Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is a Tibet museum in Gangtok, Sikkim, India.The foundation stone of the Institute was laid by the 14th Dalai Lama on 10 February 1957 and it was opened officially by thePrime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 1 October 1958.The institute employs researchers and one of its new research programs is a project which seeks to document the social history of Sikkim's approximated 60 monasteries and record this on a computer. Another project seeks to digitize and document old and rare photographs of Sikkim for knowledge distribution.Khempo Dhazar served as head of the Sheda, a Nyingma college attatched to the Institute, for six years. Since its establishment in 1958, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology has sponsored and promoted research on the religion, history, language, art and culture of the people of the Tibetan cultural area which includes Sikkim. The NIT library holds one of the largest collections of Tibetan works in the world outside Tibet and a museum of Tibetan iconography and religious art. It has published the Bulletin of Tibetology since 1964 and numerous books over the years.
It is one of the most important and famous institutes in the world that does research in the areas of Tibetan language and culture. It also has in its premises a museum, a Tibetan library with rich collections and also a reference center about Tibet and Himalayas in general. Located in Deorali and less than 2 kilometers from the main town of Gangtok, the institute is perched in a small forest of birch trees, oak and magnolia ... a wonderful serene ambience.
The main building is built on Tibetan architecture and remains as one of the finest traditional Tibetan designs in the world. The foundation stone of the Institute was laid by 14th Dalai Lama in February 1957. It was inaugurated by Late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in October 1958. The museum is located in the ground floor and has many rare collections of statues, coins, thangkas (that are scrolls with hand paintings & embroidery work), Tibetan art work & objects, and ancient manuscripts in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese and Lepcha. However the most prominent of all is the grand and majestic image of Manjushri (bodhisattva of knowledge and wisdom) which was brought all the way from Tibet.

The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, In 1958 core building feels like a Tibetan fantasy palace, with corner towers, colourful mural frontage and a forest-glade setting. The main hall houses a priceless and well-explained collection of culturally Tibetan/Buddhist iconography and artefacts, ranging from thangkas (cloth paintings), coins and amulets to tantric skull-cap bowls and trumpets made from human thigh bones. Beautiful Buddhist statuary includes an eight-armed bronze image of victory goddess Namgyalama, who appears to be texting on an invisible phone.
Few tourists venture upstairs to the shrine-like library, whose teak-and-glass cases house mostly wrapped religious scriptures along with the 135-volume Encyclopaedia Tibetica. The rooftop has pleasant views.

The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology contains a rare collection of statues, ritual objects, traditional art objects, thangkas and ancient manuscripts, including Manjushri and Demchog / Chakrasamvara statues. A few minutes walk is the Do Drul Chorten Monastery built by Trulshik Rinpoche in 1945
Visiting Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (Gangtok)
The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is located on syari road about half km from Deorali road. (Address: Syari road, MP golai, Tadang, gangtok). You can find this on the way while going to Chorten monastry (Do Drul Monastery). The tibetology campus opens from 10 AM to 4 PM. You have to pay an entry fee of Rs 10/-. However we had to wait for long as the gate opened at about 10.40. There is a beautiful statue of Guru Padmasambhava in the campus near the entrance. There is a museum inside the campus. The museum contains varous artifacts on Lord Buddha and Buddhism. Each artifact is described with its Tibetan name and Sanskrit equivalent name which is very useful for the researchers. For general tourists, unless you have special interest on historical artifacts, the place can be visited within half an hour.

Hello YouTube, this is in continuation from our previous vlog (episode three)
Gangtok trip episode three :
In Day Two of our short Gangtok trip, we planned to visit the Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake but sadly due to heavy snowfall, we didn't get the permits. After that we planned to visit few less know places in and around Gangtok. In this video, we covered Namgyal Institute of Tibetology & The famous Gangtok Ropeway. The experience was awesome.
