Vlog: Roadschool field trip to Natural Bridge State Park in Virginia
We ventured out to a local Virginia State Park, Natural Bridge State Park. It was a beautiful hot day outside, so we packed a picnic and went for a drive up there. It was a long and winding road, and Emmett got car sick! But we made it, and it was fun. It was a bit spendy, $8 per adult and $6 per child over 5, but it was nice. The Natural Bridge was cool, its 215 foot tall bridge that covers an eroded river bottom. After that we hiked a bit and saw a Monocan exhibit, then about another mile to a cool waterfall. The day was nice, and we added another sticker to the RV!

KOA Campground near Natural Bridge Virginia. We stayed at this campground for three nights as our first stop on our summer vacation. While hear we visited Lexington VA and Natural Bridge State Park. This was a fine Campground and I would stay here again without a doubt. Although the Campground is very hilly the sights are level and were easy to get in and out of. The Campground was also easy to find since it was right off Interstate 81.

Natural Bridge - Wisconsin attraction
this sandstone bridge formation is located in Natural Bridge State Park in Wisconsin... video and pictures shot with Galaxy S4... it's all i had on me...
Natural Bridge State Park is a 530-acre (214 ha) state park of Wisconsin, United States, featuring Wisconsin's largest natural arch. Directly beneath the arch is the Raddatz Rockshelter, a rock shelter once used by Paleo-Indians and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park is located southwest of Baraboo between the unincorporated communities of Leland and Denzer, in the town of Honey Creek.
The park is on the edge of the Baraboo Range in an unglaciated Driftless Area of south-central Wisconsin. Outcrops of sandstone deposited 1.6 billion years ago jut out of the tops of these hills.
The arch and rock shelter have been weathered out of one such outcropping. The top of the arch is 35 feet (11 m) above the ground. The arch opening is 25 feet (7.6 m) wide and 15 feet (4.6 m) high. The rock shelter is 60 feet (18 m) wide and 30 feet (9.1 m) deep.
The park's hills are forested with oak and other hardwoods. Some ridge tops bear small prairie remnants with grasses and cactus. Around the outcrop walls grow ferns such as the walking fern (Asplenium rhizophyllum), slender lip fern (Cheilanthes feei) and the rare purple cliffbrake (Pellaea atropurpurea). The shade of the rock faces also supports Solidago sciaphila, a rare goldenrod.
An archaeological excavation of the rock shelter was conducted in 1957 by Warren L. Wittry of the Wisconsin Historical Society. His team found evidence of human use over a long time period. The remains of 50 vertebrate and 15 mollusc species were identified. The oldest artifacts were pieces of charred wood, presumably from fire pits, which were dated to between 9000 and 8000 BCE. This would make it the oldest documented site of human occupation in the upper Midwest.[2] There were also artifacts such as antler-scrapers dating back to six to seven thousand years ago. Evidence indicates that the shelter was used only periodically at first, perhaps as a hunting or seasonal camp. Later it was inhabited year-round.
The natural bridge has been a tourist attraction for modern visitors since 1870. The state park was established in 1972, and the following year 60 acres (24 ha) centered on the arch were given a further level of protection as Natural Bridge and Rockshelter State Natural Area. In 1978 the Raddatz Rockshelter was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Natural Bridge State Park is open year-round but unstaffed. Visitors needing a parking pass for their vehicle must purchase one from a self-registration stand. Amenities at the park are limited to picnic tables and restrooms. There is no overnight camping.
There are two trails in the park, totalling about 3.5 miles (5.6 km). The arch and rock shelter are short distance up the Indian Moccasin Nature Trail, which then loops further through the wooded hills. Signs along the trail interpret the medicinal uses of many native plants. The longer Whitetail Hiking Trail leads across the highway to the less-used southern half of the park.
The southern portion of the park is open for hunting during parts of autumn.

