This film was produced through the Women and Folktales Project, a joint initiative of the Luang Prabang Film Festival (lpfilmfest.org) and the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (taeclaos.org), funded by the Small Grants Program of the US Embassy in Vientiane.
Women are important storytellers and bearers of cultural heritage in Laos. However, their voices are rarely heard outside their communities, and traditional folktales and legends are in danger of dying out. This project was conceived to empower ethnic minority women in Laos by documenting, disseminating, and celebrating their traditional stories using film.
This is a traditional Hmong folktale, told by Vah Lao in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. January 2015.

After riding five hours in a van from Luang Prabang through gorgeous mountains, I finally arrived in Vang Vieng. The next morning, a group of people I met at my hostel and I rented bikes and explored the surrounding area. We first went to the Blue Lagoon, which had sounded like a magical nature wonder of the region. In reality, it was a recreational park of sorts, where local families and tourists came to have picnics and splash around in pools of questionable, smelly water. Included in the entrance fee is Tham Phu Cave, which made the whole visit worth it! This cave was massive and so beautifully lit from the outside. As we ventured deeper, we visited a small, peaceful shrine to the Buddha and a tunnel covered in muddy handprints from previous visitors of the cave.
The rest of the afternoon was pretty chill. We had lunch at this nonprofit center, Sae Lao Volunteering Project, which provides education, employment, and sustainable development to the local community. Then we found another cave that seemed closed to visitors. We decided to sneak in and found many amazing geological formations and critters.

Lao NEWS on LNTV: The gov plans to use real gold to restore the top spire of Pha That Luang.3/3/2016
VO The government plans to use real gold to restore the top spire of Pha That Luang or “Great Stupa”
INTRO: The government plans to use real gold to restore the top spire of Pha That Luang or “Great Stupa” to its traditional glory in readiness for its 450th anniversary.
STORY: That Luang was originally constructed in 1566 during the reign of King Setthathirath, King of the Lane Xang Kingdom, and gold was initially used in its decorations but this had disappeared from the stupa over the years.
An official said, in recent times gold coloured paint had been used on the spire's surface but for the special celebration this year the government wants to use real gold in keeping with tradition. Adding that, the plan is to have the restoration complete before the That Luang Festival in November. We hope to collect 10kg of gold through donations from individuals and businesses.”
It is highlighted that, That Luang's restoration and its 450th anniversary are important because of the stupa's significance in Lao history and it has become a place to visit and learn about the nation's culture. That Luang is also the most important Buddhist monument in Laos.
Official said, Archaeological experts from the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Museum and Archaeology, under the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, would conduct a study this month to ascertain the actual budget needed for the restoration project
That Luang was built in 1566 after King Setthathirath had made Vientiane the new capital of the Lane Xang Kingdom. The large grounds surrounding the golden stupa contain several other Buddhist structures. In front of the stupa stands a statue of King Setthathirath, in memory of his contribution to the creation of the Lane Xang Kingdom.
At that time the pagoda was covered in gold leaf. In 1827 most of the city of Vientiane was destroyed and looted by Siamese invaders.
That Luang was heavily damaged and eventually left abandoned. It was rebuilt in the 1930s by the French to its original design.

Sikkim, Traditional Handloom Weaving Class in Action
Students at the Sikkim Department of Handloom and Handicrafts institute learn the traditional skills in handloom weaving. The necessary articles for weaving consist of yarns, spindle, spinning machine, warp drum or pegs and a loom. Ancient customs and traditions in Sikkim keep alive decades-old styles and forms of craftsmanship, including the crafts of handloom weaving. Traditionally the three prominent ethnic tribal communities of Lepchas, Sherpas and Bhutias have been the main practitioners. Because Sikkim is very cold for much of the year handlooms have been used to weave woollen garments and blankets. The Department of Handloom and Handicrafts now teaches skills in cotton handloom weaving, still using traditional designs.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
