RV Trip to the Badlands National Park, South Dakota
About us: We are Briggs on the Road...checking another item off our bucket list...traveling around the country in our RV. High school sweethearts, recently retired, grandparents to 6 sweet joys, previous entrepreneurs, and passionate about making memories together. A few have told us we are a little crazy...driving away from the normal...life is about making memories...so we are embracing the crazy and thanking God for this adventure!
❤️ Thank you for following us on this journey...we hope to inspire you to always follow your dreams! ❤️
This is the video about the lightening strike on our car. ????????
There is simply no place in the world quite like the Badlands. We think the Badlands National Park in South Dakota may be our one of our favorite parks! We are already planning our next visit, it is that awesome! Driving into the epic views from our front window had us completely in awe! The towering layered rock formations shifts from grassland to massive canyons and spans over 240,000 acres. There have been over 200 species of birds recorded in the park. Be sure to bring your binoculars!
This park is home to bison, longhorn sheep, bobcat, bison and the endangered black-footed ferret.
The first stop we made was the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. The rangers gave us maps, information on hikes and where we would mostly be able to view wildlife.
We started out driving the 40 mile Badlands Loop Road. There are dozens of places you can pull off and walk to observation areas to soak in all the beauty and take some amazing photos. Most of the hiking trails are accessible from this loop.
Be sure to stop at Roberts Prairie Dog Town. They are located where Rim Road and Sage Creek Road meet. These cute little fluffy critters are beyond precious and entertaining. They are chatty and busy and there are hundreds of them. It is their own little city and seem to enjoy showing off for you!
We loved our visit to the Badlands. The beauty it offers is breathtaking! Have you explored this National Park? If you have, leave us a comment of your favorite memory. ????

Wall was platted in 1907 when the Chicago and North Western Railroad was extended to that point.[7] The town was incorporated in 1908.[8] Wall was named from the nearby steep Badlands.[9]
The town is most famous for the Wall Drug Store, which opened as a small pharmacy in 1931 during the Depression, but eventually developed into a large roadside tourist attraction.[10]
The National Grasslands Visitor Center is located in Wall.
As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 766 people, 359 households, and 212 families residing in the town. The population density was 353.0 inhabitants per square mile (136.3/km2). There were 436 housing units at an average density of 200.9 per square mile (77.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 88.9% White, 0.1% African American, 7.0% Native American, 0.1% Asian, and 3.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.
There were 359 households of which 21.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.6% were married couples living together, 4.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 40.9% were non-families. 39.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.82.
The median age in the town was 47.1 years. 21.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.7% were from 25 to 44; 31.8% were from 45 to 64; and 19.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 50.4% male and 49.6% female.
The Badlands Loop (4/17/17)
We start the morning with breakfast at Cedar Pass Lodge's restaurant (fry bread with a fruit concoction, yum!). We then take the Badlands Loop Road, heading counter clockwise, stopping at Wall Drug. We take a moment to visit a boondocking spot in Buffalo Gap National Grassland as featured by Adventurevanman. Heading back into Badlands, we take a small detour on Sage Creek Rim Road to the west where we encounter big horn sheep and a pair of buffalo hanging out at Roberts Prarie Dog Town. After backtracking back to Wall to visit the National Grasslands Visitor Center, we continue on our way, completing the second half of the loop while stopping at various points of interest within Badlands. Eventually we make it back to Cedar Pass Lodge for our second meal there in the same day. Mmmmmmm, more of their delicious fry bread, this time in Navajo Taco form!

