Stories of America and the Sea, restored vessels, figureheads, ship carvings and vintage photography; one of the world’s only preservation shipyards, where skilled craftspeople employ 19th-century tools and techniques to preserve Mystic Seaport’s unequalled collection of historic wooden ships and boats – as well as build authentic recreations of famous vessels, such as the Amistad, historic tall ships and boats such as the Charles W. Morgan, the world’s last surviving wooden whaleship.
The Joseph Conrad, a full-rigged 1882 training ship and the L.A. Dunton, the last-surviving example of early 20th-century New England fishing vessels; a state-of-the-art Collections Research Center housing more than two million examples of maritime art, artifacts, tools, buildings, imprints and other documents, including photographs, 1,000 ships registers, 600 audio taped oral history interviews, 200 videotaped interviews and 1.5 million feet of historic and contemporary maritime-related footage; the world’s largest collections of boat and maritime photography, including more than 500 different vessels and more than one million historic maritime images; unique educational programs for everyone from preschoolers to graduate students, including overnight programs aboard the Joseph Conrad, courses in 19th-century trades, sail training, undergraduate Maritime Studies programs and fellowships.
A Children’s Museum, offering kids seven and under a chance to experience the life of a sailor, including swabbing the deck, moving cargo, cooking in the galley, dressing in sailors’ garb and lying in sailors’ bunks.
The Planetarium gives visitors a lesson in celestial navigation using the stars, planets and heavenly bodies of the season.

Mystic Seaport or Mystic Seaport: The Museum of America and the Sea in Mystic, Connecticut is the largest maritime museum in the United States.[1] It is notable for its collection of sailing ships and boats and for the re-creation of the crafts and fabric of an entire 19th-century seafaring village. This May, volunteers from 27 states and 3 countries gathered at Mystic Seaport to prove that indeed, Tourism Cares!
This charitable organization not only gathers volunteer workers, but funds in the form of grants to support our nation's tourism industry. Each year Tourism Cares volunteers take a day out of their lives to help paint, landscape, and provide countless other jobs that a decided tourist spot is in need of some aid.
This year, volunteers descended upon the town of Mystic with warm hearts and helping hands to show that Tourism Cares for Mystic Seaport.

Amistad - The Spirit of Connecticut
Amistad to Mark 10 Year Anniversary!
March 25 marks the 10th Anniversary of Amistad's Launching at Mystic Seaport.
Amistad was launched from Mystic Seaport in March 2000 after more than two years of construction in the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard. Since that time she has had tens of thousands of visitors walk her decks learning the story of the Amistad her role in the struggle for human rights. She has sailed the East Coast, Gulf Coast and Great Lakes. In 2007-2008 she sailed the Atlantic Freedom Tour including ports in the UK, Portugal and most meaningfully Sierra Leone, West Africa, home of the original Amistad captives. This winter she is sailing a Caribbean Freedom Tour visiting a number of Island Nations with histories connected to the Africa Diaspora. Stay tuned for information about upcoming events to mark her 10 year anniversary.
Since her launch on March 25, 2000, Amistad's crew has worked with international agencies and organizations in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Europe and West Africa in the recognition and commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade in the former British Empire (1807) and the United States (1808).
Amistad has been visited by thousands of school children and conducted more than 50 public ceremonies and sailing events that have raised the awareness of the history of Atlantic Slave Trade and the stories of resistance waged by black and white abolitionists.
Throughout her Atlantic Freedom Tour, Amistad worked with museums and educational outreach programs to tell the history of the trade and to highlight the significant way the legacy of that history reflects in today's social, political and cultural character. The voyage included a special two-month stay in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the original West African homeland of many of the Amistad captives. This symbolic homecoming was a profound experience as the crew, students and church organizations, non-governmental organizations and the governments of Britain, the United States and the United Nations worked together in a show of cooperation and the celebration of peace and reconciliation after the Sierra Leone civil war.

Amistad America, Inc. built a recreation of the freedom schooner Amistad at Mystic Seaport. Keel laying was on March 8, 1998, the nearest weekend day to March 9, the date the Supreme Court handed down its decision in favor of the Amistad Africans.
