Greece Travel: Mykonos Island Greece
Welcome to the most famous cosmopolitan island of Greece, a white-painted paradise in the heart of the Cyclades. According to mythology, Mykonos was formed from a giant, petrified body killed by Hercules. And did you know that the island took its name from Apollo's grandson, Mykonos?
Enjoy the atmosphere along the lively seaside and admire a fleet of fishing boats that emit colorful reflections in blue waters. This is where you will find the Kazárma building, which serves as accommodation for the soldiers of Manto Mavrogenous, a female hero from the Greek Revolution. The first floor serves as his personal residence. When you are walking, don't be surprised if you find the official Mykonos mascot, which is nothing but pelican! Petros the Pelican was discovered by a fisherman after a storm in 1954, and eventually became a companion to the local population. When he died, the sadness of losing him was so deep that a replacement was soon found. In honor of Petros, local residents have built a long tradition of pelicans that roam the waterside as an important part of everyday life. So, whatever you do, don't forget to take a picture with the famous Pelican Petros successor!
One of the most beautiful angles on the island is Alefkántra or Little Venice, an 18th-century district, dominated by luxurious mansions with colorful balconies and stylish windows. With a balcony perched above the sea, photographs of the famous Italian city come to mind. Relax in the seaside café and admire the view of an ancient windmill that stands majestically on the hillside above, with a bright blue background.
Mykonos's second traditional settlement is Áno Merá, located around the historic monastery of Panayia Tourliani (a 16th-century church with brilliant iconostasis of wood carvings). In the north, in Fteliá, lies important Neolithic settlements, and the 14th-13th-century Mycenaean tomb.

Mykonos island Cyclades Greece
Mykonos, in Greek: Μύκονος [ˈmikonos], is a Greek island, part of the Cyclades, lying between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos. The island spans an area of 85.5 km2 (33 sq mi) and rises to an elevation of 341 m (1,119 ft) at its highest point. There are 9,320 inhabitants (2001) most of whom live in the largest town, Mykonos, which lies on the west coast. The town is also known as Chora (i.e. the Town in Greek, following the common practice in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town).
Tourism is a major industry.
History
Mykonos early human inhabitants were Carians, followed by Ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Cretans and Ionians
In ancient times, Mykonos, due to its proximity to the then highly populated island of Delos (situated about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) away), became very important as a supply island and possibly as a getaway location for Delian citizens.
Mythology
In Greek mythology Mykonos was the location of the battle between Zeus and the Titans,[citation needed] and the island was named in honor of Mykons, son of Anios who was a son of Apollo and nymph named Rio.
Since the 20th century
Tourism has dominated the economy since the 1950s
So, Mykonos island is part of the Cyclades islands group in the Aegean Sea. Mykonos is, with Santorini and Crete, the most famous and popular Greek islands and attracts thousands of visitors every year. The Greek island is famous for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, its gay community, its exciting nightlife that is often compared to Ibiza, its picturesque Cycladic capital full of mykonian whitewashed houses and blue domed churches, its luxery hotels, the sightseeings and its magnificent sandy beaches. This guide of Mykonos Greece provides much information: pictures, map, villages, history, museums, architecture, excursions, weather and more such as a large range of hotels.

MYKONOS, A CYCLADES PARADISE, BEST FILM AWARD of GREEK Ministry of Culture & Tourism 2011
AWARDED BEST FILM of GREEK Ministry of Culture and Tourism 2011. Smilen Savov's ASEGA Dream documentary adventure. In Greek mythology Mykonos was the location of the battle between Zeus and the Titans, and the island was named in honor of Apollo's grandson Mykons. During these ancient times, Mykonos, due to its proximity to the then highly populated island of Delos (situated about 2 km away), became very important as a supply island and possibly as a getaway location for Delian citizens. The island was once very poor, and the people tried to survive on fishing and stock breeding on the harsh land. A major industry was also ship construction. Tourism has turned the economy over since it started in the 1950s and the locals have a double attitude towards this: it may have saved the economy but some also feel that it has taken over too much!!!!! Enjoy an unforgettable film trip to the mythical island, called Mykonos with the famous filmmaker Smilen Savov.

