Man in custody after Tennessee armory shooting
LOBELVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A longtime member of the National Guard was fatally shot at a Guard armory in Tennessee on Wednesday and a second man was taken into custody for questioning, officials said.
The shooting happened about 5 p.m. Wednesday in the town of Lobelville, about 75 miles southwest of Nashville, said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman Josh DeVine.
DeVine said the victim's name was not being released until his family members had been notified. He said a top official, Maj. Gen. Max Haston, identified him as a sergeant first-class who had been with the guard for 20 years.
The armory is usually locked and it was unclear how the shooter got into the building, DeVine said. He said the building does not have surveillance cameras, but that at least one other person besides the shooter and the victim was at the armory at the time. It was unclear whether there were any eyewitnesses, however, he said.
DeVine said a person of interest was taken into custody for questioning, but had not been charged. DeVine said the person, a man, was not employed at the armory.

Police Search for Shooter After Person Killed at National Guard Armory in Perry County

A fatal shooting occurred on Wednesday at the US National Guard Armory in Lobelville, Tenn. in Perry County.
The victim was a Sergeant First Class, who was 20-year veteran with the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment. He oversaw day-to-day activities of personnel, administration and maintenance. The identity is being withheld pending notification of the family.
According to a press release, Perry County deputies responded to a 911 call shortly after 4 p.m. Deputies arrived to find one male victim suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest.
While deputies began securing the scene and immediately searching for the shooter, the victim was airlifted by medical helicopter to Nashville for further treatment. The victim was later pronounced dead.
A person of interest is in custody. Police are not yet saying that person was the shooter.
Police said the shooter was described as a white male in his late teens to early 20s. He was wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans and red shirt.
During a short press conference, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman Josh DeVine said several shot were fired but declined to elaborate on relationship between the shooter and the victim.
The armory is located on Highway 13 in Perry County between the town of Lobelville and the town of Linden.
