Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Big cafeterias at the right of Apostolou Pavlou street have the best view in Athens. It is a very trendy area for drinking you coffee or having a snack. It is ideal during summer nights. The area is open and the summer night breeze cools down the regular customers.
Apostolou Paulou street. The numerous cafeterias continue until the road becomes quite uphill. The area lacks any building and is mysterious how it survived from being exploited all these decades. At the far right you will see the old National Observatory of Athens. It is an indication that the place was scarcely populated in the past, ideal for night observations. Nowadays does not operate due to the immense inevitable city light pollution. Follow the Apostolou Pavlou uphill and you will reach at the right the entrance to Acropolis and Parthenon.

Athens Travel Guide - Greece Magical Moments
Athens Travel Guide - Greece Magical Moments
Athens is the capital city of Greece. It is in many ways the birthplace of Classical Greece, and therefore of Western civilization. The design of the city is marked by Ottoman, Byzantine and Roman civilizations. Today, greater Athens is by far the economic, political and cultural center of modern Greece, with nearly half of the country's population.
The sprawling city is bounded on three sides by Mt Ymettos, Mt Parnitha and Mt Pendeli; whilst inside Athens are twelve hills [the seven historical ones are: Acropolis, Areopagus, Hill of Philopappus, Observatory Hill (Muses Hill), Pnyx, Lykavittos (Lycabettus), Tourkovounia (Anchesmus)], the Acropolis and Lykavittos being the most prominent.
Places of interest to travelers can be found within a relatively small area surrounding the city centre at Syntagma Square (Plateia Syntagmatos). This epicentre is surrounded by the districts of the Plaka to the south, Monastiraki and Thissio to the west, Kolonaki to the northeast and Omonia to the northwest.
The Acropolis— The ancient high city of Athens, crowned by marble temples sacred to the city's goddess Athena.
Plaka, Monastiraki and Thissio— Charming historic districts at the foot of the Acropolis, with restored 19th century neoclassical homes.
Kolonaki— Upscale residential area northeast of Syntagma with many cafes, boutiques and galleries.
Metaxourgeio—The district of Metaxourgeio, located northwest of Psiri, has become a bohemian enclave as well as a haven for art and culture. As part of the area's continual transformation, the principal gallery of the city, The Municipal Gallery, was relocated in October 2010 to Avdi Square, which is the main square of the area.
Omonia— Commercial area with a busy metro and one of the city's main hubs. Seedy in parts.
Exarcheia— Bohemian area and home to Greece's students, anarchists, artists and intellectuals, as well as the celebrated National Archaeological Museum.
Pangrati and Mets— These adjoining pleasant residential neighborhoods south of Lycabettos and east of the National Garden.
Psiri— Former industrial district located north of Monastiraki, now full of trendy and alternative restaurants, cafés, bars, small luxury hotels and shops.
Syntagma Square (Plateia Syntagmatos)— Dominated by the old Royal Palace which serves today as the Parliament building, Syntagma Square is the business district of Athens.
Kifissia— Suburb at the northern terminus of Line 1 (Green), known for its high-end shopping.
Nea Smyrni— Suburb about 5 km south of downtown Athens, known as a modern European district.
Piraeus— The ancient port six miles southwest of Athens city centre, Piraeus is known today as one of the biggest ports in Europe, serves most of Athens passenger connections to Crete and the Aegean Islands.
Zografou— Suburb 5 km east of downtown Athens on the slopes of Imitos, known for the many university (NTUA) buildings and several quirky bars and taverns sprinkled about.
Athens Riviera— Some call it the *Copacabana of Europe*, the coastline of Athens southeast suburbs with lots of nice beaches, sea promenades, marinas and night clubs, starting from the Flisvos Marina and streching all the way to the suburb of Varkiza. During the summer season it becomes the heart of the city's tourism and night life.
Glyfada— Suburb in south Athens district connected by tram. Glyfada (Pronounced GLI'FADA) combines shopping with many small cafés and restaurants. Located along the ocean and sports some beaches and beach bars.

DIALOGUES: Astronomy
On Tuesday, November 27, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) monthly DIALOGUES series celebrated its one-year anniversary. A discussion on astronomy at the Eugenides Foundation’s New Digital Planetarium took the audience on a magical journey around the universe and across the stars, with the help of scientists and amateur astronomers.
This 12th installment of the DIALOGUES series marked the beginning of a new era in which DIALOGUES travelled near and far, within Greece and abroad, embracing new cities and new venues. During the event, we connected live with the Visitors Center of the National Observatory of Athens in Thissio and the Municipal Library of Prespa, where amateur astronomers and lovers of the stars watched a livestream of the event and actively participated in the discussion.
In their first “journey,” the DIALOGUES reached other neighborhoods around Athens, as well as Thessaloniki, with live broadcasts that took place in schools participating in the “Open Schools” program of the Municipality of Athens and the “Open Schools in the Neighborhood” program of the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
The DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.

Mythology and Contemporary Astronomy of Ursa Major | Fiori - Anastasia Metallinou | TEDxAUEB
UrsaMajor is one of the brightest and most impressive constellations in the night sky. As it is continuously visible from the northen hemisphere of our planet, it is characterized as a circumpolar constellation and it is also associated with the Greek mythology of nymph Calisto. From antiquity, Ursa Major along with Ursa Minor were observed from the travelers and especially the sailors for their orientation during their journeys. These constellations have been mentioned in Homer’s epics, in posterior poetry for the description of Greek mythology, as well as in astronomy for the understanding of our orientation on the Earth.
Based on Ptolemy's astronomical work Almagest, which describes 48 constellations’ names from the Greek mythology, contemporary maps of the sky have been created, which include 88 constellations’ formations in both North and South hemispheres.
References of both Ursa Minor and Ursa Major can be also used in astronomy and astrophysics for the observation of double star systems, supernovae stars, spiral and elliptical galaxies, active galaxy centers and exoplanets, whose research is of great importance for astrophysicists.
Dr. Phiori – Anastasia Metallinou works at the National Observatory of Athens. She is responsible for Science Communication at the Visitor Center of Thiseio. She holds a Bachelor of Physics degree and a postgraduate degree in Atmospheric Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In her Doctoral Thesis she dealt with the “Development and Deterioration of Magnetic Storms in the Geodesy”. She has worked with the Center d’étude des Environnements Terrestre et Planetaires in Paris, Heliophysics Science Division, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, USA and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Laboratory of Computational Systems, National Technical University of Athens Technical University. After completing her doctoral thesis, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing of NCA. Her research background relates to simulating the acceleration of charged particles in the Earth’s magnetosphere during magnetic storms.
She has a degree in monody. It lectures and writes in order to facilitate students and the public to understand Astronomy and Space Physics. It uses sound and music as a means of communicating and teaching astronomy. She organizes and participates in evenings that combine Music with Poetry and Astronomy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
