The National History Museum of Latvia
History of the Museum --
The National History Museum of Latvia, the largest repository of Latvian material culture, was founded in 1869 as the Museum of the Science Committee of the Riga Latvian Society. To enable a better understanding of its foundation and aims, it is necessary to become acquainted with the social setting of Riga more than a century ago.
Introduction
Right up until the 1860s, Riga was a fortified bastion, with its infrastructural and economic development determined by military strategy. It was only following change in strategic considerations, and after dismantling the fortifications, that this ancient trading town developed into an industrial centre with a multi-national population. According to the census of 1867, of the 102 590 citizens 42.9 % were German, 25.1 % Russian and 23.6 % Latvian. Contemporary author Mat_ss Kaudz_te characterized his own national segment of the population as follows: Until the middle of the last century Latvians did not recognize themselves as such, but referred to themselves as none other as farmer, for this is how they were called by those who seemed to be, or were, the ones above them. And indeed, by occupation and status they were nothing else. Even if the appellation Latvian was employed, this was understood to mean farmer, because none imagined that farmer and Latvian were two separate concepts.
The Latvians who had gained prosperity in Riga learned the German language and often denied their ethnic roots. It was not easy to identify their compatriots in the city.
Conditions changed during the latter half of the 19th century following the repeal of discriminatory legislation against farmers. Increasing numbers of Latvians came to Riga and their lifestyles underwent profound changes. The development of a Latvian identity and a growth in its intelligentsia led to an enhanced level of national self-esteem, and Latvians found a need for a social organization to enable purposeful gathering and a venue for cultural recreation, exchange of information and furthering of knowledge.
History Museum of Latvia
di Gianluca Procaccini
The mission of the National History Museum of Latvia is to collect, preserve, research and popularise spiritual and material culture from Latvia and the world from ancient times until today, which has archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, historical or artistic significance, in the interests of the Latvian nation and its people.
On the March, 2008 Museum Park of Āraiši joined to the National History Museum of Latvia. The museum is the Lake Castle, which consists of reconstructions of buildings of Stone and Bronze Age where settlement of Latgalians in 9th -- 11th century was. There are also ruins of medieval castle dated back to Livonian time.
January 2010 Latvian Culture Museum Dauderi joined to the National History Museum of Latvia. Museum's building was built in 1897 as Waldschlössen (at present - Aldaris), family mansion of the owner Adolf von Bingner. It is surrounded with the park created in the beginning of 20th century by Georgs F. F. Kūfalts.

Museum of Occupation, Riga Latvia
The Museum of Occupation is next to the Tourist Information Office in Riga with free admittance. It is depressing but a traveler would be negligent not to learn about a country's history. Poor Latvia underwent 51 years of occupation. First the Soviets, then Nazis, then Soviets once again. Inhuman conditions and brutal Siberian exile for entire families. It's no wonder the older people in the Baltics don't smile. They've been repressed for their entire lives.
It is estimated that over 6 million people died in the Russian gulags!

Museum of the Occupation of Latvia - Guided tour - Part 1
The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation
The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation is the oldest in Latvia and the the whole Baltics, and one of the oldest in Europe. The Museum is situated in Old Riga, in a remarkable architectural monument of the 13th20th centuries the ensemble of the Riga Dom.
The History of the Museum dates back to the 18th century. The rich and diverse collections of the Museum originated from an art and natural sciences collection of Nikolaus von Himsel (17291764), a Riga doctor. Upon his death, his mother Catherina von Himsel carried out his wish to have his collection handed over to the city of Riga. On 22 February 1773, the Riga Town Council founded a museum, named it after Himsel and allocated to it the premises of the so-called Anatomical Theatre at Kalēju Street 34/36 (the building has not survived). In 1791, the Himsel Museum was moved to the east wing of the Dom ensemble, which had been rebuilt to accommodate the city library and the museum. An evidence of this is the image of an astrolabe and the inscription Museum on the pediment of the building. In 1816, a special Arts Cabinet was opened, while in 1881 the merging the collections of the Himsel Museum and the City numismatic collection formed the City Coin Cabinet.

A man next to you is attracting attention. The dress is like a medieval mistake. It is something of a coin of freedom. Riga was founded in 1201, then to the German crusade in the 13th century, and Poland in the 16th century. And in the 18th century it was repeatedly invaded and dominated by Sweden and Russia. After Sweden won the war against Poland, it put the cannon upside down in the sense that it was no longer necessary, but again the war with Russia took place. In the twentieth century, the Latvian Republic was declared independent in 1918, but it was occupied by Nazi Germany and again occupied by the Soviet army. For Latvia, freedom is now precious and meaningful. The more meaningful reason is the freedom to make a human belt in 1989 with Estonia and Lithuania. Of course I do not see it as a memory of oppression, of course. Now it is time to recall Latvia and the declaration of independence in the 90s. I think it plays a role in strengthening the identity as Latvians

Authentic Latvian Houses, farmsteads, windmills, wooden churches, and fishermens villages that represent different regions of Latvia og the 16th to 19th centuries.
Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum Part I
Come and join ''TheCelotajs'' take a journey back through early time by strolling through the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum Part I.
''TheCelotajs'' Note: Due to the size of the museum, the area it covers, its many different buildings and exhibits as well as the amount to photographs taken to show it all, I had to divide this presentation into four parts so you can enjoy it and see it all. Each part is 10 minutes long, so if you don't get through it all in one setting, feel free to return as many times as you want to complete your journey through time past.
When entering the tiny Latvia of the former times that hides unobtrusively behind the pine forest at Lake Jugla, dont strive to perceive it as a reality for it was a reality only to those who have gone long long ago. But the objects, structures and households still continue to exist. You, as a visitor and a stranger will be rewarded with the intimacy of these treasures of our predecessors from times past. This feeling, like any reminiscence of contemporary man, may be vague, imperfect or too subjective though nursed by many and winnowed by the time.
And yet, when walking into the dim rooms of our forefathers and bending your head to the low lintel do remember the symbolic meaning of the movement and pay homage to the history of Latvian people.
At present 121 ancient buildings with more than 3000 household objects are on display in the area of 87 hectars.

After leaving the city where there is a lot of traces of domination, this time I moved for 30 minutes in the city and found the outdoor folk village. It is a collection of historical buildings in Latvia to promote the natural landscape of the countryside. There are craftsmen such as blacksmiths and traditional woodworkers who can make and experience things together. You can walk outside the city, walk through the forest, feel nature and tradition, and find many families with children. I want to go to the sky. Wow ~ I really went far. I do not want to break the car glass. Are you having fun? Yes. The grandfather of the folk village informs the children of the traditional play. The little child is more curious about what this is. My mother is showing a demonstration of being a young person. At this time, my grandfather appeared without fail! It's different from what I did. When you realize it, you have to be very careful from the start. I put the top of the thread on the tree, and my grandfather showed a nice demonstration. Grandfather who wants to show something. The Russians say, 'Get away as far as you can go.' I feel the depth of my life, and my grandfather tells me to stay away from the children if they get hurt. The yarn catcher really flew away. I came here because I could drink clean air near the city. I was a little surprised because I had a camera, but I feel good. I wanted my child to be able to see and learn traditional things that are not artificial
