About the 'Made in Britain' exhibition:
'Made in Britain' is a major exhibition of the UK contemporary art from the British Council Collection, hosted by the National Gallery of Arts from 1 June to 5 August 2012.
The exhibition is featuring 118 artworks covers the thirty year period (1980 -- 2010) when enormous shifts have taken place in the role which art plays within British society. From Gilbert & George's Intellectual Depression of 1980 to Gary Hume's Sister Troop, this exhibition tells the story of how art has mapped and reflected these changes -- and indeed been at the very forefront of social change itself. Originally created in collaboration between UK and Chinese curators, it was re-visioned especially for the showing at the National Gallery of Arts in Tirana.
The British Council Collection, known as 'Museum Without Walls', is a unique assembly of over 8,500 artworks that demonstrate the very best in contemporary British practice in all media -- from painting and sculpture to printmaking, photography, time-based installation and video work. Started in 1930s, it is a comprehensive representation of the best UK art of the XX century.

Sefedin Stafa was born August 8, 1952 in the province of Mati in Burrel, Albania. His works can be found at the National Museum and the Palace of Culture in Tirana and Elbasan and Burrel galleries. He was a professor at the University of Alexander Juvani in Albania. He now lives in Greece.

Sefedin Stafa is a graduate of the the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana (1978) specializing in monumental painting. He has participated in several national exhibitions in Albania and has had several one man shows in his home city of Tirana at Tirana's National Art Gallery. Also exhititions in Athens, Greece. He has been rewarded several times locally and three times nationaly . Many of his works are found today in galleries and private collections in Greece, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, USA and Canada.

Of course Albania was completely isolated and in these 50 years we had just the Russian school social realism. An art framed within an ideological, political, framework. Everything was directed into the Party is the State, the State is the Party. Now there is a breath of air and conversation with the Italian and Western art world and it is a pleasure to have such an exhibition in Tirana.

LEADIN
Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee and Andy Warhol have hung around many odd places around the world, but never in Albania. Until now, at least.
Their canvasses are among 71 works of art _ part of a private collection _ exhibited in Albania''s National Gallery for the first time ever.
STORYLINE
Their art was once considered decadent and bourgeois but 20 years after the fall of communism in Albania, art lovers have the opportunity to see the work themselves.
Martani, a surgeon, started collecting in the 1960s.

“Restoration and Musealization of the National Phototeque Marubi”
Marubi” Photo Studio was founded in 1856 by Pietro Marubbi, an Italian painter and photographer, only 19 years after the birth of practical photography.
The studio run through a dynasty of 3 generations till 1946 when Gegë Marubi closed down the studio.
In 1970, the “Marubi” Phototheque was established as a sector of the Historic Museum of Shkodra with an archive of 500.000 photographic glass plate negatives of various sizes and techniques.
The “Restoration and Musealization of the National Phototeque Marubi” is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Albanian Development Fund as part of a regional project financed by the European Union through IPA-CBC Project “Sustainable tourism management of Adriatic Heritage.
The components of restoration, archive preservation, functionality & sustainability is co-financed by: Albanian Government,
Albanian Development Fund through IPA CBC, Albanian-American Development Foundation.
The museographic project is co-financed by Albanian Development Fund & Swiss Cooperation Office in Albania

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Albania and let's go to Gjirokastra's eerie hilltop castle is one of the biggest in the Balkans. There's been a fortress here since the 12th century, although much of what can be seen today dates to the early 19th century. The castle remains somewhat infamous due to its use as a prison under the communists. Inside there's a collection of armoury, two good museums, plenty of crumbling ruins to scramble around, and superb views over the valley.
Albania, on Southeastern Europe’s Balkan Peninsula, is a small country with Adriatic and Ionian coastlines and an interior crossed by the Albanian Alps. The country has many castles and archaeological sites. Capital Tirana centers on sprawling Skanderbeg Square, site of the National History Museum, with exhibits spanning antiquity to post-communism, and frescoed Et’hem Bey Mosque.

