In the very first episode of I ???? Ireland, we visit the National Museum of Ireland - Country Live in Turlough, Co. Mayo. It's not too far from Castlebar.
The museum is set on the grounds of Turlough House which is now owned by the state. As with the other branches of the National Museum of Ireland, there's no entrance fee.
We'd an interesting visit learning about rural life in Ireland. We tried on some of the clothes, sat in the world's must uncomfortable seat and found a magic door in the big house!

Turlough Park House
Visit Turlough Park House at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. This striking Victorian Gothic mansion dates to 1865 and overlooks 39 acres of Victorian gardens, parkland, woodland and ornamental lake. There are three restored rooms open to the public and admission is free. Visit museum.ie/country-life for further information.
The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life
Based in the grounds of Victorian Turlough Park House in county Mayo, the Museum of Country Life tells the story of ordinary people in rural Ireland from 1850 to 1950.
The Discover Primary Science activities at the museum focus on 'science in everyday life' through a range of tours, demonstrations and hands-on workshops for primary school children of all ages.
Topics include clothing, lighting and food production and children get to dye fabric and see how materials like sheeps wool are carded and spun into yarn.
There are also a range of nature trails and outdoor activities available and children can also learn about the work of museums and museum conservation.

The Museum of Country Life is located in Turlough village, 8 km (5.0 mi) northeast of Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. Established in 2001, the museum is part of the National Museum of Ireland and is the only national museum outside Dublin. The museum exhibits the way of life of rural Irish people between 1850 and 1950, and is in the grounds of Turlough Park House. In this weeks episode I took a trip to the National Museum of Ireland- Country Life in Castlebar County Mayo, as part of the ICAN Course that I'm doing. The ICAN (Irish Country Archive Network) is a course where I have the opportunity to research some historic topics, come up with my own take on it and then submit it to the National Archive of Ireland, it's an exciting project. They brought us to Mayo for the day, fed us, toured us and gave us a great day out. If you have a chance to visit the museum, you should, it was great!
