New Fossil Discovery
[Anchor Lead]
The fossil of a hopping mammal from the Cretaceous Period has been found in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do Province. It's a first of its kind discovery worldwide. Let’s find out more.
[Pkg]
This layer of rock comes from the Jinju Formation stratum, which dates back some 110 million years. The footprints suggest a rather small sized animal jumped nine steps using two hind legs. The width of the gait is believed to be 4 centimeters and the animal likely weighs around 300 grams. The stride and the foot length are similar to those of a kangaroo rat. It's the first time in the world for a fossil to be found belonging to a hopping mammal originating from the Cretaceous Period which is the last segment of the Mesozoic Era.
[Soundbite] Lim Jong-deok(Nat'l Research Institute of Cultural Heritage) : It's the first-ever fossil evidence showing a hopping mammal lived in the Cretaceous Period. It also indicates a variety of vertebrates existed in Korea.
This fossil was discovered in January last year in Jinju by a research team at Chinju National University of Education. Korean, American and Chinese researchers jointly took part in its analysis.
[Soundbite] Prof. Kim Gyeong-su(Chinju Nat'l University of Education) : The site where the fossil was found was the edge of a lake 110 million years ago. This explains the evidence of many living organisms that inhabited the waterside area.
The fossil has been named Koreasaltipes Jinjuensis, after the area in which it was found. It will be unveiled to the public at the National Heritage Center in Daejeon in the latter half of next year.

Seoul Drone Flight: Seoul (/soʊl/, like soul; Korean: 서울 [sʰʌ.ul] ; lit. Capital), officially the Seoul Special City, is the capital and largest metropolis of South Korea. With surrounding Incheon metropolis and Gyeonggi province, Seoul forms the heart of the Seoul Capital Area. Seoul is ranked as the fourth largest metropolitan economy in the world and is larger than London and Paris. Strategically situated on the Han River, Seouls history stretches back over two thousand years, when it was founded in 18 BCE by the people of Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. As with its long history, the Seoul Capital Area contains five UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeok Palace, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo Shrine, Namhansanseong and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. More recently, Seoul has been a major site of modern architectural construction – major modern landmarks include the N Seoul Tower, the 63 Building, the Lotte World Tower, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Lotte World, Trade Tower, COEX, and the IFC Seoul. Seoul was named the 2010 World Design Capital. As the birthplace of K-pop and the Korean Wave, Seoul received over 10 million international visitors in 2014, making it the worlds 9th most visited city and 4th largest earner in tourism. Today, Seoul is considered a leading and rising global city, resulting from the South Korean economic boom - commonly referred to as the Miracle on the Han River - which transformed it into the worlds 7th largest metropolitan economy with a GDP of US$635.4 billion in 2014 after Tokyo, New York City and Los Angeles. International visitors generally reach Seoul via AREX from the Incheon International Airport, notable for having been rated the best airport for nine consecutive years (2005–2013) by the Airports Council International. In 2015, it was rated Asias most livable city with the second highest quality of life globally by Arcadis, with the GDP per capita (PPP) in Seoul being $39,786. Inhabitants of Seoul are faced with a high cost of living, for which the city was ranked 6th globally in 2017. Seoul is also an extremely expensive real estate market, ranked 5th in the world for the price of apartments in the downtown center. With major technology hubs centered in Gangnam and Digital Media City, the Seoul Capital Area is home to the headquarters of 15 Fortune Global 500 companies, including Samsung, LG, and Hyundai. Ranked sixth in the Global Power City Index and Global Financial Centres Index, the metropolis exerts a major influence in global affairs as one of the five leading hosts of global conferences. Seoul has hosted the 1986 Asian Games, 1988 Summer Olympics, 2002 FIFA World Cup, and more recently the 2010 G-20 Seoul summit. // Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a huge metropolis where modern skyscrapers, high-tech subways and pop culture meet Buddhist temples, palaces and street markets. Notable attractions include futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a convention hall with curving architecture and a rooftop park; Gyeongbokgung Palace, which once had more than 7,000 rooms; and Jogyesa Temple, site of ancient locust and pine trees. Other highlights include the National Museum of Korea and War Memorial of Korea, dedicated to the countrys history and art, plus Lotte World, a massive amusement park located next to supertall skyscraper Lotte World Tower. Neighborhoods range from the ritzy shopping district of Gangnam and trendy, nightlife-centric Hongdae to expat-oriented Itaewon and villagelike Insa-dong, full of Korean barbecue joints, tearooms and noodle shops. Dividing them is the Han River, lined with parks and promenades. Just outside town, N Seoul Tower, atop Namsan Mountain, offers panoramic views, while 836m Bukhan Mountain is a popular hiking spot. CICGFC 2011: Cavatina Duo perform The Carnival in Venice
Siddha Foundation presents Calcutta International Classical Guitar Festival 2011
Date: 4 January 2012
Venue: ICCR, Kolkata
Artistes: Cavatina Duo
The Cavatina Duo - Eugenia Moliner, flute (Spain) and Denis Azabagic, guitar (Bosnia)—has become one of the most impressive combinations of its kind in the world. Critics are raving:
“Style, sympathy, and technical aplomb . . . it's doubtful that the Cavatina's sophisticated and artistic playing could be surpassed.” —Fanfare
Dedicated soloists and chamber musicians, the Cavatina Duo breaks convention with their combination of instruments. Add to that their daring choices of varied and versatile repertoire, and the result is new sounds, colors and musical phrasings, which in return awakens a high level of emotion and audience response. A Cavatina Duo concert is a musical experience you don’t want to miss.
