The 51,000 square foot building with its Idaho quartzite façade was inspired by the ruins of Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and echoes the hillside behind the facility. Located on a bluff called East Gros Ventre Butte in the midst of a real wildlife habitat, the institution overlooks the National Elk Refuge and is situated 2.5 miles north of the town of Jackson. The core of the collections reflects traditional and contemporary realism. The museum's centerpiece is a collection of works by Carl Rungius (1869-1959) and Bob Kuhn (1920-2007). In addition to 14 galleries, the museum has a sculpture trail, museum shop, restaurant, children's discovery gallery, and library. More than 80,000 people visit every year, and over 10,000 children visit the museum each year, often as part of their school curricula. (Wikipedia)

Featuring prominent artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, Robert Kuhn, John James Audubon, and Carl Rungius, the unsurpassed permanent collection chronicles much of the history of wildlife in art from 2500 B.C. to the present. Complementing Karl Bodmer's original sketches of western wildlife from the Joslyn Art Museum (view the online exhibit from the Joslyn through August 29, 2010), the Museum features a selection of his amazing etchings from its own collection of prints from Travels in the Interior of North America:.
A record of Prince Maximilian's scientific observations illustrated with etchings by Bodmer, Travels premiered in Europe between 1839 and 1843 and was among the first publications to showcase the American West. Including portraits of Native Americans, landscapes, and wildlife, the selections from the book featured in this exhibit display the diversity of subjects Bodmer encountered on his expedition with Prince Maximilian up the Missouri River from 1832 -- 1834.

This video was created for National Geographic's Intelligent Travel blog. It features an interview with Dr. Adam D. Harris, curator of art at the National Wildlife Art Museum in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
The museum features a collection of more than 5,000 works of art by the finest wildlife artists in the United States and Europe, ranging from Rembrandt to Warhol. Visitors leave understanding the different ways wildlife has been portrayed by artists over the past c. 350 years.
Many of the animals in the museum can be seen in the wild in Jackson Hole and its neighboring national parks, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.

We are back in Jackson for a week or so and so you get a different season. Check out our other video shot in Winter and in 360VR. That was a fun one but cold. Now you get to see what it's like in spring after (most of) the snow has melted. We start downtown at the town square with the famous antler arches and make our way past the fair grounds and library and Fish Creek. I also point out several hotels and lodges and other accommodations as I go through town .

Jackson is a small city in the Jackson Hole valley of Teton County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,577 at the 2010 census, up from 8,647 in 2000. It is the county seat of Teton County and is its largest town.
Jackson is the principal town of the Jackson, WY-ID Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Teton County in Wyoming and Teton County in Idaho.
The town derives its name from Jackson Hole, the valley in which it is located.
The town gained significant fame when a livestream of the town square went viral on YouTube in 2016, leading to much fascination with the town's elk antler arch, its law enforcement, and its prevalence of red trucks.

* Snow King Mountain Resort: The first ski resort in Jackson and is significantly cheaper than Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Even though Snow King is cheaper it is still quite a challenging hill. This resort is located on the Southeast edge of town.
* Grand Targhee Resort: About an hour away, 42 miles, on the west side of the Teton Range in Alta, opened in 1969, it is accessed through Idaho over Teton Pass.
* National Museum of Wildlife Art: Overlooking the National Elk Refuge is the National Museum of Wildlife Art which shows and preserves many wildlife artworks. Along with pieces inside of the museum, there is a ¾ mile trail with many sculptures along it.
* Grand Teton Music Festival: This is a seven-week classical music festival held every summer in the town of Jackson.
* Center for the Arts: The center was founded in 1991 to help support an artist culture within the town. Construction of the facility was completed in 2007, and today Center for the Arts, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and 78,000 square foot campus, serves all of Jackson Hole and the surrounding region by pursuing its dedicated mission within the walls of our creative campus.
* Elkfest: The annual Jackson Hole Elk Antler Auction occurs each spring. At this event, members of the Boy Scouts of America help sell all the antlers collected on the nearby National Elk Refuge. Profits go to help the local Boy Scouts and the refuge.

ABCs of Jackson Hole: Chief Washakie
Chief Washakie was a popular Shoshone leader. In his early life he worked as a trapper alongside Jim Bridger, and participated in raids against the Blackfeet in Montana. His early career allowed him to become a welcome liasion between the Shoshone and incoming Western immigrants. He was instrumental in the creation of the Fort Bridger Treaty which created the Wind River Reservation. Another City Walk using the GoPro Fusion 360 Camera. This time we walk through the little city of Jackson Wyoming. We pass the famous antler arches in the town square and go to the Gaslight Alley through downtown (past a stuffed moose) and a residential neighborhood to the Snow King ski resort and mountain followed by the performing arts pavillion and ending up back down town.
