July 1, 2011: March past of units from the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) following the memorial ceremony at the National War Memorial on Water Street. Lt. Governor John Crosbie takes the salute. The band performs the official march of the Regiment The Banks of the Newfoundland for most of the march past.
July 1 is Memorial day in Newfoundland and Labrador in order to remember the bloody losses sustained by the Newfoundland Regiment during the Battle of the Somme (1916, near the French village of Beaumont Hamel) and WWI in general.

The Newfoundland Memorial Park is a large area of preserved World War One trenches close to Beaumont Hamel, France.
Both British/Canadian and German front lines are beautifully and respectfully preserved in this unique park on the Somme. Within the park are several Division Memorials and three Commonwealth (CWGC) cemteries.
The Newfoundland Memorial Park is a tribute to the Newfounders who died or were injured in World War One but in particular for the Newfoundlanders who died at this location on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916.
So far as can be ascertained, 22 officers and 758 other ranks were directly involved in the advance. Of these, all the officers and slightly under 658 other ranks became casualties, but exact figures are not available as casualties were reported for the day as a whole. Of the 780 men who went forward only about 110 survived unscathed, of whom only sixty eight were available for roll call the following day. The Battalion's War Diary on July 7 states that on July 1 the overall casualties for the Battalion were 14 officers and 296 other ranks killed, died of wounds or missing believed killed, and that 12 officers and 362 other ranks were wounded, a total of 684 all ranks out of a fighting strength of about 929. About 14 of the wounded subsequently died from their wounds. (Source: Please take a look at Video History Today )

Here is the full parade that was held on Remembrance Day in St. John's. A great day and lot's of people turned up to celebrate the day. It is great to see so many people remembering those who helped fight for our freedom. Way to go Newfoundland!

2012 marked the 96th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel. Short service and parade groups assemble at the Sergeant's Memorial, New Gower St. Royal Newfoundland Regiment, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, RCMP, Regiment Band, Nurses from St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, Grace Hospital, General Hospital. Then marching to the National War Memorial on Water St. for wreath laying ceremony. Having visited the battlefield at Newfoundland Park in Beaumont-Hamel, France in the summer of 2013, I'll not be missing this ceremony again. Newfoundland and Labrador Memorial Day Parade 2016
Scenes from the NL Memorial Day ceremonies, July 1, 2016, St. John's. The crowd at the war memorial was quite thick, so I apologize for not getting any footage of that event. The larger size of this year's ceremonies was due to it being the 100th anniversary of the destruction of the Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont Hamel in France. The regiment's honorary colonel-in-chief, Princess Anne, was in the province to view the ceremonies.
Following the march past at the courthouse, another military ceremony was held at The Rooms to officially open the museum's new WWI exhibit.
