Day Trip To Nara - Naramachi Townhouse, Nakatanidou Mochi Pounding, Bowing Deers Vlog
Nara Park/Naramachi Townhouse/Mochi Pounding at Nakatanidou/
Making a day trip to Nara was one of the best decisions we made on this trip. We got to ride rental bikes throughout the city, explore the traditional Naramachi Townhome (free activity btw!), feed and bow to the Nara Park deers, and eat the super delicious mochi from the famous restaurant Nakatanidou. We loved this little city (& even their aggressive bowing deers) so much & we can't wait to go back.

Naramachi , literally Nara Town is the former merchant district of Nara, where several traditional residential buildings and warehouses have been preserved. The municipal government of Nara has been taking measures to foster this historical heritage. Today, boutiques, shops, cafes, restaurants and a few museums line up along the district's narrow lanes.

Before the 15th century, the grounds of Gangoji Temple were spacious which occupied the area that is where Naramachi is today. Gangoji was one of Japan's most important temples during the Nara Period and has been designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Only a couple of buildings of the temple remain today.

The Nara National Museum is located within Nara Park, and is an art museum primarily displaying Japanese Buddhist art. The museum was founded over 100 years ago, which retains its original building. A new wing was later added, and is connected to the original building by an underground passage.
Both wings display the museum's permanent collection, focusing on Buddist arts including Buddhist statues, paintings, scrolls and ceremonial objects mainly collected from Japan. The new wing also features temporary exhibitions, including exhibitions of treasures from the Todaiji Temple annualy held in autumn. A ticket to the museum applies both wings, and English explanations are available throughout the museum.

Japan Travel: Taking a Look into the Past at Imanishike Shoin Residence in Nara 51
Naramachi (奈良町), literally meaning “Nara Town” is the former merchant district of Nara. Visitors will find several traditional residential buildings and warehouses here. There are many boutiques, shops, cafes, restaurants and a few museums along the district's narrow lanes.
Visitors will find machiya or long, narrow “townhouse” here. Machiya served as both shops as well residences of the local merchants. In the past, taxes were calculated based on the property’s street access rather than the total area, so the front of the machiya was kept narrow. Visitors are allowed to walk inside the machiya and explore as a few of the preserved machiya are now open to the public.
In the eastern part of Naramachi is Imanishike Shoin Residence, the former residence of an important Kofukuji Temple official. Visitors can view the interior, the traditional structure, as well as a beautiful garden. There is a space inside the residence for visitors to enjoy green tea and Japanese sweets.

NARA PARK, JAPAN - Looking for things to do in Japan and interesting places to visit for your Japan trip in 2017?
Nara Park is located in Nara, approximately 17 miles and 35 minutes on a JR train from Osaka. Nara is an old city with a fantastically huge park home to 1,300 wild Sika deer, which are tame, meaning you can spend a day enjoying the park and spending time with the deer, even feeding them with deer cookies! (150 Yen).
Nara Park is also home to the world's largest wooden structure, Todai-ki, which houses a 15 metre tall statue of Buddha. Also located in the park are museums and a number of shrines - an ideal location for a day out from Osaka and experience and learn about Japanese culture.