A conversation accompanying the eponymous exhibition in the AA Gallery, Potential Monuments of Unrealised Futures, which presents work by two Albanian artists: Edi Hila and Adrian Paci. Curated by Beyond Entropy Balkans (Jonida Turani and Stefano Rabolli Pansera), this exhibition was originally commissioned by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Albania for the Pavilion of the Republic of Albania at the 14th International Architecure Exhibition, Venice Biennale 2014. The exhibition explores how modernity can be absorbed through a reflection on the social and cultural dynamics presented in the work of the two artists. The unrealized futures are the promises of modernity; partially realised, but yet not completed.
Edi Hila (b. Albania 1944) has participated in numerous international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (1999), After the Wall at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1999), Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and the Ludvig Museum in Budapest (2000), Blood and Honey - Future’s in the Balkans at the Essl Museum in Vienna (2003) and the Liverpool Biennale (2010). His works are part of the collection of Centre Pompidou, Ville de Paris, René Block, and the National Gallery of Arts of Tirana.
Adrian Paci (b. Albania 1969) has participated in numerous international exhibitions, most notably: Adrian Paci, PS1, MOMA, New York (2005), Motion Picture(s), Kunsthaus Zurich (2010), Lives in transit, Jeu de Paume, Paris (2013) and MAC, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Montréal (2014). Group exhibitions include: Venice Biennale (2005), Street and studio in urban history of photography, Tate Modern, London (2008), Unfinished Journeys, The National Museum of Arts, Oslo (2012) and Neighbours, Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Istanbul (2014).
Beyond Entropy is a London-based non-profit limited company practicing architecture, urbanism, and cultural analysis. The company, founded in 2009 as a collaborative practice operating public-private partnerships globally, developed from trans-disciplinary research at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. Currently Beyond Entropy Ltd operates at the threshold between art, architecture, and geopolitics focusing on the notion of energy influencing urban and architectural form. Projects are located in Africa, in the Balkans and in the Mediterranean region and vary from art installations, to architectural master-planning, to public debates.

Buza Art
BUZA, Abdurrahim was born on December 22, 1905 in Skopje, Macedonia in a patriotic family from Gjakova in the Republic of Kosovo.
The founder and inspirer of the Albanian modern art.
The artist A. Buza is one of the most outstanding personalities of the Albanian visual arts.
A. Buza created what he felt and longed for, patriotic symbolic subjects, lyric motives, everlasting themes of love and life.
He was the incarnation of talent, hard work, originality and distinctiveness, and his death in 1986 left a huge gap in the Albanian cultural life.
Nowadays, some of his masterpieces are part of the collection of the Albanian National Gallery of Arts, and a valued collection is also shown in his atelier-museum in Tirana, Albania.
Buza, Kujtim
His outstanding artistic carrier as a painter started around 1960, and progressed with many exhibitions and awards through the years.
The artist K. Buza was born on April 16, 1937 in Tirana, Albania.
He studied for art theory and criticism in the Academy of Fine Arts in Petersburg, Russia (1959-1961), and graduated as a painter in the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana, Albania (1964).
Mr. Buza is the creator of many paintings and is well known for his landscapes, in which he includes elements of the Albanian nature
Sokol Buza was born in Tirana, Albania in 1972.
He grew up in a family of painters, where each and every day was about art.
As a kid, the atelier where his grandfather and father created their artworks was his playground, and very often he would get yelled for messing with the colors and wasting them.
In the years to come he found himself naturally involved in the process of drawing and painting. He continued his studies in the artistic high school Jordan Misja, and then in the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana, where he graduated as a painter in 1995.
Sokol has been exhibiting since the early 1990s. He has participated in many art shows in Albania and abroad.

