Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, VNLU (Ukrainian: Національна бібліотека України імені В.І. Вернадського) is the main academic library and main scientific information centre in Ukraine, one of the world's largest (top twenty) national libraries. It is located in the capital of the country – Kiev. The library contains about 15 million items. The library has the most complete collection of Slavic writing, archives of outstanding world and Ukrainian scientists and cultural persons. The holdings include the collection of the Presidents of Ukraine, archive copies of Ukrainian printed documents from 1917, and archives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Meet Ukraine’s Youngest Library Head: His Story Will Inspire Anyone

Dmytro Ruzhevych is 14 years old and despite his difficult diagnosis he became the youngest library director in Ukraine. An expert commission even inscribed him into the Ukrainian Book of Records. Hromadske went to Donetsk to find out how he managed to do it.

Dmytro lives in the village Sergiyivka in the Donetsk region. The population of this war zone village is about 2 thousand people. Dmytro has spinal muscular atrophy. He can only move one finger. Nevertheless, he is the youngest volunteer library director in Ukraine.

In his room, which is in fact the first open library in the village, there is a huge bookcase full of books.

Ukrainian Library Raid: Director arrested, dozens of ‘extremist' books seized

The Ukrainian Library of Literature in Moscow, raided by Russian police; its director – arrested on suspicion of ‘inciting ethnic hatred'.
Investigators claim the center's leader, 58-year-old Natalya Sharina had distributed the banned work of author Dmytro Korchynskyy, a Ukrainian nationalist author.

But workers there said that the library head had been set up – arguing the books found had been taken by police in 2010 and never returned.

National Aviation University (Ukrainian: Національний авіаційний університет) is a university located in Kiev (Kyiv), Ukraine. It starts its history in 1933 when on the basis of Mechanical department of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute was founded Kyiv Aviation Institute. The structure of the University consists of 16 institutes, 2 separate faculties, 3 lyceums, 6 colleges, 12 research institutes including their subdivisions and 8 departments. The university has its own Center for Culture and arts, a medical center, a library, and a museum of aviation. It runs a newspaper, Aviator, and a Yacht Club.[

The history of National Aviation University dates back to August, 1933. During the years of functioning National Aviation University prepared thousands of experts which work in Ukraine and almost 90 countries of the world. It became the leading institution for training specialists in civil aviation. Some of the alumni are notable industry organizers, scientists, state and military figures. They head educational institutions, air companies, design bureaus, factories, organizations and services within different departments. The university has powerful scientific schools in the fields of mechanics, management, electronics, materials science, electrical engineering, computer science and computer facilities. Academic activities are performed by a highly skilled scientific and pedagogical team, including 23 academicians, corresponding members of the Academy of Science of Ukraine, 280 doctors of sciences, professors, 830 candidates of sciences and senior lecturers, 54 honored people in science and engineering of Ukraine and winners of State prizes.[2]

The University has joined the Bologna Convention that makes it possible for students to get diplomas of international standard and improve students mobility. The University professors and students have international research collaborations with universities in Spain, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, France, South Korea and other countries. The University is also in cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Two ICAO European Regional Training Centers are successfully functioning for aviation personnel training and upgrading.[2]

Kyiv is one of the most beautiful cities of the world that picturesquely spreads on the Dnipro river hills. As others old cities Kyiv has no exact date of foundation. According to the legend, Kyiv was founded more than 1,500 years ago by three brothers Kyi, Schek, Khoryv and their sister Lybid. The city was named after the oldest brother Kyi. In the 9th century Kyiv became the capital of the Ancient Rus. The territory of this independent state stretched out from the Baltic Sea in the North to the Black Sea in the South and from Volga River in the East to the Carpathians Mountains in the West. Kyiv is often referred as the mother of all cities by Russians and Ukrainians and as a cradle of Slavonic civilization.

Since then, Kyiv has developed into an important center of East Europe attracting foreign businesses and investors to its economic and natural potential. Considering population Kyiv is among the 10 largest cities of Europe. Its historical path is related to the great political and cultural events in Europe and represented in many age-old architectural monuments. 2148 objects of history and culture are located on the territory of Kyiv. Among them are over 100 museums 33 theatres and theatres-studios 53 cultural buildings 140 libraries, 20 concert organizations and independent musical collectives that are working in the capital of Ukraine.

Moscow Library Blaze Conquered: Officials afraid 15% of library collection lost

After a more than 24-hour battle, 147 firefighters have managed to put out a blaze in Moscow at the library of the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences. The president of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Fortov was quoted in the Russian media as saying that some 15% of the library's collection may be lost.

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Ukrainian studies at Harvard University. In the last five decades, scholars associated with Harvard have been at the forefront of changes in the fields of Slavic and East European studies by opening new horizons, suggesting new topics, proposing novel approaches to the study of Ukrainian history, literature, and philology as well as neighboring fields in the humanities and social sciences.

To celebrate this milestone, HURI will hold a two-day commemorative conference, “UKRAINE IN THE WORLD: Fifty Years of Ukrainian Studies at Harvard University,” in Cambridge on May 11-12, 2018. The conference is free and open to the public.

HURI convenes the conference to honor the vision of the founders of Ukrainian studies at Harvard, especially professors Omeljan Pritsak and Ihor Sevcenko; the dedication of the members of the Ukrainian community, who made Ukrainian studies at Harvard possible though their generous donations; and the first generation of scholars and students associated with the Ukrainian Research Institute, who helped put Ukrainian studies on the map of American and world academia. In addition to discussions on the history of Ukrainian studies at Harvard, the conference will also devote a number of panels to discussing the current state and future direction of various fields within Ukrainian studies.