Mykonos Greece Travel Vlog Travelwith_jt
Mykonos has a lot of beaches and is known for its nightlife.
Mykonos Shopping is fantastic as it has its cheap everyday stuff for the usual tourists, though also has more expensive labels such as Louis Vuitton, Prada and much more.
Food is amazing, from your Gyros, Souvlaki houses, crepe stores and an amazing bakery that we found that you will see in this video. We ate at some amazing places but one definitely stood out and it was a Pasta and Pizza place, very expensive but well worth it.
We stayed in the main part of the island called Mykonos Town, the island is easy to get around with bus, car, limo, bike or even boat we found out.
Did you know that many top DJs have played sets on the island of Mykonos in recent years. It’s now an island that has two of the most popular clubs in the world because of this. It’s definitely one of the most attractive places on earth as far as music fanatics are concerned.
Mykonos’ nickname is The Island of the Winds due to the strong Meltemi winds that blow often but it may also be referred to as the Queen of the Cyclades.
Despite its small area, there are more than 600 churches and small chapels at Mykonos, most of them dating back to the Byzantine times. It is estimated that there is one church per local family! Mykonos Town alone hosts 60 of them, with Panagia Paraportiani being the most famous and most photographed one. The iconic landmark is located in the Kastro neighborhood and was built in 1475 (was eventually completed in the 17th century, though).
According to Greek mythology, the island got its name from Mykonos, its first ruler, who, many believe, was a descendant of the Greek God of Light and Music, Apollo. It is also said that Mykonos hosted the legendary fight between the Titans and the highest of the gods of Olympus, Zeus. When the father of all gods defeated the Titans, he imprisoned them under the island’s rocky terrain in a region called Houlakia or Choulakia, where they (allegedly) still remain.
Mykonos was once a popular pirate hub. In the 1900s, when pirates used to own the seas the way we all know, Mykonos was the place where pirates would gather, sing, drink, and had fun until they dropped.
Mykonos was poverty-stricken until the 1950s, when the bohemians and artists first, and then the royals and the a-lists, discovered the island. This led to the gradual transformation of Mykonos from a relatively barren island into a party mecca that caters to an upmarket clientele, with elegant, exclusive villas, elite restaurants, luxury boutiques, VIP beach bars, and more.

Kares and Phoenicians have been the first inhabitants of Mykonos, but Athens was founded by Ionians colonists, and dispossessed the control of the island around 1000 BC, with the former residents.
Mykonos history
Historical sources confirm the following in the ancient world there were two towns on the island in 490 BC, the Persian generals Datis made Artaphernes and a brief stopover in Mykonos, it was resources. In a poor island with limited agricultural ancient, pantheistic times Dionysus, Demetra, Zeus, Apollon, Poseidon and Heracles, the principle gods were worshiped here.
Later in history the island belonged to the Romans and later the Byzantines, who have fortified the island against the Arab raids in the 7th Century, retained control of it until the 12th Century.
After the fall of Constantinople, at the end of the 4th Crusade (1204), occupied the island when her Seigneur (Fortress) by Andrea and Jeremia Ghisi relatives Dandolo, the Doge of Venice. In 1292 it was pillaged and plundered by the Catalans, and later, in 1390, given by the Venetians in 1390, the last of the Ghizi Overlord. In 1537, still under Venetian rule, the island suffered a catastrophic attack by Barbarossa, the admiral of Souleiman the Magnificent.
Later, under Kapudan Pasha, head of the Ottoman fleet, the island virtually self-governing, under the system known as the period of one and a council official voivod (syndics body), which always tries to keep an equal distance from both Turks and Venetians (the last of which finally withdrew from the region, in 1718, after the fall of the castle of Tinos to the Ottomans).
The most popular of Mykonos (which has fluctuated during the current period, usually 2000-5000 people) were from colonies of immigrants (from the nearby island and as well as from Crete) during the period of famine and epidemics that followed often the times of conflict has risen by the end of the 18th Century.
The Mykonos, who were in the same period known as excellent sailors, were successful in trade and shipping, and was also not unheard of piracy. Many islanders were in the “Orloff revolt” (led by the Orloff brothers, from 1770 to 1774), which resulted in a favorable active for them and for Catherine the Great in, due to the highly profitable contracts for the trade between the Ottomans and the Russian Empire.
In the early 30′s already started a lot of famous artists, politicians and wealthy people, mainly from Europe, spending holidays on the island, attracted by its unique atmosphere. Mykonos has adapted well to the post-war situation and the gradual growth of the tourism industry in Southern Europe, the island has turned into a cosmopolitan city and is one of the most successful growth models of its kind and scale in Europe.
Greece: The Success Story of Mykonos | European Journal
On the Greek island of Mykonos, a great season is coming to an end: 60 percent more tourists, yachts and cruise ships came this summer alone. The slump in the North African tourist industry is an opportunity for crisis-plagued Greece, because Greeks are pinning their greatest hopes on tourism to get the country back on its feet. The major role model is the small island of Mykonos. The islanders have a number of tricks for attracting tourists. But in its publicity, the vacation paradise tries not to emphasize the fact that the island is a part of Greece. For more go to