The Cavatina Duo has captivated audiences with their electrifying performances in such major venues and festivals as Ravinia’s Raising Stars series (Chicago), Da Camera Society (Los Angeles), Aix-en-Provence Summer Festival (France), the National Concert Hall of Taipei (Taiwan), National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing (China), National Flute Convention Gala Concert (USA), the Harris Theater (Chicago), Kolkata International Guitar Festival (India), Foundation Principe Felipe and Palau de la Musica (Spain), among many others.
Radio and television stations in Europe and North America such as WFMT and NPR have broadcast the duo’s performances. They have been the subjects of interviews in international magazines such as Chamber Music America, TodoFlauta (Spain), FluteTalk (USA), Classical Guitar (UK), Guitarra Magazine (web), Soundboard (USA) and Flute—the British Flute Society. They are the first guitar and flute duo to be featured on the covers of both Classical Guitar Magazine (UK) and the cover of FluteTalk (USA)
Cavatina Duo has performed with orchestras and string quartets in Europe, USA, India, South Korea and Mexico including the Chicago Sinfonietta, Traverse Symphony, Sarajevo Philharmonic, Daejeon Philharmonic and the Youth Orchestra of Monterrey, Mexico. In 2010 Cavatina Duo gave the world premier of another work commissioned by them from Alan Thomas, “Concerto for Flute, Guitar and Orchestra,” with the Camerata Serbica at the Guitar Art Festival in Belgrade.
Eugenia Moliner has been acclaimed as “brilliant” by the British Flute Society magazine. She has performed with principal musicians from the Chicago Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic and Toronto Symphony orchestras as well with many chamber ensembles, including the Chicago Chamber Musicians, Civitas Ensemble, Chinese Fine Arts Musicians. This season she will collaborate with the Aspen String Trio. Her discography includes eight CDs.
A prize-winner in twenty-four international competitions, Denis Azabagic has been described as a “virtuoso with flawless technique” by Soundboard Magazine. He has appeared as soloist with orchestras such as the Chicago and Madrid Symphonies, among many others. Azabagic has collaborated with the Chicago Chamber Musicians, the Civitas Ensemble and the Cuarteto Casals. His discography includes twelve CDs, two DVDs and a manual.
The Duo has compiled a substantial number of recordings on the Spanish and North American labels Opera Tres, Cedille, Bridge and Orobroy Records.
For “The Balkan Project” (Cedille 2010) Cavatina Duo commissioned new works for flute and guitar; they selected nine composers and chose music from the Balkans, reflecting Azabagic's heritage.
Their following release was “Cavatina Duo Plays Astor Piazzolla” (Bridge 2010). This time they commissioned Grammy winner Sérgio Assad and his daughter Clarice, a rising star in the music world, to arrange/compose many works originally written for other combination of instruments or, as in the case of the Flute Etudes, creating the guitar part as well. Mr. Assad, having worked with Piazzolla himself, was the perfect match for this project.
Denis Azabagic and Eugenia Moliner are Artists-Faculty at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University and teaching associates at the University of Illinois at Chicago, UIC.
