Pilsen Chicago | The Worlds 10 Coolest Neighborhood's Pilsen
Pilsen Chicago | The Worlds 10 Coolest Neighborhood's Pilsen. The Pilsen neighborhood is a historically working class, residential neighborhood, and gateway for immigrants coming to the City of Chicago. The area was initially settled by Czech immigrants to the United States who named the district after Plzeň, a city in what is now the Czech Republic. PILSEN — Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood is among 12 communities — and only two in the U.S. — featured in Forbes Coolest Neighborhoods Around the World list.
The list, compiled by a Forbes contributor, identifies neighborhoods in major metropolitan cities worth experiencing. Forbes emphasizes that the best way to really know a city is getting “out into the places where local life is really happening.”
The only other U.S. neighborhood recognized alongside Pilsen is Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.
Forbes contributor Ann Abel describes Pilsen as “a nest of cutting-edge culture and art” that features streets lined with galleries and walls decorated with colorful murals dating back to the 1970s.
“It’s been fostered by successive waves of Eastern European and Mexican immigrants, in addition to local artists and students, who have molded this fascinating area over the past century and a half,” the article reads.
The listing points to the National Museum of Mexican Art’s expansive art collection, which highlights the work of Mexican and Mexican-American artists, as well as the growing number of performance venues, art studios, and trendy bars “like the popular Punch House” among the neighborhood’s attractions.
Other cities included in this year’s list are Sants in Barcelona, Amsterdam Noord in Amsterdam, Getsemani in Cartagena, Maboneng in Johannesburg, Plekhanov in Tbilisi, Casco Viejo in Panama City, District 5 in Saigon, Keramikos in Athens, Seongsu-dong in Seoul, and Kalk Bay in Cape Town.

In his first solo exhibition at Reaves |Foltz Fine Art, Contemporary Texas Regionalist artist Fidencio Duran presents an outstanding group of paintings based on stories handed down through generations from his family and from his memories growing up and living in rural central Texas.
In this exhibition, Duran tells visual stories that honor the history of his family and community.
Born in Lockhart, Texas in 1961, Duran received his BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas, Austin in 1984. He is the recipient of the Clare Hart deGolyer Memorial Fund Award, the Arch M. Kimbrough Fund Award, and the Dozier Travel Grant, all through the Museum of Art, Dallas. In 2015 Duran was recognized in the Austin Arts Hall of Fame with the Austin Critics Table. He has been featured in Philadelphia Weekly, Ahora Si, Latino Magazine, among other publications.
While best-known for his tremendous narrative murals throughout the state, Duran's artwork also appears in public and private collections in the United States and abroad. His works have been exhibited by institutions from San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts; National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, IL; Amarillo Art Museum; Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin, TX; Millicent Rogers Museum, Taos, NM; to the Smithsonian Latino Center/Fundacion Oscede, Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work is included in the permanent collections of several institutions including: the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas; The Austin contemporary, Austin, Texas; The Grace Museum, Abilene, Texas; The National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago, Illinois; The Polk Museum of Art, Lakeland, Florida; The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, San Angelo, Texas; and the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, Texas, among others. Of note, Duran has the distinction of being the only artist to receive all three Dallas Museum of Art Awards to Artists.
Duran currently lives and works in Austin, Texas. One of his most prominent works, The Visit, graces the length of the ticket counter at Austin Bergstrom International Airport. His most recent mural, Following the Sun to Reach the Sky, can be viewed at Southwest Key Program in Austin, Texas, completed in the Fall of 2017.

Sergio Gomez Artist Talk at the Zhou B Art Center [solo exhibition]
It Feels Like I Was Already Here. Sergio Gomez Solo Exhibition
In It Feels Like I Was Already Here, Gomez presents his largest solo exhibition to date featuring painting and drawing works at the Zhou B Art Center where Sergio first established his studio and currently is curator and Director of Exhibitions.
“When first entering an exhibit of Sergio’s work, it is experienced that the temporal world is his mental metaphor. The embodied qualities of visual language are there for broader interpretation and encouragement for the viewer. There, the artist enlists participation with the mysterious transcendental journey” Laura Frazier.
It Feels Like I Was Already Here combines Gomez’s figurative abstraction paintings often reflecting on the human condition along with large-scale charcoal drawings exploring social issues such as immigration, poverty and the environment. Gomez’s richly worked surfaces tracing the essence or impression of personhood provide a visual reminder of our corporal presence while evoking a sense of spiritual transcendence.
This exhibition presents Gomez as both an artist and curator simultaneously. His career for the last 11 years has been closely associated with the rise of the art community in Chicago’s south side. Starting with Bridgeport Third Fridays, which Sergio established for the first time in November of 2004, to his many curatorial exhibitions that bring hundreds of visitors to the Zhou B Art Center each month, Gomez continues to push art forward in Chicago and abroad. He is also known for his entrepreneurial spirit and his continued efforts to build a sense of community wherever he goes.
“Sergio Gomez has played an important role in the development of the Zhou B Art Center. The Center started from nothing, bare bones to one of the most important art institutions and Sergio was instrumental in this development. He came in with a belief and the vision of what the Zhou B Art Center could and would be. He is the Director of exhibitions at the Zhou B Art Center and has curated hundreds of important shows, among them is the National Wet Paint MFA show and the Self Portrait show. He is a dedicated artist and sets an inspirational example for many young, aspiring and established artists through cultivation of his dedication, passion and love for art.” Zhou Brothers.

The Latin American & Latino Studies Program at UIC is proud to be celebrating 40 years of academic achievement and community advocacy. None of this would have been possible without the student activism that took place in the early 1970's throughout high schools and university campuses across the United States. The struggle that it took to create the Latin American & Latino Studies program at UIC is a struggle that built bridges among different ethnic and community groups and continues to prevail. Join us as we celebrate the legacy of these students and congratulate the visionaries who continue to advocate for programs like Latino Studies in higher education today. We kick off the celebration on October 29 with a fundraiser for the newly established LALS Student Scholarship Fund at the National Museum of Mexican Art with the event From Vision to Legacy featuring music and presentations on the history and future vision of LALS. Chicago: Origins and Vistas of a Mexican City
Mauricio Tenorio
Professor, Department of History

Postdoctoral Scholar, Department of History
It may be an exaggeration to say that Chicago is today one of the largest Mexican cities, but not untrue. There are an estimated 1.3 million Mexicans/Mexican-Americans residing in the Chicago metropolitan area. With large populations of Mexicans historically living in the American west and southwest why is it that by 1920 nearly 16,000 Mexicans called Chicago, a cold and far away city, their new home? The origins of Mexican Chicago are at the roots of the 20th-century's de facto economic and demographic integration between the U.S. and Mexico, and the so-called Mexican problem in 20th-century United States. It was in Chicago where, through the pioneering studies by University of Chicago sociologists, Mexican immigration was scientifically, and strategically, defined both as a problem and not as a problem. This session will provide historic insights on this fascinating interaction among immigrants, social organizations, and social scientists in Chicago in the 1920s and 1930s. And it will jump to the present to provide vistas of the input of the Mexican presence in the architectonical landscape of Chicago, the architectonical city par excellence. This session is co-sponsored by the Latino Affinity Network.

Chicago is also the home of the largest Mexican population in the U.S. outside of the Southwest. Hispanic immigrants were initially lured by industrial jobs to the windy city, but now the largely second and third generation Hispanic community in Chicago show enormous economic and political clout.
