Welcome to Sanibel Island, Florida!
INFO: - As you leave Fort Myers and begin to cross the Sanibel Causeway, gulls, pelicans and terns herald your arrival - flying alongside your car, and you may possibly be greeted by jumping dolphins below in the water.
Here, mother nature has created a masterpiece of soft white sugary sand, soothing gulf breezes and abundant natural beauty. From the renowned and historic Sanibel Lighthouse, which beckons you to the shell strewn Gulf of Mexico beaches, to the meandering canals, Sanibel possibly has the best weather in the world.
But it's the beaches... garnished with tossing palm trees and whispering pines, it's miles and miles of beaches appeal to even the most finicky of beach enthusiasts.
Sniabel Island offers the best shelling in North America simply because of geography and the shape of the island. The term Sanibel Stoop and Captiva Crouch refers to the many visitors bending over and collecting their bounty of seashells. In fact, The non profit Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum features more than 30 exibits of mollusks from around the world, and are devoted to shells in art and history, shell habitat, rare specimens, fossil shells, and more. There is a hands on play area for children as well as videos and games.
Miles of white beaches are located throughout Sanibel and nearby Captiva island. Most beaches have nearby parking, restrooms, showers, grills, picnic tables and of course, miles and miles of sand. Some beaches have gentle waves perfect for little children - others have a bigger surf to slash and swim in the sun kissed Gulf.
Enjoy miles of scenic bike paths and walking paths that meander along the gulf and wind through wildlife habitat and quiet neighborhoods.
Sanibel is a barrier island sanctuary where over 67 percent of the lands on the island are protected. The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is second only to beaches as the island's top attraction, and is one of the top 5 most visited refuges in the US. Tram tours are the best and most eco friendly option with little impact on the environment, plus your experienced guides will help you spot wildlife that most visitors would never see on their own or would be able to identify. These guides take visitors past tidal mud flats and mangrove forests where spoonbills, herons, flamingos, egrets, pelicans, ibis, anhingas, bald eagles and many more birds may be observed.
Whether you're a fisherman angling for your early morning catch, a kamakaze pelican looking for his next meal or just want a nice quiet seafood dinner, there are many local restaurants and cafes for your dining pleasure. The island is pleasantly devoid of chain stores and restaurant, as well as big box stores, but is dotted with locally owned, colorful shops, galleries and restaurants.
The recently renovated Island Cinema and the Schoolhouse Theatre provide plenty of entertainment. The new city recreation center offers swimming and other activities.
The best way to experience this paradise is to stay right here on the islands. For information on a beautiful gulf side 3 bedroom condominium for rent, visit Shorewood2C.com. With room to sleep 6, the quite complex offers a swimming pool and direct access to this sandy beach.
provides high definition real estate video tours, client testimonials and community tours for Massachusetts & New Hampshire along with wide angle, high quality real estate photography.

Detroit Zoo Full Tour - Royal Oak, Michigan
The Detroit Zoo is a zoo located in Royal Oak and Huntington Woods, Michigan, about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of the Detroit city limits, at the intersection of Woodward Avenue, 10 Mile Road, and Interstate 696. It is operated by the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS), a non-profit organization, along with the Belle Isle Nature Center, located within the city limits of Detroit on Belle Isle. The Detroit Zoo is one of Michigan's largest family attractions, hosting more than 1.5 million visitors annually. Situated on 125 acres of naturalistic exhibits, it is home to more than 2,400 animals representing 235 species. The Detroit Zoo was the first zoo in the United States to use barless exhibits extensively.
Habitats:
National Amphibian Conservation Center
The National Amphibian Conservation Center is a $7 million, 12,000-square-foot facility situated on a two-acre Michigan wetland area and pond called Amphibiville. The center, which opened in June 2000, has a diverse range of frogs, toads, salamanders, newts and caecilians. The Wall Street Journal dubbed the attraction Disneyland for toads. The National Amphibian Conservation Center participates in research and conservation efforts for species including the Panamanian golden frog, Puerto Rican crested toad, and Wyoming toad.
The Arctic Ring of Life
The 4-acre Arctic Ring of Life, which opened in October 2001, is home to two polar bears, gray seals, a harbor seal and arctic foxes. It is among the largest polar bear habitats in North American zoos.
Cotton Family Wetlands and Boardwalk
Mimicking a Michigan ecosystem, the 1.7-acre pond and wetlands area and accompanying 7,200-square-foot boardwalk is home to native fish, frogs, turtles and birds as well as the zoo's trumpeter swans. The boardwalk itself is made from a 95-percent recycled wood-alternative decking material called Trex, composed primarily of plastic grocery bags and reclaimed hardwood. The Wetlands and Boardwalk are bounded by Amphibiville, the Warchol Beaver Habitat, the Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat, and the Holden Reptile Conservation Center.
Thanks to a $102,350 grant from NOAA, the Wetlands are also able to be used as professional development and outdoor classroom for teachers and students underrepresented in science fields.
Cotton Family Wolf Wilderness
The Cotton Family Wolf Wilderness is a $1.4 million two-acre sanctuary that features native meadows and trees, a flowing stream and pond, dens, and elevated rock outcroppings from which two gray wolves survey their surroundings. The habitat also incorporates a renovated historic log cabin which had existed on the property.
Giraffe Encounter
At the Giraffe Encounter, guests are able to feed the giraffes from an 18-foot-tall platform that extends into their habitat. This experience, which started in July 2007, runs Tuesday through Sunday from spring through fall.
The Great Apes of Harambee
The Great Apes of Harambee is a 4-acre indoor/outdoor habitat home to chimpanzees and western lowland gorillas. The animals may be rotated into each other's habitat spaces, as this simulates nomadic movement similar to wild behavior.
Holden Reptile Conservation Center
Opened as the Holden Museum of Living Reptiles in 1960, the Holden Reptile Conservation Center is home to 150 reptiles representing 70 species, 45 percent of which are considered threatened or endangered in the wild.
Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat
The Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat provides a habitat for five river otters and features a 5,900-gallon pool complete with waterfall and waterslide. The pool is enclosed on one side by a glass wall, on the other side of which is an observation building. The habitat is designed so that visitors – including small children – can enjoy an eye-level view of the otters as they swim.
The North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) can weigh 20-30 pounds, and its slender, cylindrical body can reach 2–3 feet in length. The aquatic mammal sports short, dense, waterproof fur and profuse whiskers. The playful river otter is swift on land as well as in the water, though its loping trot can look somewhat ungainly compared to its graceful slide through the water.
Polk Penguin Conservation Center
The Polk Penguin Conservation Center (PPCC), opened in April 2016. The Polk Penguin Conservation Center is the largest center for penguins in the world and was awarded the 2017 Exhibit Award by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, given annually to accredited zoos and aquariums for excellence in exhibit design.
The Wildlife Interpretive Gallery
The Wildlife Interpretive Gallery is home to the Butterfly Garden, Matilda Wilson Free-Flight Aviary, Science On a Sphere, as well as DZS's permanent fine art collection. Shelle Isle, an exhibit dedicated to the partula snail- a once-extinct animal the DZS is credited with saving.