Tirana, the heart and capital of Albania, like all other European metropolises has a never-ending movement and energy. With its clubs, pubs, cafes, and taverns, Tirana is worth to discover, both day and night. The value and hospitality shown towards tourists is something that will mark your journey not only in Tirana but also all over the country. There are different thoughts regarding the origin of the name of the city. Some think that it relates to Tyrrenia (a name of Etruscan origins), while other believe that it relates to the word Theranda (harvest), or to the Tirkan (a castle at the foot of Mount Dajti). Your own journey might begin by visiting the museums and the key spots such as Sheshi Skënderbej, where you will be able to see the Mosque of Et’hem Bey (built between 1798 and 1812) and the 35 m high Kulla e Sahatit (the Watch Tower), built in 1822 with a San Marco style cupola. Moreover, you can visit the famous Mosaic uncovered on the floor of an old Roman lodge. Its center configures the walls of the castle of the Roman emperor Justinian (A.D. 520). The monumental Tomb of Kapllan Pasha and the Ura e Tabakëve (a bridge constructed in the beginning of the 19th century, located on Bulevardi Zhan D’Ark) are other interesting place to visit. As a capital, Tirana has the country’s finest museums, theatres, and galleries representing the national arts. A visit to the National History Museum, the Archeological Museum, the private “Mezuraj Museum,” and the National Gallery of the Arts will leave wonderful memories. You can also pass a pleasant evening in the National Theatre or the Opera and Ballet Theatre.
For dining, Tirana will be glad to offer you both a rich traditional cuisine and a variety of foreign fares, from Italian to Chinese, . There are also several clubs and restaurants in Mount Dajti to discover and enjoy. There is the possibility to travel there by cable car, which is a very special experience. In the region of Tirana you may also visit the castles of Petrela and Preza, as well as some natural attractions, such as Pëllumbasi Cave, Shkalla e Tujanit, and much more.

Jorgji Gjikopulli was born in 1939 In Athens, Greece. Graduated in 1964 at the Artistic Lyceum “Jordan Misja” in Tirana and in 1969 at the Arts Academy of Tirana, he started to work for a year as a docent at the National Art Gallery. Until 1982 he was Inspector at the Culture and Education Ministry.
Being a Professor and Head of the Painting Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana for almost 26 years, until 2006, didn’t stop him from continuing to create. In 1999 he opened a solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery. In 2014 he returns with another solo exhibition in Tirana and in 2015 with the exhibition “Identities” in Skodra City Hall Gallery. In March 2017 he had his last solo exhibition called “Where I was, where I want to be”. There’s something that brings together all his works, before and after the ’90s, the colors and the ways he plays with them. The entire work of Jorgji Gjikopulli is a much esteemed painter among art lovers, critics and curators inside and outside his country.
Many of his works are part of private collections in Albania, France, Greece, England, USA, Sweden, Turkey and Algeria. Twelve of his works are part of the National Art Gallery in Tirana Albania.
Fotis Kllogjeri was born in Albania in 1973, studied in the School of Fine Arts of the Tirana University. He is living and working in Thessaloniki, Greece since 1996. He has shown his works in 2 solo exhibitions in Thessaloniki and he has participated in more than 50 exhibitions and art shows in Greece and Albania while many of his artworks belong in Private collections.

Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania.
Tirana, the center of the political, economical, and cultural life, was dubbed the City of Kiosks” for the many small-scale shops and outdoor cafes always full of people.
The Skanderbeg Square is the central and the largest square of the city, named after Albanian hero whose statue stands in the middle.
The Square features great buildings, such as:
The National Historic Museum, the main museum in Tirana
The Opera and Ballet Theater, and the Et'hem Bey Mosque, one of the most impressive mosques in the country.
West of Skanderbeg Square is the brand new Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, featuring rich interior iconography.
South of Skanderbeg Square extends panoramic boulevard with several government buildings and cultural institutions.
In the vicinity of the boulevard, on the recently opened pedestrian street, are located:
The National Theater, the main theater in Albania.
A 6-meter remnant from the Ottoman-era, the Tirana Castle Walls.
And an exhibition hall hosting Albanian and socialist art, the National Art Gallery.
Across the boulevard is the Rinia Park and the Taiwan Complex, popular spot among Albanian celebrities.
And going more to the south is the Lana River, the city’s main stream.
On the other side of the river along the boulevard are situated:
More municipal and national government buildings.
The Pyramid, originally a museum, today a derelict structure untouched for years.
A cold war installation, the Postbllok, a checkpoint featuring concrete pillars from prison camp and an original bunker.
The Former Residence of Enver Hoxha, the communist leader of Albania.
The Palace of Congresses, a venue where numerous festivals and events are held.
And the Mother Teresa Square.
The square is surrounded by:
the Archaeological Museum, the University of Tirana and the Academy of Arts.
Behind this square starts the Grand Park, a popular green area perfect to walk around and enjoy an artificial lake.
The Statue of Mother Albania stands not far away from the park, in the Martyrs' Cemetery. From there is a beautiful view of the city.
Go to the top floor of the Sky Tower for an even better view of the downtown of Tirana.
