The Peaceful Transition of Bhutan from Monarchy to Democracy
Even today, Bhutan is the land of deep spirituality. The arts, for example, give expression to religious beliefs and spirituality.
Paintings on statues, on the wall or on banners known as Thangkas showing holy figures.
Bhutan's varied musical forms are also dominated by religious undercurrents. Some were exclusively developed to be performed at religious ceremonies.
In 1984, a 9 member council was established in Bhutan for political affairs to meet the needs of the monk body and to facilitate various religious institutions in the country. The fourth king of Bhutan also had a plan for the smooth running of big Dzongs and other religious buildings.
All those achievements have not only advanced Buddhist studies in the country but also enabled the monk body to take up social causes based on religious philosophy.
In Bhutan, The national dress is still the most common attire and it is worn with a great sense of pride. According to the Bhutanese code of conduct, the Driglam Namzha, children are raised to respect their elders. The Preservation of cultural heritage does not imply that Bhutan intends to remain static and isolated. Minister Lyonpo Sangay Nidup can be seen taking pictures of His Majesty, the then king, talking with students.

The yogi Jetsun Milarepa at Bhutan's Druk Wangyel Festival
The yogi Jetsun Milerapa levitates in thin air. The bare bodied performer withstood the icy temperature for more than 40 minutes.
The Dochula Druk Wangyel Festival started in the year 2011 and the festival takes place every year on December 13 at the Druk Wangyel Lhakhang’s Festival ground.The festival is related to important national landmarks while the date commemorates the commencement of the military expedition of 2003.
The Festival’s impressive modern Bhutanese monuments and both monuments were built as a tribute to the wise leadership of the Wangchuck dynasty in general, and the temple was built under the personal supervision of Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wanghuck, a year after she built the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens. Druk Wangyel Lhakhang was consecrated in June 2008,the wise leadership of His Majesty the Fourth King in particular, the works on the powerful mural paintings, the temple took almost four years to build.
The Dochula pass is one of the most spectacular passes in Bhutan and is about 45 minutes’ drive (22km) from the capital city, Thimphu. The pass (3080) marks the watershed between the districts of Thimphu on the western side and Punakha on the eastern side. It presents a panoramic view of these districts and some others beyond them.

One can reach Bhutan by road or air from India. Hasimara is the nearest railway station to enter Bhutan. We hired a car for the entire four days trip from Hasimara to Hasimara, which was worth 12000 INR. The distance of Jaigaon from Hasimara is about 16 km, which is nearly half an hour journey. At Phuentsholing complete all necessary steps in immigration office to get an entry permit.
Following documents are required
1. Filled application form
2. Gov. of India issued ID card with two photocopy
(better to keep Passport or voter ID)
3. Two passport size photograph
There are no charges.
For Dochula pass and Chelela pass, separate permission is required, which can be issued from Thimphu's immigration office.

National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu | Bhutan
An army truck passes the chorten. A woman crosses the road but she doesn't use the zebra crossing. Men and women can be seen in their traditional attire. Two men in traditional attire talk to each other while walking and a Maruti 800 car passes in the background.
The chorten is an extraordinary example of Buddhist architecture and artwork with its gorgeous paintings and intricate sculptures.
The chorten is a large white structure crowned with a golden spire. It is located close to the center of Thimphu city and is one of its most iconic monuments.
This large Tibetan-style chorten is one of the most visible religious structures in Thimphu, and for many Bhutanese it is the focus of their daily worship. It was built in 1974 as a memorial to the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928–72). Early morning is especially tranquil as elderly people shuffle in, and spruced-up kids on their way to school whiz in and out to pay homage.

Bhutan's Prince Dasho Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuk at morning prayer, Yangchenphug High Sch
Prince Jigyel Ugyen is the second son of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck from Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. He has an older sister, Princess Ashi Sonam Dechen Wangchuck, as well as four half-brothers and four half-sisters.
Prince Dasho Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck (born 16 July 1984) and was educated at Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School, then Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut, USA, graduating in 2003. He read history and politics at St Peter's College, Oxford, in the United Kingdom starting in 2003 and graduating in 2007.
He and his brothers share interests in various sporting activities, such as archery, basketball, golf, football and cycling.

Bumthang District is one of the 20 dzongkhag (districts) comprising Bhutan. It is the most historic dzongkhag if the number of ancient temples and sacred sites is counted. Bumthang consists of the four mountain valleys of Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor (Bumthang), although occasionally the entire district is referred to as Bumthang valley.
Bumthang directly translates as beautiful field -- thang means field or flat place, and bum is said be an abbreviation of either bumpa (a vessel for holy water, thus describing the shape and nature of the valley), or simply bum (girl, indicating this is the valley of beautiful girls). The name is said to have arisen after construction of Jambay Lhakhang.

