New Orleans 2020 Brewery Guide
New Orleans, once a place with year-old IPAs collecting dust, is slowly turning into the next American craft beer city in need of a local guide.
Consider, early 2015 the entire state of Louisiana was home to only 17 breweries. A small number compared to visiting any major American craft beer destination city.
Some could argue with so many breweries oversaturating the market, finding a decent craft brew on vacation or checking out the latest release can become overwhelming.
But down in the Big Easy, New Orleans brews a new drinking culture for all locals and visitors to taste.
As the locals know, and any frequent visitor may discover, a whole other world exists beyond Bourbon and Canal Streets.
Adventuring into other New Orleans neighborhoods explores diverse atmospheres, energetic vibes, local seasonal favorites and refreshing experiences at some of our newest breweries.
While everyone else has enjoyed drinking fresh IPAs since 2011, New Orleans finally decided to make a move—the 6-month window from December 2016 to May 2017 brought New Orleans 5 new breweries.
Now, several years after the American craft beer boom, more locals and tourists are diving into the craft beer scene.
Check out our recent trip to 6 local breweries:
-Parleaux Beer Lab, Bywater neighborhood
-Brieux Carre Brewing, Marigny neighborhood
-Urban South Brewing, Uptown neighborhood
-NOLA Brewing, Uptown
-Miel Brewery & Taproom, Uptown
-Port Orleans Brewing, Uptown

East Coast vs West Coast IPAs, what's the difference?
Brew Bus Shenanigans Episode 26
We spent some time in New Orleans Breweries drinking some amazing East Coast and West Coast IPAs.
Book your private Brew Bus Tour in New Orleans !
- [Narrator] East Coast, West Coast. East Coast, West Coast. What does it all mean? What's the difference between a West Coast and a East Coast IPA?
- Everything, everything is so different about those two beers. Wildly different. Water chemistry, style of hops, when the hops go in, everything.
- [Interviewer] You like West Coast or East Coast better?
- I respect both of the styles equally. And that's true.
- [Narrator] What's the difference between an East Coast and a West Coast IPA? IPAs are the number one selling category of craft beer, accounting for more than 25% of all craft beer sales.
If you've been a fan of craft beer for a while, you know about the long-debated West Coast versus East Coast IPA battle.
However, many of our customers tell us they don't even like IPAs. Then after three hours on our tour, they end up loving the new flavor they just tried.
There's a massive difference in flavor between each of them, with each head brewer offering a new, distinct perspective. So don't give up on IPAs just yet, and let's dive in and see what the folks love.
- So, what is the deal with all this haze-craze? East Coast, West Coast, what coast, East Coast or West Coast IPAs.
- East Coast, West Coast.
- All right, East Coast versus West Coast. West Coast is the old school IPA, very much a hop profile, lots of hop bitterness involved. The hops are really meant to shine. It's meant for, really just to make all those hops to burn those oils and release the bitterness.
- Yeah man, it's just, it's got everything to do with the bitterness.
- West Coast IPA, it's old school. I like the bitter hops there.
- [Interviewer] Yeah?
- Piney, piney.
- East Coast, all the way.
- East Coast, it's more balanced, the malts add more, a little bit of flavor towards sweetness. The hops actually get put in in the back half of the boil, which allows for the essential oils to really create those citrusy flavor.
- [Interviewer] We got Grant with Brieux Carre here. Grant, what is your opinion of East Coast versus West Coast IPAs?
- They both kinda have their positives. I tend to like a bit of a blend between the two.
- Feel like the East Coast, we're definitely on this trend right now that's blowing up all over the place. So crazy that you learn, it's like the spectrum of hops. So you got everything that's from like tree sap to almost like pot to coconut, pineapple, like these very tropical flavors.
- East Coast got the more juicy, no bitterness, very velvety taste.
- More hoppier.
- So we got the founder of NOLA Brew Bus right here behind me to say what his favorite West Coast or East Coast beer it is.
- This is a East Coast IPA. Trust me, it's worth the parking. Ah, I love the citrus and stuff with the pineapple.
- In my opinion, East Coast is a little more flavor. I respect both beers, but in my opinion, East Coast is the best.
- [Narrator] All right guys, thanks for tuning in to Brew Bus Shenanigans, Episode 26. Hope you learned a little bit about East Coast versus West Coast IPAs. Until next time, cheers.

