A Visit to Plymouth, MA/Interview with Plymouth County Register John Buckley
PART 1:
Owner Hugh Fitzpatrick and reporter Michelle Greene pay a visit to historic Plymouth, Massachusetts landmarks such as Plymouth Rock, the replica of the Mayflower, and Plimouth Plantation.
PART 2:
Hugh Fitzpatrick interviews John Buckley, Plymouth County Register of Deeds. The deeds at this particular registry go back as far as the 1620's. Land transactions go back as far the early colonists. Around 1627, the governor switched over to private property rights, which allows for a more productive society. This is when the recording of land records began.
The first colonial document laid out the land around the area where the Mayflower had landed, and those ownership locations are still marked by plaques today along that road.
The Plymouth Colony records have many of the original Pilgrims' names. People come from all around the world to do genealogical research to look up their ancestors. The placard above the entrance to the registry reads America's First Registry of Deeds, which has never been disputed.

Frederick Douglass in Ireland: 'The Black O’Connell' ” with Dr. Christine Kinealy
Part of the Hadwen House Fireside Chats Lecture Series, the Nantucket Historical Association welcomes Dr. Christine Kinealy, August 21, 2018.
This lecture explores the time Douglass spent in Ireland in 1845-1846 and the impact that the country had on his personal and political development. A highlight of his stay was meeting his hero, the Irish nationalist and abolitionist, Daniel O’Connell. It was while speaking in front of O’Connell that Douglass made an impassioned plea for his enslaved people to find their own “Black O’Connell.” Throughout his life, Douglass would playfully refer to himself in this way.
Christine Kinealy is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, where she completed her doctorate on the introduction of the Poor Law to Ireland. She then worked in educational and research institutes in Dublin, Belfast and Liverpool.
She has published extensively on the impact of the Great Irish Famine and has lectured on the relationship between poverty and famine in India, Spain, Canada, France, Finland and New Zealand. She also has spoken to invited audiences in the British Parliament and in the U.S. Congress.
Based in the United States since 2007, she was named one of the most influential Irish Americans in 2011 by Irish America Magazine. In 2013, she received the Holyoke, Mass. St. Patrick's Day Parade's Ambassador Award. In March 2014, she was inducted into the Irish America Hall of Fame.

Leyden Street (1620): The Oldest Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA...built by the Pilgrims
This is a clip of the oldest street in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The street was named Leyden Street in honor of the city in the Netherlands that offered refuge to the Pilgrims while they were persecuted in England. Leyden Street may be the oldest street in one of the original thirteen colonies laid out by colonists and in continuous use since 1620. The Pilgrims built their houses and fort along the street. The First Thanksgiving was likely held nearby in 1620. Plymouth Rock is near the water end of the street and is the alleged point of arrival from the Mayflower.
The clip also shows First Parish Church in Plymouth, MA. Founded by the Piligrims, it is currently a Unitarian Universalist congregation and located near the site of the first fort and cemetery on Burial Hill. It is the oldest church congregation in New England, and the oldest continuous congregation in the United States.
