The Narva Castle is one of the main attractions of the city. In the seventh decade of the 13th century, the Danes established a castle as a residence for the Danish King’s vice-Regent. The Narva Castle is the most diverse and best preserved defence structure in Estonia. The area of the castle is 3.2 hectares, and the highest point is the Tall Hermann Tower (51 metres). Today you can visit the museum in the castle, were the displays explain the history of Narva and the castle. There are handicraft workshops in the northern courtyard, where you can try your hand at various techniques and handicrafts.

Нарвская крепость
Нарвская крепость является одной из основных достопримечательностей города. В 70-тых годах 8. века датчане построили эту крепость для наместника Датского короля в качестве резиденции. Нарвская крепость является самым разнообразным и наилучшим образом сохранившимся оборонительным сооружением в Эстонии. Площадь крепости составляет 3,2 гектара, наивысшей точкой которой является башня Пикк Херманн (51 м). В настоящее время можно посетить находящийся в крепости музей, где выставлены история Нарвы и крепости. На северном дворе открыты ремесленные мастерские, где можно попробовать свои умения владения разными техниками и изготовление некоторых предметов собственноручно.

Hermann Narva castle

Hermann Castle (also Hermannsfeste, Herman Castle, Narva Castle, and Narva fortress) is a castle in Narva, eastern Estonia. It was founded in 1256 by the Danes and the first stone castle was built in the beginning of the 14th century. The German Livonian Teutonic knights order purchased the castle on 29 August 1346, and for most of its history the castle was German Teutonic.

Narva has the third largest population in Estonia and the largest city in the northeast region of Ida-Virumaa. About 60,000 people live here, 53,000 of them ethnic Russians – with 87% of locals speaking Russian.

The unemployment rate in the area is the highest in the country (8%), 1.5% higher than an average Estonian city. Moreover, the standard of living is somewhat lower than average in Estonia.
Parallels made with Crimea are not made for nought – in 1993, the mayor of Narva, Yury Mishin, and his political force, the Union of Russian Citizens, tried to secede from Estonia and even led a referendum that was declared illegitimate. However, Russia did not support the Narva separatists at the time.

After the pseudo-referendum, the Estonian government tightened its policy towards the Russian-speaking minority. Since then, in order to obtain Estonian citizenship, candidates have been required to pass an exam, which includes questions about the history, culture and laws of the country – they also had to demonstrate a high level of knowledge of Estonian.

Road Trip to Narva, Estonia

Decided to make a one day road trip to Narva, and make a small video of it. Unfortunately it snowed quite heavy there so I didn't film that much.
Funny thing about Narva is that more than 95% of the population there speaks Russian and yet all the signs are in Estonian. Had to order food in English because not even young people speak Estonian there.

Border Crossing - East meets West at the Narva River in Estonia

The modern border between Estonia, the northernmost of the three Baltic nations, and Russia includes the Narva River in Northeast Estonia. To the west lies Narva in Estonia, and Hermann Castle, with its high tower, built in 1256 in Danish Estonia, is opposite Ivangorod to the East, long and low, built by Ivan III in 1492. The bridge across the swift currents of Narva River, which empties into the Gulf of Finland to north, is the crossing point for pedestrians, cars, and trucks.