Bhutan's early history is steeped in mythology and remains obscure. Some of the structures provide evidence that the region has been settled as early as 2000 BC. According to a legend it was ruled by a Cooch-Behar king, Sangaldip, around the 7th century BC, but not much is known prior to the introduction of Tibetan Buddhism in the 9th century, when turmoil in Tibet forced many monks to flee to Bhutan. In the 12th century, the Drukpa Kagyupa school was established and remains the dominant form of Buddhism in Bhutan today. The country's political history is intimately tied to its religious history and relations among the various monastic schools and monasteries.Bhutan is one of only a few countries which have been independent throughout their history, never conquered, occupied, or governed by an outside power (notwithstanding occasional nominal tributary status). Although there has been speculation that it was under the Kamarupa Kingdom or the Tibetan Empire in the 7th to 9th centuries, firm evidence is lacking. From the time historical records are clear, Bhutan has continuously and successfully defended its sovereignty.The consolidation of Bhutan occurred in 1616 when Ngawanag Namgyal, a lama from western Tibet known as the Zhabdrung Rinpoche, defeated three Tibetan invasions, subjugated rival religious schools, codified the Tsa Yig, an intricate and comprehensive system of law, and established himself as ruler over a system of ecclesiastical and civil administrators. After his death, infighting and civil war eroded the power of the Zhabdrung for the next 200 years. In 1885 Ugyen Wangchuck was able to consolidate power, and began cultivating closer ties with the British in the subcontinent.In 1907, Ugyen Wangchuck was elected as the hereditary ruler of Bhutan, crowned on December 17, 1907, and installed as the head of state, the Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King). In 1910, King Ugyen and the British signed the Treaty of Punakha which provided that British India would not interfere in the internal affairs of Bhutan if the country accepted external advice in its external relations. When Ugyen Wangchuck died in 1926, his son Jigme Wangchuck became ruler, and when India gained independence in 1947, the new Indian Government recognized Bhutan as an independent country. In 1949 India and Bhutan signed the Treaty of Peace and Friendship, which provided that India would not interfere in Bhutan's internal affairs, but would guide its foreign policy. Succeeded in 1952 by his son Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, Bhutan began to slowly emerge from its isolation and began a program of planned development. The National Assembly of Bhutan, the Royal Bhutanese Army, and the Royal Court of Justice were established, along with a new code of law. Bhutan became a member of the United Nations in 1971.
In 1972, Jigme Singye Wangchuck ascended the throne at age 16. He emphasized modern education, decentralization of governance, the development of hydroelectricity and tourism and improvements in rural developments. He was perhaps best known internationally for his overarching development philosophy of gross national happiness. It recognizes that there are many dimensions to development and that economic goals alone are not sufficient. Satisfied with Bhutan's transitioning democratization process, he abdicated in December 2006 rather than wait until the promulgation of the new constitution in 2008. His son, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, became King upon his abdication.

Her Majesty the Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck of Bhutan visited The Regent's School
Her Majesty the Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck is currently in Thailand and she visited The Regent’s International School, Bangkok on January 17th 2018 at the invitation of Dr. Virachai Techavijit, Chairman and Founder of the school.
During the visit Her Majesty met with the Chairman, staff and students and expressed her appreciation for the support being provided by the school to Bhutanese students.
Dr. Virachai Techavijit instituted the Queen Mother’s Scholars Programme at The Regent’s International School in 2013, which awards two full scholarships annually to deserving students from Bhutan. A decade earlier in 2004, the school initiated Global Connect Scholarships to assist Bhutanese high level public servants' children. These scholarship programmes play an important role in strengthening the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Thailand and Bhutan.
Her Majesty is the Founder and President of Tarayana Foundation, a civil society organisation that works in remote, rural villages to bring about holistic community growth and development. Tarayana is currently working in 350 remote villages in Bhutan.
The Queen Mother’s Scholars are selected by the Tarayana Foundation based both on academic performance and social work experience thus ensuring a good head and heart balance that is essential in the making of model global citizens. It is Her Majesty’s wish that the scholarship recipients will make the best of this opportunity to grow and excel academically and socially and become well-rounded, responsible and confident human beings who will contribute to a better and more peaceful world.
Her Majesty also met the Bhutanese students studying at the school and gave a very inspiring address to students, urging them to do their very best for their own country and the world they live in.
