Welcome to the National Theatre
Take a look behind the scenes at the National Theatre, and find out who and what it takes to make a production for one of our three stages.
This film was made as part of the National Theatre’s Let’s Play programme, our first national programme for primary schools. Let’s Play supports schools to make extraordinary theatre with their pupils by providing newly commissioned plays for children to perform, alongside training and learning resources for teachers that enables them to involve children in all aspects of theatre making.

Sights and Sounds of London, UK (Bridge Street to Westminster Bridge Morning Walk)
Westminster Bridge lies on the Thames between the Houses of Parliament and County Hall with the delights of the Southbank Centre and the National Theatre beyond. The view is exceptional in every direction, taking in Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Whitehall, the Strand, South Bank and beyond that the City and the London Eye. Take to the bridge for a sight that moved William Wordsworth to write these lines in 1802: Earth has not anything to show more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by A sight so touching in its majesty.Description

Getting Better Slowly - National Theatre Tour
Adam Pownall woke up to find his body was slowly shutting down. Unable to walk, talk or blink and nobody knew why…
When Guillain Barré Syndrome affected Adam it caused full paralysis within days. Getting Better Slowly tells the story of his illness through a creative collision of new writing, verbatim accounts, sound and movement. How does it feel when your closest relationship is with the illness that’s holding you back? Adam’s frank and moving account of how he dealt with GBS and the two years he spent recovering – including months spent learning how to walk and talk again – explores the relationship we all have with our bodies and our health. Telling his story with warmth, humour and honesty, and explaining how GBS is still part of his life, he invites audiences to consider how they would deal with an unexpected illness or accident affecting them or someone they love.

England, race and football fans | Death of England by Roy Williams and Clint Dyer
A family in mourning. A man in crisis. Death of England by Roy Williams and Clint Dyer at the National Theatre:
31 Jan - 7 Mar 2020
Rafe Spall performs an extract from Death of England in rehearsals at the National Theatre.
--
After the death of his dad, Michael is powerless and angry. In a state of heartbreak, he confronts the difficult truths about his father’s legacy and the country that shaped him. At the funeral, unannounced and unprepared, Michael decides it is time to speak.
Rafe Spall (Hedda Gabler, Black Mirror) performs this fearless one-person play which asks explosive and enduring questions about identity, race and class in Britain.
It is written for him by Roy Williams (Sucker Punch, Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads) and Clint Dyer (The Happy Tragedy of Being Woke), who becomes the first black British artist to have performed, written and directed a full-scale production at the National Theatre.

National Theatre London - Things to Do in London
Writing down a plan for the places to visit in London and the things to do might sound easy but when one comes to the actual phase, he/she realizes that it is actually a hard one, not for having nothing to see of course, but for having lots of things to choose from.
The National Theatre of London is there to serve all the visitors of London with a different experience which they will keep remembering until the end of time. At the National Theatre of London, world class theatre that is entertaining, challenging and inspiring is there served for every single person in order to give him/her something different to attend and watch.
In this theatre, there are more than 20 productions every single year in the South Bank home and this happens with collaborating with hundreds of artists to bring lots of things that would suit the widest audience possible. There are plays, musicals, re-imagined classics and even work for young audiences which people could choose from.
The National Threatre of London is following one main goal which is to be as diverse, open, collaborative and as national as possible because the shows are seen in a tour throughout UK and even internationally and it is sometimes delivered through NT live which broadcasts some of the best British theatre to over 2,000 venues in 60 countries around the world. This is actually interesting to be attended in real and that is why it is a good idea to consider booking your place during your visit to London.
This place is not just for those who want to get entertained, but it is also a good place for those who want to learn something since it offers this chance for the visitors looking forward to such thing. There are different events and workshops offered for people of all ages.
Maybe for a visitor coming to London for just a few days to explore this historical city and know more about its history, the focus would be on watching something meaningful telling them much about the city, and not on the things and workshops that people could attend to learn something at - so never worry about learning something there, but try to find the time to at least attend any show before going back home.
Just make sure to check the shows that will be played during your stay in London in order to find something that would suit your taste because unfortunately you might find yourself not interested in those that are going to be played during the period of your stay.
There are lots of things to be seen in London and this will always depend on the interests of the person going to visit the city, of course that would be apart from all the historical sites that are found there. From the top touristic attractions in London, of course you will visit the Houses of Parliament which Big Ben is part of or at least come to check from the outside if you don't want to enter or don't have the time to do so (
In addition to the Houses of Parliament of London, there is also the famous Buckingham Palace where people go to check the change of the guards ( there is also London Eye that provides people with great views over the city ( there is Churchill War Rooms which is not as famous as lots of other places but which still carries its importance and is actually a great place to go to and know more about the secrets of Churchill and the Second World War ( and there is also the famous HMS Belfast which is now found in London and which tells the history of that old time (
The National Theatre of London is not just about the shows that one gets to attend inside, but there are three restaurants, bars, bookshop, theatre tours and more, all at the South Bank home. The National Theatre is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:30 AM to 11:00 PM, so you could visit the place during these hours only.
If you are still wondering about the places that you could get the chance to visit in London while you are there, you could consider the different parks that are scattered all around the city ( you could visit a place that is fun with the kids and which is M&M's World with its games and toys ( there is also the Camden Town Market that has been there for a long period of time and yet people forget about checking it while they are in the city ( and lots of other places and ideas that one could come up with anytime during the day.
Have you ever attended anything at the National Theatre in London? Share your experience with us and if you haven't then tell us about the shows you want to visit.