Exploring Mark Cline's Foamhenge in Natural Bridge, Virginia
This is a video I put together on a hike while exploring Mark Cline's Foamhenge in Natural Bridge, Virginia on 3/5/16
Foamhenge is a full-size replica of Stonehenge made entirely out of styrofoam in Natural Bridge, Virginia. The structure was created by Mark Cline of Enchanted Castle Studio in 2004, with the pieces in astronomically correct positions. FYI: Foamhenge has been relocated to Centreville, Virginia in 2017. The Natural Bridge became a state park in 2016, forcing Foamhenge to close. The structure was dismantled on August 30, 2016 and placed in storage at Cline's studio. After receiving over fifty inquiries from across the United States, an agreement was made to relocate Foamhenge to Cox Farms, a popular, 116-acre family farm, near Centreville, VA, a suburb of Washington, D.C. The pieces are planned to be refurbished, repaired or replaced before re-installation. Foamhenge is scheduled to debut at Cox Farms in 2017, by the start of the farm's 'Fall Festival' in September.
The High Bridge
We took advantage of the perfect Spring weather to combine a motorcycle ride and some drone flying. Leaving Richmond, we headed out to Farmville to check out the High Bridge – an old train trestle spanning the Appomattox River. The historic structure has been converted into a pedestrian bridge allowing for fantastic views of the river and the surrounding forests.
We were lucky to come on a weekday so there only a few other visitors (most of which make an appearance in the video). On weekends, the trail is popular for hikers, bicyclists and even folks with their horses.
The majestic High Bridge, which is more than 2,400 feet long and 160 feet above the Appomattox River is the centerpiece of High Bridge State Park. The park, located outside Farmville, Virginia is a multi-use trail ideally suited for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. It is the longest recreational bridge in Virginia and among the longest in the United States. High Bridge, a Virginia Historic Landmark, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The bridge itself was completed in 1852 and the full line was completed in 1854. The High Bridge's twenty piers contained almost four million bricks. It supported a wooden superstructure with a pedestrian walkway beside the rail line, along with an adjacent wagon bridge which would ultimately play a pivotal role in the outcome of the Civil War.
The High Bridge played a key role during Confederate General Robert E. Lee's final retreat from Petersburg in the last days of the War. The Battle of High Bridge took place there on April 6–7, 1865. During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate forces attempted to destroy the bridge. The Confederates succeeded in setting the bridge on fire on April 6, 1865, to prevent its crossing by the Union.
After the Battle of High Bridge and his surrender at Appomattox, Robert E. Lee told the men who had destroyed the bridge to go home and start its rebuilding. Engineers began building temporary spans to replace those that had been destroyed. The South Side Rail Road company eventually finished the work and rail traffic resumed in September 1865.
Rebuilt after the Civil War to its former dimensions, the 21-span structure was 2,400 feet long at a maximum height of 160 feet above the Appomattox River Valley. It is currently unusable for traffic. By 2005 its then-owner, Norfolk Southern, had abandoned the corridor, subsequently giving 33 miles of the line to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. High Bridge opened to the public on April 6, 2012, the 147th anniversary of the Battle of High Bridge.
This was filmed in 4K with a DJI Mavic Pro.

Caverns at Natural Bridge State park in Virginia. This is well worth the time to get the package tickets and is only a short drive down Rt 11 from The Natural Bridge itself. The tour is about an hour long and a long sleeve shirt or light jacket is recommended since you are going underground. The average Temperature inside the cavern is approximately 54 degrees but feels so nice on a hot summer day.

Swinging Bridge at Tishomingo State Park | JCUN S1E005 2017 05 27
On our first camping trip in Lizzy at Tishomingo State Park, we took a short hike across the swinging bridge and up the Outcroppings Trail. The woods are lush and beautiful in late spring, and the exposed rock outcroppings are a unique feature of this part of North Mississippi. Andy handled the climb pretty well for someone who had a broken leg last fall. Enjoy!
