National Indoor Stadium of China
In order to promote post-Olympic development and use of Olympic venues and vigorous development and prosperity of capital culture, in 2010, the Beijing Municipal Government decided to take back franchise of the National Indoor Stadium (the Stadium), transferring its property rights and management to Beijing Performance & Arts Group. It is an important undertaking of the government in deepening reform of the cultural structure and building a leading cultural flagship company, and is also a key step for pushing forward local urban development and building Beijing into a World City.
The Stadium, also known as the Folding Fan, is one of the three main venues for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, as well as the largest indoor stadium in Asia. It hosted a number of Olympic events, such as the artistic gymnastics, trampolining gymnastics and wheelchair basketball, producing 14 gold medals, 11 of which were won by Chinese athletes. As the Chinese delegation won the most gold medals here, the Stadium acquires the reputation of blessed site and gold medal nest.
Following scientific planning and renovation, the Stadium is currently the largest and the most advanced indoor stadium for cultural and sports events in Beijing. While maintaining its original functions for staging high-level international sports events, the Stadium has also developed various functional areas, including the large performance area with a capacity of 20,000 spectators, the residential circus area with a capacity of 1,800 spectators, the cultural and business events area enough for hundreds of guests, the service and entertainment area and the leisure area. The Stadium is equipped with first-class facilities, and strives to satisfy the requirements of all kinds of large cultural and sports events, hence bringing superb cultural experiences and bright prospects for audience and partners.
The Stadium is under the operation and management of Beijing BPA Cultural Facilities Operation & Management Co., Ltd. The company boasts elites with rich experiences and in-depth involvement in construction and operation of main Olympic venues, and is supported by its parent company, Beijing Performance & Arts Group, a comprehensive platform integrating the businesses of culture, sports and tourism. The National Indoor Stadium (official name) (simplified Chinese: 国家体育馆; traditional Chinese: 國家體育館; pinyin: Guójiā Tǐyùguǎn), is an indoor stadium that is located in the Olympic Green in Beijing, China. The stadium was constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics. It is nicknamed the Fan (扇子, shànzi) due to its design resembling a traditional Chinese folding fan. It is also used for basketball.
The stadium opened its doors on November 26, 2007 for the artistic Gymnastics test event.
At the 2008 Olympics, it hosted the Artistic Gymnastics, Trampolining, and Handball events. After the Olympics, the stadium is used for sports competition, cultural and entertaining purposes, and serves as a multi-functional exercise center for local residents. The stadium will be used for ice hockey during the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 people.
