Japan Travel: Things to Do, Explore and Experience in Wakayama Prefecture 29
Wakayama Prefecture is located to the south of Osaka. The capital of the prefecture is Wakayama City.
Wakayama Prefecture has many places for visitors to enjoy and explore. The best known tourist attraction is Mount Koya (Koyasan), the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism. Visitors who wish to experience an overnight stay at a temple can experience one here.
In addition to the overnight stay at the temple, visitors approach Koyasan to explore the Kumano Kodo, an ancient network of trials used by pilgrims to visit temples. The Kumano Sanzan, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha and the Kumano Nachi Taisha are also well visited in this area.
In addition to these spiritual experiences, visitors also come to Wakayama to enjoy the hot springs this region boasts. The Shirahama area is one of the top three onsen (hot springs) resort areas in Japan. Numerous onsen, including one of the oldest onsen in Japan, Saki-no-Yu, is in this area. Shirahama is also famous for its white sandy beach and famous rock formations, including Engetsu Island.
Children will be delighted to visit Adventure World with all its animals and rides. This park is famous for their twin pandas, and visitors will enjoy learning more about our Chinese animal friends here. In addition to the cuddly pandas, visitors can enjoy an African Safari, dolphin and other sea life show. There is a “feel” interaction area as well.
Wakayama Prefecture is blessed with nature, history, spirituality, and fun for all.

Wakayama, Japan: Day 1
You've probably never heard of Wakayama Prefecture in Japan. However, it's one of the bigger prefectures on Honshu, the main island. Wakayama is known for its many traditional castles, temples, shrines and onsen (hot springs). The coastal cities' beaches are a huge tourist attraction, and Wakayama City boasts a prestigious university and home to many company jobs.
My grandfather was born and raised in Susami, Wakayama. In 1961, when he was only 19 years old, he left Japan for the U.S. He came to Los Angeles, started a family and never looked back. He did not keep in contact with his brothers he left behind, and the only time he returned was in 1990, nearly 30 years later, when his mother became ill.
I never knew my family from Wakayama. I don't know who or where they are.I always felt like that part of my heritage was missing. So when I was offered a trip by the Wakayama International Exchange Association (WIXAS), I immediately accepted. I hope to not only learn more about my Japanese heritage, but also the life my grandfather left behind more than 50 years ago.

JR kiitanabe Train Station, Wakayama Prefecture
JR Kiitanabe Train Station is a sleepy little train station on the JR Kinokuni line that goes from Wakayama City to Shingu in the Kii Peninsula of Wakayama Prefecture.
Kiitanabe is famous for the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, which is one of the three sacred shrines of the Kumano Sanzen of the Kumano Kodo (Kumano Ancient Road, which is a old pilgrimage route from Kumano to Kyoto). Kumano Kodo is recognized as by the UNESCO World Heritage site. Also, a good stretch of the old Kumano Kodo still exists from Kiitanabe towards Wakayama City. Unfortunately the Shrine is about two hour bus ride, so if you are planning to visit the shrine, please get there early.
Enjoy!!

The Exciting Journey - Kansai Tourism
On March 20, the Kansai Tourism Bureau published a video produced and directed by Eikawa Yuki about the charisma of Kansai Prefecture.
Kansai is a major hub of Japanese history and home to Nara and Kyoto, former political capitals that have maintained their national cultural influence. Its largest city, Osaka, is home to some of the most delicious food in Japan, attracting 11 million inbound tourists in 2018. And, Kansai International Airport is quickly becoming a destination to rival Tokyo.
Yet, as the Kansai Tourism Bureau readily tells us, there is much more to the region than just Kyoto and Osaka. “We would like people to experience the charm of areas which are not as well known, and enjoy fully the experience of Kansai.”
To this end, the tourism bureau has collaborated with Eikawa Yuki, award-winning short-film director and producer from Nagasaki Prefecture, to help the region renew its outreach to an international audience.
Eikawa has won numerous awards for his jaw-dropping use of 4K, 8K, timelapse, and drone films about travel and the environment. In particular, he won the Yahoo! JAPAN Internet Creative Prize in 2011, was a finalist in the Visual Tourism Award in 2015 and 2017, and was the winner of Japan World’s Tourism Film Festival in 2018.

The CEO agreed to move the cat's house into the station but as they were to live on company property they would need to become company employees. (On a visit to the station) he took one look at Tama and was instantly taken with her. He decided there and then that she should become the new station master. Japan Travel: Scenic Spots filled with Spiritual Sites in Kumano, Wakayama 13
Japan Travel: Scenic Spots filled with Spiritual Sites in Kumano, Wakayama 13
The Kumano area (熊野), well known for its religious history, is located around the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula which is about 100 kilometers south of Osaka. The area spans Wakayama and Mie Prefectures; however, most of the religious sites and points of interests are located in Wakayama Prefecture.
The Kumano Sanzan: Hongu Taisha, Nachi Taisha and Hayatama Taisha, are the center of this area. Pilgrims have traveled to the Kumano Sanzan utilizing traditional pilgrim trails, called Kumano Kodo, for over 1000 years. Though parts of the trail are dangerous, it is believed approaching the shrines by these old-fashioned routes is important in the religious process. Furthermore, in 2004, the Kumano Kodo was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With the title of The Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, the designation also includes neighboring Koyasan, Yoshino and Ominesan.
This region is blessed with religious and historical value from the three shrines. The Shinto Sun Goddess' great grandson, Jimmu, came to Kumano to unify the country as Japan's first Emperor. In addition, Kumano is referred to The Land of the Dead, as it is believed Shinto spirits and family ancestors dwell here after they pass away.
Towns and cities dot the Kii Peninsula’s coastline, combining Kumano's ancient history with present day life. Towns such as Shirahama or Katsura offer its visitors relaxing hot springs bath. Others, such as Kumano City or Kushimoto feature beautiful coastal scenery for their visitors to experience.
