Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum in Bratislava, Slovakia
Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum in Bratislava, Slovakia
Visit this exceptional museum of modern art located on the Danube river for interesting exhibitions and a permanent collection featuring the most renowned artists from Slovakia and abroad. Admire the beautiful paintings and sculptures, walk through the expansive park and get a stunning view from the roof terrace – all this is possible in Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum.
Danubiana is located in Čunovo – Bratislava’s neighborhood – less than 15 kilometres south of the city center, on the edge of a peninsula where the mighty Danube flows. The easiest and most convenient way to get here is by car. You can also use the public transportation – in that case take the bus number 90 from the Slovak National Theater – the new building near Eurovea – it will take you around 40 minutes. There is also an option to take a boat or use a bike.
If you arrive by car, there are many parking lots to use in front of the museum.
Along with the beautiful exhibitions, as a bonus, you can enjoy the interesting park covering an area of 8000 m2, where 60 sculptures are presented.
The riverside location is really very impressive. We recommend to take this walk after you have finished admiring the artworks inside.
WHAT TO SEE IN THE DANUBIANA MEULENSTEEN ART MUSEUM?
Firstly, let us highlight that Danubiana is one of the youngest museums of modern art in Europe. The framework of its impressive architecture is formed by its unusual location on the borders of three neighboring countries: Slovakia, Austria and Hungary, but above all by the superb contrast of the wide expanse of water, open air and the endless banks of a dam.
On the ground floor you will find a gallery of contemporary art. Here are those exhibits that are on sale, a place for smaller scale exhibitions, an audio-visual centre and a lecture hall, too. Shows by leading international artists are alternated in the great hall on the first floor.
What we like about this place is the spatial layout of the interior – all the artworks are displayed in a generous hall-like space without any obstructions or subdivisions into smaller isolated rooms.
Another positive thing that you will notice as you walk along is that there is a lot of natural light. This is brought into the museum’s central space thanks to the glazed curtain-wall. Further light is led into the spaces through roof lights and a horizontal band of high-level windows.
The permanent exposition is comprised of an international collection, a collection of Dutch art and a collection of Slovak art.
The artworks featured in this exposition come from two sources. Most of the pieces are from the collection of Gerard Meulensteen – the founder of the Danubiana – who provided them to the museum on loan; the smaller part is from the Danubiana collection.
Even if you do not have deep knowledge about modern art, you will enjoy it here – simply said, everything is just alluring and relaxing. You’ll feel like walking through a huge, beautifully decorated flat.
Danubiana is also a very popular spot for families with children.
The complex is completed by an art shop with a wide selection of catalogues, art publications, postcards, souvenirs, and the cosy Art Café, which extends beyond the gallery and allows visitors to sit right on the bank of the Danube.
Once you have seen all the artworks, walk up to the rooftop terrace which offers a unique view of the expansive Danube river and the surrounding landscape.
This is definitely a good place to visit on a sunny day.
Over the short period of its existence, this museum has become one of Bratislava’s architecture landmarks and a must-see place to all art-lovers. Make sure you have at least 3 hours when coming here, so you can have a full cultural experience discovering the modern Slovak art and the beautiful surroundings. If you want to dedicate more time to culture, it is also a great half or one day trip, when you for instance take the boat to get here. Enjoy!

On our first day in Bratislava, Slovakia, we went on a free walking tour to see the Old Town. We loved the cake-like Blue Church and the controversial UFO Bridge, and enjoyed walking around the cozy streets of Slovakia's capital city.

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. With a population of about 430,000, it is one of the smaller capitals of Europe but still the country's largest city. The greater metropolitan area is home to more than 650,000 people. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two sovereign states.
The city's history has been influenced by people of many nations and religions, including Austrians, Bulgarians, Croats, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Serbs and Slovaks. It was the coronation site and legislative center of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1536 to 1783, and has been home to many Slovak, Hungarian and German historical figures.
Bratislava is the political, cultural and economic centre of Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament and the Slovak Executive. It has several universities, and many museums, theatres, galleries and other cultural and educational institutions.[9] Many of Slovakia's large businesses and financial institutions have headquarters there.