Florida has been regarded by many beer lovers as a beer wasteland and in many instances, especially in Florida's modern era, that reputation has been deserved. However, there is a pedigree of brewing in the Sunshine State and the epicenter of Florida's brewing past was the city of Tampa.
The first brewery in the state of Florida was located in Tampa in present day Ybor City. The Florida Brewing Company (Later renamed the Tampa Florida Brewing Company) was founded by cigar industrialists in 1896 and survived until 1961. The La Tropical line including an ale and bock were brewery mainstays. The La Tropical line of beers were a distinct line from the La Tropical beer brewed in Cuba.
Today the building which was home to the Tampa Florida Brewing Company houses a law firm. When it was built in 1896 it was the tallest building in the city of Tampa at six stories tall. It remains the tallest building in Ybor City to this day.
The next brewery to call Tampa home was the Southern Brewing Company which opened in downtown Tampa at 700 East Zack Street in 1934 and operated until 1957. SB Beer and Silver Bar Ale were staple products. Label design for SB beer featured distinctive image of The University of Tampa prominently along with an illustration of pirates, long a part of Tampa lore. Southern also produced a Sparkling Ale and Premium Lager under the Silver Bar name as well as an SB Bock. Additional beers were Old Tampa Beer, Wurzburger Dark Beer and Florida Special Beer.
The relatively wide range of beers provides some proof that prior to WWII lager, while immensely popular, did not have the stranglehold on the market that it enjoyed from the late 60's into the late 80's. Ales were produced by many regional breweries, even in less beer savvy states such as Florida, and appear to have sold well in the marketplace.
The Desoto Brewing Company was a short lived brewery located at 1202 N Howard Avenue in what is now referred to as the NoHo District of West Tampa. Opened in 1934 the brewery had shut its doors by 1936. DeSoto Brewing produced Colonial Ale and Desoto Beer. Sadly, very little is known about the brewery and almost nothing exists in the way of labels or bottles due to the breweries short existence.
The Ybor City Brewing Company operated in Ybor City from 1994 to 2003. Five beers were brewed at the spacious brick building which housed the brewery. Ybor Gold Amber, Brown Ale, Gaspar's Porter, Calusa Wheat and Light. The brands were later purchased by the Florida Brewing Company in Melbourne, FL where they are brewed today.
Brew Bus Tour features Southern Oregon microbrews
By Molly Trotter/KTVL.COMASHLAND, Ore. -- Oregon's beer industry brings in more than 2.4 billion dollars in revenue every year.Southern Oregon is adding to that by capitalizing on the boom making breweries tourist attractions.Main Street Tours in Ashland is one of those companies by running a brew bus tour through the Rogue Valley to feather Southern Oregon brews. The magic brew bus tours is our creation of a safe fun and inspiring way to learn about microbrews here in Southern Oregon, said Kim Lewis, the Owner of Main Street Tours.Oregon is the third largest craft beer market in the United States and Lewis says the tour helps local breweries promote their craft beer while providing a safe way for people to enjoy themselves. We take people, we play some fun music along the way and we get them to where they have some samplings as well as great food to go with it, Lewis said. The brew tour takes groups of people of three to four different breweries around the Rogue Valley. One of the popular stops is Caldera Brewing in Ashland. They can check them all out they can have a good time and enjoy the food, enjoy the beer and you know it's a great way to go, said Ray Cato, the Brand Manager for Caldera Brewing.Another popular stop on the tour is Bricktowne Brewing Company in Medford. The manager there says the stop gives them a chance to get to know their guests. We get to show people some other different styles that they are not used to and some people roll through that might not otherwise have and it has definitely impacted a people to where they keep coming back, said Neil Smith, the Bar Manager for Bricktowne Brewing Company.Smith says with more people coming in, that means a higher demand on the breweries. The smiles on the faces that come into our brewery enjoying our beer makes the high demand all worth it. That's what it's all about, Smith said. For more information on setting up your own Brew Bus Tour, visit
Sampling Craft Beers in Louisiana - Our Own Little Beer Trail
Hello Hoppers! While in Louisiana we visited a few of the many craft beer breweries found in the state. The craft beers produced in these breweries are a product of many years of testing different recipes to get it just right. There are so many brewing companies and a multitude of different types of beers, for every taste imaginable. I list these breweries at the end of this video.
I want to especially thank John and Cathy for telling us about this activity and for taking us around. I'm not big on beer but I found this activity to be quite educational and enjoyable.

New Orleans (, locally ; French: La Nouvelle-Orléans [la nuvɛlɔʁleɑ̃] (listen)) is a consolidated city-parish located along the Mississippi River in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Louisiana. With an estimated population of 391,006 in 2018, it is the most populous city in Louisiana. A major port, New Orleans is considered an economic and commercial hub for the broader Gulf Coast region of the United States.
New Orleans is world-renowned for its distinct music, Creole cuisine, unique dialect, and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The historic heart of the city is the French Quarter, known for its French and Spanish Creole architecture and vibrant nightlife along Bourbon Street. The city has been described as the most unique in the United States, owing in large part to its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. Founded in 1718 by French colonists, New Orleans was once the territorial capital of French Louisiana before being traded to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. New Orleans in 1840 was the third-most populous city in the United States, and it was the largest city in the American South from the Antebellum era until after World War II. The city's location and flat elevation have historically made it very vulnerable to flooding. State and federal authorities have installed a complex system of levees and drainage pumps in an effort to protect the city.New Orleans was severely affected by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, which resulted in flooding more than 80% of the city, thousands of deaths, and so much displacement because of damaged communities and lost housing as to cause a population decline of over 50%. Since Katrina, major redevelopment efforts ...
