NATIONAL FARM TOY MUSEUM FORD-NEW HOLLAND TOYS SECTION
Visiting the World Headquarters for Tractor Toys and the Field of Dreams
I had an opportunity to speak to a group of equipment companies in Minneapolis last week about YouTube, then planned to meet my family in Wisconsin for a long weekend getaway. My older daughters both live in Chicago and my youngest daughter is shopping for colleges and the University of Wisconsin is on her radar. She was off school for a couple of days, so the plan was for me to rent a car to drive from Minneapolis to Madison, meet up with the family, then head back home from there with my wife and youngest daughter when we were done.
In planning the trip I Googled Things to do in Iowa or something like that and found that the National Farm Toy Show would be held the day I was driving through, how could I not make that a destination?
I've always been a fan of farm toys...when I was in the business, about every time you went to a product introduction you received a free model of whatever was being introduced. I have a closet full of toys that'll probably go in the estate auction someday when I croak. So, if nothing else, I wanted to see if any of those toys had become ultra collectible and that maybe I was sitting on a gold mine. Turns out I'm not :(.
The National Farm Toy Show is held in Dyersville, Iowa each fall at the National Farm Toy Museum. You may wonder why the little town of 4,000 just west of the Illinois/Wisconsin border hosts such an event, it's because most tractor toys come from there. It's because a guy named Fred Ertl, Sr. decided to start building model tractors there in 1959. Other companies spun off from the original Ertl Company, led by family members or former employees, and now the town is definitely the farm toy capitol of North America, if not the world.
On the visit to Dyersville I saw every conceivable farm toy you could imagine, those for sale at the National Farm Toy Show, and those just to look at in the National Farm Toy Museum. If you're a fan of tractors, you can get a real education about their history by looking at the toys that came with them.
Dyersville is also the location of the baseball diamond that was the centerpiece of the movie Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner. In the movie, his character started hearing voices telling him to build a baseball diamond in his corn field, of course, all the neighbors made fun of him and he nearly went broke, in the end it became a tourist attraction and the farm was saved. I was a big fan of that movie, and the field is about four miles north and east of Dyersville so I went out there and took some pictures.
On the way home, it hit me how similar starting a YouTube channel is to what Kevin Costner went through. I recreate the high points of the movie at the end of today's video. Check out my amazing special effects...
Bottom line, if you're ever in eastern Iowa I highly recommend checking out Dyersville. It's a pretty part of the country and a great place to visit if you're a fan of tractors and/or baseball.

Field of Dreams Movie Site - Dyersville Iowa
The Field of Dreams is a baseball field and pop-culture tourist attraction built originally for the movie of the same name. It is in Dubuque County, Iowa, near Dyersville. The studio built the baseball diamond on two farms, a few miles outside Dyersville. When production completed, the baseball diamond created for the movie was left behind. Most of the baseball field, including the diamond and the adjacent house, was on one farm owned by the Lansing family, but the left and center field were on an adjacent property owned by the Ameskamp family. The field was built on the two properties because the producers wanted the field in a location where sunset shots would be uninhibited. After filming completed, the Lansing family kept their portion of the field intact, and added a small hut where visitors could buy souvenirs. The Ameskamp family returned their land to farming for a year, but then restored the remainder of the field and opened up their own souvenir stand. The two owners had operated separate tourist facilities, and had also been at odds regarding commercialization of the site. Today the property is owned by one owner and it receives more visits than ever.

2018 Dyersville St. Patrick's Day Parade
It seems the small town of Dyersville, Iowa plays host to the most excitement in the Tri States on St. Patricks Day. My girlfriend Justyna and I set out to see what it was all about. A very community wide driven parade with local groups, businesses and fire departments from all around. The candy was flying and so was I. Enjoy the aerial shots as well as the stills. Cheers