In 2017, Bratislava was ranked as the third richest region of the European Union by GDP (PPP) per capita (after Hamburg and Luxembourg City). GDP at purchasing power parity is about three times higher than in other Slovak regions. Bratislava receives around 1 million tourists every year.

10 Things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
We're visiting Bratislava, Slovakia and in this video we're going to show you guys 10 things to do in Bratislava. Let's get started.
Our first stop was Devin Castle, which is located in Devin, a borough of Bratislava. This is the one attraction we visited that was a little further from the Old Town - a 30-minute bus ride.
Devin Castle is a ruined castle that sits on Slovak territory at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers.
We ate at a restaurant called “Modra Hviezda” which is located at the base of Bratislava Castle and feels like a cave.
Bratislava Castle was Built in the 9th century and modified over the centuries many times over, this 4-towered castle sits perched on a hill overlooking the Danube River.
You get nice views over the Old Town, plus you have the Slovak National Museum & the Baroque Gardens on the north side of the palace.
The following day, we set out to explore the Old Town and stopping cafe for a decadent breakfast.
Bratislava’s Old Town is compact & easy to explore on foot and cover most of the sights in one day. We went on our own do-it-yourself tour finding all sorts of interesting statues & landmarks.
The Blue Church is located on Bezručova Street, which is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Old Town designed in the art nouveau style.
Locals in Bratislava like to say that the best view of their city is from the UFO Bridge because you can’t see the UFO bridge. You get amazing views of Bratislava during sunset.
And while you’re down by the Danube, you can either enjoy a stroll along the river, or go on a sightseeing cruise.
Prašná bašta is another cozy restaurant located at basement level and we had another wonderful meal.
For sports fans be sure to check out a HC Slovan Bratislava ice hockey game. They play in the KHL and the level of hockey and entertainment value is fantastic.
And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bratislava. While we can see the appeal of doing this as a day trip from Vienna, we loved having the extra time to really enjoy the city, try out some great restaurants, and make it to some of the further attractions like Devin Castle. If you have a few days to spare, this is a great little capital to visit.
Any other things to do in Bratislava that we may have missed, feel free to share your suggestions with travellers in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Slovakia video series showcasing Slovak food (Slovakian food), Slovak culture (Slovakian culture) and Slovak cuisine (Slovakian cuisine).

The Story of the Jewish Community in Bratislava
This video is part of the online exhibition, The Story of the Jewish Community in Bratislava
On the eve of the Holocaust the Jewish community in Bratislava was the largest Jewish community in Slovakia; it was a Jewish religious and political center, and home to the renowned Pressburg Yeshiva as well as the Histadrut of Slovakia. In 1930 over 15,000 Jews lived in the city, constituting some 12 percent of the population.
In March 1939, with the creation of an independent Slovak State, the Jews of Bratislava were subjected to discriminatory practices and persecution. By the 1st of March 1942, nearly half of the city's Jews had been evicted, and dispersed in smaller towns across the country. During 1942 many of the Jews of Bratislava were deported to the death camps in Poland.
During the war the city was home to the Bratislava Working Group, which was devoted to rescuing Jews. The group's efforts, however, came to naught and most Slovakian Jews were murdered in the Holocaust.
This is the story of the Jewish community of Bratislava.
