◆ ◆ The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
The National Museum of Modern Art (MOMAT) was the first national art museum in Japan. The museum owns a collection of contemporary artworks from the Meiji Era (1868 – 1912) all the way to the present. Japan was a closed country until the beginning of the Meiji era, but after Japan opened to the West, many young Japanese artists went abroad to study art in Europe. The Japanese painting style mixed with the influences of foreign art is very unique and interesting!
Don't miss the view from the 'Room with a view'. From here, you can see the moat and some parts of the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace.
Also, starting in spring 2019, MOMAT guide staff do guided tours through the collection of the museum in English!

The Crafts Gallery owns a huge collection consisting of numerous Japanese ceramics, glassware, lacquerware, dyed fabrics and graphic design lined up from the Meiji Era (1868-1912) to the present age. Pieces from the collection are shown in unique theme exhibitions. Also, the Crafts Gallery is designated as an important cultural asset.
※The crafts gallery will close and move to Ishikawa Prefecture from March 2020.

The Science Museum is one big playground. The building has 5 fully packed floors where you can dive into science and learn something new. The exhibition is designed for all ages – there is something for everyone, from children to adults. It’s a great place to deepen your understanding of science while playing or watching some live experiments in the lab. Don't miss this wonderful museum!!

Opened in 1971, the National Archives of Japan is the place where Japanese historical materials and important official documents are preserved. Since you can also visit the facility, please stop by and visit the permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions. It’s a recommended facility not only for those who want to learn more about Japanese history but also for researchers!
In addition, you can access parts of the collections online. The archive is especially proud of the web version of its huge Genroku map of Japan, which is an Important Cultural Properties . A must-see!

Couples apply to marry on 1st day of new emperor
(1 May 2019) Japanese couples lined up to submit marriage documents to coincide with Japan's new Emperor Naruhito taking the throne, marking a new start of the Reiwa era on Wednesday.
In Tokyo's Chiyoda City government office, dozens of couples waited to officially tie the knot.
The Chiyoda ward is an area of Tokyo that includes the Imperial Palace, where the ceremonies for the new emperor's coronation are taking place.
Shun Chino, who works in public relations for Chiyoda City government, said they expected dozens of couples to submit marriage documents on May 1st.
He said they had already received over 80 preliminary submissions.
Due to a large number of inquiries, they decided to open the office during the national holiday.
The government office also increased the number of staff and opened a Reiwa photo booth spot for couples to snap pictures as memorabilia.
One such couple was Ryo Hayasaka, a 26-year-old apparel buyer, and Haruka Miyajima, a 26-year-old retail industry worker.
Miyajima said she was thrilled to get married at the start of the new era.
Natsumi Nishimura, a 27-year-old sales worker, was also at the office to submit her marriage registration with husband, Keigo Mori, a 32-year-old government worker.
Nishimura said they decided to pick a date they won't forget.
Japan was in a festive mood Wednesday while celebrating the imperial succession.
Naruhito succeeded to the Chrysanthemum Throne at midnight after Emperor Emeritus Akihito retired the previous day.

Views of Japanese Emperor and Empress, somewhat out of sequence. Members of public, men, Women and children, wearing special tags,are assembled,and seated on the ground along a roadway outside the Yasukuni Shrine, in Chiyoda, Tokyo Japan. Several uniformed guards wearing white arm bands, stand amongst them. Japanese gov't plans to establish exhibition hall to falsely claim sovereignty over Dokdo

Japan, which has continually claimed sovereignty over South Korea's easternmost Dokdo Island,... now plans to build an exhibition hall in the heart of Tokyo to claim ownership over the territory.

Tokyo's Hibiya Park is the venue for a regular cultural exchange event between South Korea and Japan.
Yet, here at the park,... the Japanese government is reportedly establishing a permanent exhibition hall falsely claiming Korea's Dokdo Island as Japanese territory.
Japan's Kyodo News Agency says the government plans to build an exhibition hall with materials on Dokdo, or what Japan calls Takeshima... and the Diaoyu Islands, known in Japan as the Senkakus.
Hibiya Park attracts many foreign tourists as it's adjacent to the residence of the Japanese Emperor.
And there are also a number of government offices nearby,... including the Diet Building.
Tokyo plans to display archive materials that have been used to claim sovereignty over Dokdo,... as well as various video materials to attract the younger generation.
Pointing to the Japanese government's first official exhibition hall to back its provocative actions over Dokdo,... pundits say the decision reflects the voices of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to intensify territorial education in Japan.

It is a large park-like area located in the Chiyoda area of Tokyo close to Tokyo Station and contains several buildings including the main palace (Kyūden (宮殿?), the private residences of the imperial family, an archive, museum and administrative offices. It is built on the site of the old Edo castle. The total area including the gardens is 3.41 square kilometres (1.32 sq mi). During the height of the 1980s Japanese property bubble, the palace grounds were valued by some as more than the value of all the real estate in the state of California.
History
Edo castle
After the capitulation of the Shogunate and the Meiji Restoration, the inhabitants, including the Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu, were required to vacate the premises of the Edo Castle. Leaving Kyoto Imperial Palace, on 26 November 1868 the emperor arrived at Edo castle, made it to his new residence and renamed it to Tōkei Castle (東京城 Tōkei-jō). At this time Tōkyō had also been called Tōkei. He left for Kyōto again, and after coming back on 9 May 1869 it was renamed to Imperial Castle (皇城 Kōjō).
Previous fires already destroyed the Honmaru area containing the old donjon (which itself burned in the 1657 Meireki fire). On the night of 5 May 1873, a fire consumed the Nishinomaru Palace (formerly the shogun's residence), and the new imperial Palace Castle (宮城 Kyūjō) was constructed on the site in 1888.
A non-profit Rebuilding Edo-jo Association (NPO江戸城再建) was founded in 2004 with the aim of a historically correct reconstruction of at least the main donjon. In March 2013 Naotaka Kotake, head of the group, said that The capital city needs a symbolic building, and that the group planned to collect donations and signatures on a petition in the hope of having the tower rebuilt. A reconstruction blueprint had been made based on old documents. The Imperial Household Agency had not indicated whether it would support the project.

Thousands visit cherry blossoms in Tokyo park
(31 Mar 2016) Thousands of visitors have flocked to Ueno Park in Tokyo to savour the cherry blossoms in full bloom and to celebrate the onset of Spring.
Japan's Meteorological Agency on Thursday announced the cherry blossom trees in Tokyo had reached their peak bloom of the season.
In recent years, many tourists have joined in the Japanese tradition to eat packed lunches sitting on the grounds under the trees.
The Ueno park boasts around a thousand cherry blossom trees, known as sakura in Japanese, ranging from the pastel somei yoshino, to the willowing shidare sakura.
The age-old tradition of celebrating Spring under the blossoms usually lasts for only a few weeks, before the petals fall and give way to green leaves.

Seoul on Tokyo announcement of lifting some sanctions against NKorea
South Korea called for Japan's lifting of sanctions against North Korea to be conducted transparently on Thursday.
South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson Noh Kwang-il said at a news briefing in Seoul that any actions of the Japanese government should be carried out within the range of not damaging the international cooperation of South Korea, the US, and Japan towards North Korea's nuclear weapons and missiles (programme).
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Thursday his government will lift some of its sanctions on North Korea in response to Pyongyang's decision to create a committee to investigate the fate of at least a dozen Japanese who were abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 1980s.
After years of denial, North Korea acknowledged in 2002 that its agents had abducted Japanese to train its spies and eventually returned five of them.