Everyone knows London. The red double-deckers, the black taxis, the red phone booths, the red brick buildings, the guards with the bearskin fur caps are well known by even those, who have never been to the English capital. There are the legendary buildings: the clock-tower of the Parliament, the Big Ben, the Saint Paul Cathedral, the residence of the Queen, the Buckingham Palace, the Westminster, the Tower and the famous bridge, the Tower, the Waterloo and the London bridge are all known from the pages of history books and literary pieces. There are incredibly lots of things to see, there is the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Trafalgar Square, the Piccadilly Circus, the famous parks, the St. James and the Hyde, the rebuilt Globe Theatre, the Madame Tussaud’s, the Sherlock Holmes Museum, and the new pride of the city, the London Eye… Not to mention the busy cultural life, the theatres, the restaurants of the Soho and Covent Garden, and the uncountable number of pubs, where in the old days Shakespeare, Dickens or Churchill had their beers.

National Theatre War Horse Trailer
The National Theatre's acclaimed production of War Horse, will begin a major tour of the UK next year including a 4 -week run at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham from 14 March - 7 April 2018.
Tickets will go on sale at 9am on Monday 8 February 2016 at trch.co.uk or by calling the Box Office on 0115 989 5555
The tour of War Horse coincides with the Centenary commemorations of the end of the First World War and follows the production's enormously successful tour of the UK and Ireland in 2013-2014.
War Horse, which has been seen by over seven million people worldwide, completes its record-breaking eight year London run at the New London Theatre on 12 March 2016. It has won 25 awards including the Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway. Directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, Nick Stafford's adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's remarkable story of courage, loyalty and friendship, about a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey, set against the backdrop of the First World War is the most successful play in the National Theatre's history. It features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping horses to live on stage.
War Horse received its world premiere on 9 October 2007 at the National Theatre, where it played for two seasons before opening at the New London Theatre in March 2009. Since then, War Horse has been seen in 97 cities in 10 countries, including productions on Broadway, in Toronto and Berlin, with touring productions in the UK and Ireland, North America, the Netherlands and Belgium. A Chinese-language production opened in Beijing last year, and is currently running in Shanghai.
Michael Morpurgo said: 'After a few months rest, out at pasture, Joey, the War Horse and his great team from the National Theatre, will be touring the UK again, from 2017 through to 2018 and the centenary of the end of the First World War, taking their show all over the country, to towns and cities, many of them places War Horse has not been seen before. I am so pleased this is happening; that so many more people will have the chance to enjoy this unique theatrical event. Steady boy, steady Joey. Trot on!'
War Horse is directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, designed by Rae Smith, with puppet direction, design and fabrication by Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler for Handspring Puppet Company, lighting by Paule Constable, and movement and horse choreography by Toby Sedgwick, with video design by Leo Warner and Mark Grimmer for 59 Productions, songmaker John Tams, music by Adrian Sutton and sound by Christopher Shutt.
War Horse is produced on tour by the National Theatre.

SUMMARY
=======
The Royal National Theatre in London, commonly known as the National Theatre (NT), is one of the United Kingdom's three most prominent publicly funded performing arts venues, alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House. Internationally, it is known as the National Theatre of Great Britain. From its foundation in 1963 until 1976, the company was based at the Old Vic theatre in Waterloo. The current building is located next to the Thames in the South Bank area of central London. In addition to performances at the National Theatre building, the National Theatre tours productions at theatres across the United Kingdom.Permission to add the Royal prefix to the name of the theatre was given in 1988, but the full title is rarely used. The theatre presents a varied programme, including Shakespeare, other international classic drama, and new plays by contemporary playwrights. Each auditorium in the theatre can run up to three shows in repertoire, thus further widening the number of plays which can be put on during any one season.
In June 2009, the theatre began National Theatre Live (NT Live), a programme of simulcasts of live productions to cinemas, first in the United Kingdom and then internationally. The programme began with a production of Phèdre, starring Helen Mirren, which was screened live in 70 cinemas across the UK. NT Live productions have since been broadcast to over 2,500 venues in 60 countries around the world.
The NT had an annual turnover of approximately £105 million in 2015–16, of which earned income made up 75% (58% from ticket sales, 5% from NT Live and Digital, and 12% from commercial revenue such as in the restaurants, bookshops, etc.). Support from Arts Council England provided 17% of income, 1% from Learning and Participation activity, and the remaining 9% came from a mixture of companies, individuals, trusts and foundations.