Bratislava, Slovakia, Europe
Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and, with a population of about 460,000, the country's largest city. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the Danube River and the left bank of the Morava River. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two independent countries. Bratislava is the political, cultural, and economic centre of Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament, and the Slovak Executive. It is home to several universities, museums, theatres, galleries and other important cultural and educational institutions. Many of Slovakia's large businesses and financial institutions also have headquarters there. The history of the city has been strongly influenced by people of different nations and religions, namely by Austrians, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Slovaks, and Jews. The city was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, a part of the larger Habsburg Monarchy territories, from 1536 to 1783 and has been home to many Slovak, Hungarian, and German historical figures. Bratislava is situated in south-western Slovakia, within the Bratislava Region. Its location on the borders with Austria and Hungary makes it the only national capital that borders two countries. It is only 62 kilometres (38.5 mi) from the border with the Czech Republic and only 60 kilometres (37.3 mi) from the Austrian capital Vienna. The city has a total area of 367.58 square kilometres (141.9 sq mi), making it the second-largest city in Slovakia by area (after the township of Vysoké Tatry). Bratislava straddles the Danube River, which it had developed around and for centuries was the chief transportation route to other areas. The river passes through the city from the west to the south-east. The Middle Danube basin begins at Devín Gate in western Bratislava. Other rivers are the Morava River, which forms the north-western border of the city and enters the Danube at Devín, the Little Danube, and the Vydrica, which enters the Danube in the borough of Karlova Ves. The Carpathian mountain range begins in city territory with the Little Carpathians (Malé Karpaty). The Záhorie and Danubian lowlands stretch into Bratislava. The city's lowest point is at the Danube's surface at 126 metres (413 ft) above mean sea level, and the highest point is Devínska Kobyla at 514 metres (1,686 ft). The average altitude is 140 metres (460 ft). The cityscape of Bratislava is characterised by medieval towers and grandiose 20th-century buildings, but it has undergone profound changes in a construction boom at the start of the 21st century. Most historical buildings are concentrated in the Old Town. Bratislava's Town Hall is a complex of three buildings erected in the 14th--15th centuries and now hosts the Bratislava City Museum. Michael's Gate is the only gate that has been preserved from the medieval fortifications, and it ranks among the oldest of the town's buildings; the narrowest house in Europe is nearby. The University Library building, erected in 1756, was used by the Diet of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1802 to 1848. Much of the significant legislation of the Hungarian Reform Era (such as the abolition of serfdom and the foundation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences) was enacted there.
The historic centre is characterised by many baroque palaces. The Grassalkovich Palace, built around 1760, is now the residence of the Slovak president, and the Slovak government now has its seat in the former Archiepiscopal Palace. In 1805, diplomats of emperors Napoleon and Francis II signed the fourth Peace of Pressburg in the Primate's Palace, after Napoleon's victory in the Battle of Austerlitz. Some smaller houses are historically significant; composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel was born in an 18th-century house in the Old Town. Notable cathedrals and churches include the Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral built in the 13th--16th centuries, which served as the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary between 1563 and 1830. The Franciscan Church, dating to the 13th century, has been a place of knighting ceremonies and is the oldest preserved sacral building in the city. The Church of St. Elizabeth, better known as the Blue Church due to its colour, is built entirely in the Hungarian Secessionist style. A curiosity is the underground (formerly ground-level) restored portion of the Jewish cemetery where 19th-century Rabbi Moses Sofer is buried, located at the base of the castle hill near the entrance to a tram tunnel.
Slovakia Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Slovakia.
Slovakia has a long and varied history and contains Europe’s youngest capital city and also its highest mountain range, as well as cultural masterpieces and unspoiled nature. Bratislava is located in the heart of Europe and is the capital of Slovakia. Surrounded by the City Hall and several palaces, it is like being taken back in time into a rich and glorious past. On the Danube’s Slovakian side, and to the east, is the town of Komárno. In the old urban market square a Miniature Europe with forty five buildings has, in recent years, come into existence. Towers, domes, arcades, half-timbered buildings and woodcarvings frame the square at whose centre is the Millennium Fountain. It is a unique mixture of architecture that signifies the common culture of European countries. Seven hundred metres above sea level, herds of sheep graze peacefully on the slopes of the Great Fatra, the location of the almost hidden and forgotten Vlkolĺnec, a unique village in the heart of Slovakia’s Liptov region. Today it is tantamount to being an open-air museum. Further north is Terchová, birthplace of Slovakia’s national hero, Juraj Jánošík. The legendary robber chief has an exhibition dedicated to him in which the living conditions and customs of that time are on display. The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe. A magnificent mountain landscape with rocky mountains and many lakes. In 1947, the National Park of the same name was founded. Slovakia is a land of fortresses, castles and cities that date from the Middle Ages and, despite its many mountain regions, a southern-influenced way of life.
