National Music Museum music by Tom Wolfe and Gene Bertoncini

Floating on the Silence
Tom Wolfe's debut recording under his own name is a reunion of with his old teacher, jazz guitar master Gene Bertoncini. Wolfe, who was a graduate student under Bertoncini, has long since become a music educator, but this delightful duo guitar session occurred during an off day while they touring together. The result is a recording that should be considered essential for guitar students and jazz fans alike. From the first track to the last, both men are listening to one another, fluidly moving between playing lead and comping, playing beautiful variations of each piece while never losing sight of the melody. The music draws mostly from standards, bossa novas and famous jazz compositions, though Bertoncini contributed the lovely, bittersweet ballad For Chet and Wolfe the pensive A Moment Alone. All the tracks are enjoyable, but the festive setting of Dizzy Gillespie's Con Alma produces the most fireworks. The only oversight is the (most likely accidental) omission of credit to the recording engineer, who did a brilliant job in capturing the essence of the duo's playing. Rating: StarStarStarStar

The National Music Museum (NMM) was founded on the campus of The University of South Dakota on July 1, 1973. It is housed in a lovingly restored Carnegie library building, built in 1910.
The NMM's renowned collections of more than 15,000 American, European, and non-Western instruments are the most inclusive in the world, making the NMM the premier institution of its kind. Included are many of the earliest, best preserved, and historically most important musical instruments known to survive. State-of-the-art, self-guided multi-media tours allow visitors not only to see and hear many of the instruments, but also to learn more about them through curatorial commentary and videos.
The NMM is the only place in the world where one can find two 18th-century grand pianos with the type of action conceived by the piano's inventor, Bartolomeo Cristofori. One, built in 1767 by Manuel Antunes of Lisbon, is the earliest signed and dated piano by a Portuguese maker; the other, built by Louis Bas in Villeneuve lès Avignon in 1781, is the earliest extant French grand piano.
Other extraordinary keyboards include both a Neapolitan virginal and harpsichord (ca. 1530-1535), three 17th-century Flemish harpsichords (two by Andreas Ruckers), 17th- and 18th-century English, German, Portuguese, and French harpsichords, and German and Swedish clavichords.
The NMM's holdings of 17th- and 18th-century Dutch woodwind instruments by such makers as Richard Haka, Hendrik Richters, Philip Borkens, Abraham van Aardenberg, Jan Juriaensz van Heerde, and Jan Steenbergen, are unique outside of The Netherlands.
The NMM's holdings by 17th- and 18th-century Nürnberg makers, including members of the Denner, Ehe, Haas, Oberlender, and Steinmetz families, as well as Ernst Busch, Paul Hainlein, Johann Benedikt Gahn, Johann Carl Kodisch, Leonhard Maussiel, Michael Nagel, and Paulus Schmidt, are unique outside of Germany.

'Per dolor mi bagno il viso'
From Andrea Antico's keyboard music print Frottole Intabulate, Rome 1517.
This concert excerpt is part of the first public performance on the Renaissance harpsichord after being restored and brought back to its original state.
This Neapolitan harpsichord is thought to be the oldest - and best preserved - harpsichord in fully playable condition (c.1525). Its builder's name is not identified, although he has been recognized as the same author of an instrument housed at the Castello Sforzesco's collection in Milan.
Andrea Antico's 'Frottole Intabulate' is the first print of keyboard music ever published in Italy. It contains keyboard arrangements of 26 vocal compositions by Bartolomeo Tromboncino (1470 - c.1534) and Marchetto Cara (c.1465 - 1525). They are characterized by their vocal quality and elegance.

Dakota Pathways: Blackboards and Computers
Dakota Pathways: A History was a 20-part series used by Educator's across South Dakota for use in their classrooms. The 14 minute long segments explore some of the history of South Dakota. Blackboards and Computers is the 11th segment produced in the series.
We have seen many changes in our education system over the last one hundred and forty five years. Expectations, rules, and regulations have changed for both the students and the teachers.
My grandfather, Emil, completed the eighth grade. He wasn't expected to receive a high school diploma. According to my great-grandparents and tradition, his place was in the field. His parents depended on him to help support the family. My grandmother, Clara, also finished the eighth grade. Like my grandfather's parents, her parents felt a high school diploma was unnecessary and inconvenient. They lived in the country and the closest high school was too far to walk. She was expected to help run the house and take care of her brothers and sisters.
One of the conditions my grandparents commented on was the grueling walk to school. They commented how they had to walk miles across open fields and dirt roads to school in what seemed like 5 feet of snow. They also claimed that the walk home felt like it was uphill even though it wasn't. It may have seemed like a long walk because the schools were located across the country side and students were expected to walk two to three miles along the edge of a dirt road or across a grassy field. There were no bike trails or cement sidewalks. A three mile walk is a long distance to travel by today's standards. I find myself driving two blocks to the store to get a gallon of milk.
Expectations and conditions for teachers were also very different if you compare them to today's standards. Below you will find a few of the Dakota Territory Teacher Rules of 1872.
1. Teachers each day will fill lamps, and clean chimneys.
2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session. (scuttle -- deep bucket for carrying coal)
3. Men teachers may take one evening a week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.
4. After ten hours in school, the teacher may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.
5. Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed.
6. The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.
(Dakota Territorial Museum, Yankton, SD)
The education of students has continually changed over the years. Changes like mainstreaming, consolidation, entrance exams and education initiatives have increased the educational success of both students and teachers. The increased expectations and standards are the driving forces that continue to make our education system great.
