The Shrinath Ji Temple is located in Nathdwara at a distance of 48 km from Udaipur, Rajasthan and dedicated to Shrinathji (Form of Krishna). It is believed that, this form of Shrinath ji is self-manifested. The image of Shrinathji in this temple is worth seeing and feeling the celestial beauty of the God. Lord Shrinathji symbolizes a form of Lord Krishna, when he lifted the 'Govardhana' (a hill). The idol is carved out of a large black stone. Images of two cows, a snake, a lion, two peacocks and a parrot by the god's head are imprinted on the idol.
The temple has been designed on the lines of temple of Nanda Maharaj known has Nanda Bhawan. The temple is also known as Haveli (House of Shrinathji). On the Shikhara(top of the temple) 7 flags are flown along with the Sudarshan Chakra - 7 flags indicate 7 houses of Pushtri Marg or Vallabh Sampradaya. Shrinathi ji is known as Thakorji and offered Sewa rather than worship.
The beautiful meaning of Shrinathji Swaroop is given by Vaishnava. It is believed that Shrinath ji is the form of Lord Krishna, located at entrance of Nikunj. Lord Krishna has raised his left hand and called his devotees saying, Shri beloved! Thousands of travelers are separated from me for years. I cannot bear without you. Come and enjoy Ras Lila with me. Left hand indicates that Lord will not pick devotees on their qualification or eligibility for Pushtimarg. It also indicates that Lord invites devotees for Lila Ras because Lord wants to raise them above the temporal joy of life and indulge in Bhajananad and divine beauty of Lord Shrinathi ji. The idol of Shrinath ji is in form of dance which shows Swaroop of Raslila.
The temple authorities have not less than 500 cows and amongst them; one is regarded as Shrinathji's cow. It is considered that this cow has come from the pedigree that served the lord for centuries. Earlier, wagon-loads of food used to come here, which were said to be consigned by and consigned to Shrinathji. The holy shrine of Shrinathji is famous all over Rajasthan and India.
Major Festivals
1. Annakuta: It is one of the largest festivals celebrated in Nathdwara. On this day, as a part of rituals, rice is offered to Lord Shrinathji and the gates remain closed. In the evening, gates are opened for devotees to collect Annakuta Prasad.
2. Diwali: It is another important festival celebrated at Nathdwara temple, as it precedes the Annakuta festival.
3. Janmashtami: This is the major festival celebrated in Nathdwara, as the day of birth of Lord Krishna.
4. Holi: Holi is also one of the important festivals here that is celebrated with great gusto. In Pushti Marg, the tempo for the festival is built up over several weeks. From Vasant Panchami onwards, the Lord wears white clothes and plays with an ever increasing amount abil and gulal each day. The pichoies in the haveli are also white and are artistically coloured to recreate an atmosphere of Vrindavan in the heart of the haveli.