Lion Country Safari Full Tour - Loxahatchee, Florida
Lion Country Safari is a drive-through safari park and walk-through amusement park located on over 600 acres in Loxahatchee (near West Palm Beach), in Palm Beach County, Florida. Founded in 1967, it claims to be the first 'cageless zoo' in the United States.
Exhibits:
The original park in Florida consists of over 1,000 animals, throughout seven sections in the 4-mile preserve as well as the 33-acre Amusement Park.
Visitors who purchase a ticket enter the park in their own vehicle (no convertibles), driving slowly at their own pace, and view the animals while listening to a recorded narration on audiotape or CD. Many of the animals, such as giraffes, southern white rhinoceroses, and zebras, are allowed to roam freely throughout the preserve, even crossing the road in front of vehicles. Others, such as lions or chimpanzees, are segregated behind fences or water barriers.
Visitors are warned to drive slowly and carefully, to avoid stopping too close to animals, and not to open their car doors or windows. The lions, whose ability to roam freely with cars was one of the park's original attractions, were separated from visitors by a fence around the road in 2005, due to visitors ignoring warnings and opening their car doors.
A unique aspect of Lion Country Safari is the chimpanzee exhibit. The chimps live on an island system where they move to a different island every day, replicating their natural nomadic lifestyle. The chimps live in complex social groups, as they would in the wild. Because of this, Lion Country Safari has been useful to those interested in behavioral studies of chimps. As of 2012, chimpanzees living at Lion Country Safari included Little Mama, one of the oldest known living chimpanzees, born in 1938, who died on November 14th 2017 from kidney failure. Lion Country Safari also serves as a retirement facility for chimpanzees who were once used in research laboratories and entertainment.
After visitors have driven through the park, they can visit Safari World, a theme park featuring exhibits, and amusement park fare such as an Animal Theater, a petting zoo, mini golf, paddle boats, 2 water slides, a small water park, and the popular giraffe-feeding exhibit. Food is available at Lion Country Safari's main restaurant.

GTM Research Reserve protects 73,352 acres south of the City of Jacksonville (Duval County) in St. Johns County and Flagler County on the northeast coast of Florida, one of the fastest growing regions in the state. The populations of St. Johns County and the adjacent Flagler, Putnam and Volusia counties have grown 20 percent since 1990 and are projected to grow an additional 20 percent by 2010. More than 1.3 million people live within 50 miles of GTM Research Reserve, including the cities of Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Palatka, Daytona and New Smyrna.
These protected areas provide habitat for a wide variety of fish and wildlife. A species list recently compiled for Guana River Marsh Aquatic Preserve indicated the presence of at least 44 mammal, 358 bird, 41 reptile, 21 amphibian, 303 fish and 580 plant species. It contains habitats essential to 48 protected animals and 8 protected plants.
GTM Research Reserve is also important for the economy because these include 16 species that are fished or harvested commercially and 18 species that are fished recreationally.
GTM Research Reserve is geographically separated into a northern and southern component, separated by the City of St. Augustine. The northern component (referred to locally as Guana) is associated with the Tolomato and Guana River estuaries and the southern component is associated with the Matanzas River.