SUMMARY
=======
Buffalo Gap National Grassland is a National Grassland located primarily in southwestern South Dakota, United States. It is also the second largest National Grassland, after Little Missouri National Grassland in North Dakota. Characteristics of the grasslands include mixed prairie and chalky badlands. The grassland is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and is a division of Nebraska National Forest. In descending order of land area it is located in parts of Fall River, Pennington, Jackson, and Custer counties.
Buffalo Gap National Grassland is managed by the Forest Service together with the Nebraska and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forests and the Fort Pierre and Oglala National Grasslands from common offices in Chadron, Nebraska. There are local ranger district offices located in Hot Springs and Wall. It also surrounds Badlands National Park and Minuteman Missile National Historic Site.
In what is known as the Conata Basin region of the grassland, the most successful Black-footed ferret reintroduction program undertaken by the federal government, has established a small but sustainable population of these previously extirpated mammals.
In 2010, South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson introduced the Tony Dean Cheyenne River Valley Conservation Act of 2010, a bill that would designate over 48,000 acres (19,000 ha) of the National Grassland as protected wilderness. The act would allow the continuation of grazing and hunting on the land and would create the first national grassland wilderness in the country. In Jan. 2013, Charmaine White Face raised concerns about radiation exposure of South Dakota Army National Guard soldiers in the Buffalo Gap National Grassland.
Entering the Forest Service
2001. An overview of the USDA Forest Service for new employees. The program is divided into seven sections covering: the agency's history and organizational structure, the National Forest System, Research, State & Private Forestry, Fire, Wilderness, and Visitor information. The video features the diverse landscapes of the National Forests and Grasslands, and the dedicated employees who care for the land and serve people.
America's Grasslands
2001. This is the story of our National Grasslands. These wind swept seas of grass and wildflowers have witnessed the pageant of the frontier, the Dust Bowl, and their reclamation. Managed for sustainable multiple-use as part of the National Forest System, these lands total almost 4 million acres. The USDA Forest Service contributes to the conservation of grassland ecosystems while producing a variety of goods and services which, in turn, have helped to maintain rural economics and lifestyles.
Designing Seed Mixes for Native Habitat
Presented by Justin Meissen, Tallgrass Prairie Center Research and Restoration Program. February 16, 2017.
A well-designed seed mix is an essential component of any native habitat restoration project. The seeds we use in each mix ultimately define the character of restored vegetation, and determine how well a restoration project can meet its goals. In this webinar, we’ll cover the basic principles of seed mix design, review some of the tools currently available for designing seed mixes, and walk through several design examples using the Tallgrass Prairie Center’s Iowa Prairie Seed Calculator. The Iowa Prairie Seed Calculator ( incorporates the core concepts of seed mix design with a user-friendly interface, taking seeding method, planting time, and planting site conditions into account to produce an ecologically appropriate seed mix ready to send to commercial seed producers.
Presented by Justin Meissen, Tallgrass Prairie Center Research and Restoration Program. Justin is responsible for implementing restoration research and demonstration projects, creating training seminars, giving presentations, and developing technical materials for multiple audiences including roadside managers and other conservation professionals. He has a PhD in Conservation Biology from the University of Minnesota and a BS in Integrative Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Justin has worked professionally in restoration ecology and botany from North Carolina to California with The Nature Conservancy, The Audubon Society, and other non-profits and environmental contractors. His PhD research at the University of Minnesota evaluated the risks of repeated, intensive seed harvest from native tallgrass prairies to supply large-scale prairie restoration. Justin is also an avid nature photographer whose work can be found throughout the web, particularly on his Flickr page. Register now to receive additional details about participating in the webinar in a follow up email prior to the webinar and on the confirmation page after completing this form. This is a collaborative effort between the Monarch Joint Venture and the National Conservation Training Center. We look forward to your participation!

Saving the Last of the Southern Plains Bison
Caprock Canyons State Park holds the last remnants of pure Southern Plains Bison that exists in North America. Once numbering around 60 million, now there are only 80; the history of how they came to live at the state park, on their native historic land is a long one. Because of the hard work of a few individuals, these Bison live on.

Lone Star Land Steward: T Star Ranch
When Bruce Thomas acquired the T Star Ranch in 2004 from a local rancher, mesquite had invaded the majority of the property, decreasing the native grasses and limiting the food supply for wildlife on the property. For the past 12 years, his family has worked to restore the once-overgrazed pastures back to native grassland on this 231 acre property.
