEAF to compete in the university challenge
Electric Marathon to run until 29th September going through ten countries
PARIS, France (24th September, 2018) – Nissan is partnering with the Electric Marathon by providing a 100% electric Nissan LEAF to each of the six university teams rallying from Tallinn, Estonia, to Monte Carlo. In the 2018 edition, the Nissan LEAF is the only mass market electric vehicle to compete in its own category.
The format of the marathon has changed compared to the last few years. “This year, competitions are held in two categories – between universities from six different countries which all use identical new Nissan LEAF 40 kWh, and in the so-called “open” class with an unlimited number of different types of electric vehicles. All EV drivers are welcome to participate,” said Jüri Tamm, Honorary Consul of the Principality of Monaco and head of the organizing committee.
“It is possible to participate in the entire marathon or in each stage separately and the winners will be awarded with diplomas and medals. The purpose of the marathon is to support environment-friendly transport. The celebratory finish and award ceremony will be held at the square in front of the Prince’s Palace in Monaco on 29 September.”
The Electric Marathon 2018 started on 18th of September in Tallinn, Estonia, after a prologue in Helsinki, Finland on the 17th.The Electric Marathon will pass through ten countries with stops in 37 cities, and will end on 29th September in Monaco. For the first time, it will follow the route of the Tallinn-Monte Carlo Rally held in the 1930s.
The Electric Marathon 2018, patronized by Prince Albert II of Monaco, kicked off in Tallinn in front of the Estonian National Opera on Tuesday 18th September. The program paid tribute to the historic rally from the 30s and all Estonian electric car owners were welcome to participate at the Tallinn-Pärnu stage. Around 40 electric vehicles lined up at the starting line-up.
Gareth Dunsmore, Electric Vehicle Director, Nissan Europe, says: “The new LEAF is our icon of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, and an important step towards Nissan’s vision to deliver sustainable mobility for all. Seeing our 100% electric Nissan LEAF starting such a marathon is a true testament of how versatile this car can be“.
New additions to the competition include the prologue in Helsinki and the stage in Kaliningrad, and the interim finish of our competition also has an important role in the program of the Hamburg Climate Week. “We are planning to make interim finishes by the European Court of Auditors in Luxembourg and visit various universities in Poland and France. In cooperation with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic Orchestra and the 25th anniversary festival of the Usedom Music Festival, a culture-friendly interim finish of the electric marathon rally will be held in Peenemünde in front of the Historical Technical Museum,” said Tamm.
